  1. Is that anything like "taking the piss?"
  2. You've always been such an optimist. How can they give up on this season while in first place, just before a 4-game series against the second place team?
  3. I think you guys are talking more about getting the Parker Brothers than about Milton Bradley.
  4. I think it's because the Yankees' runs came in the top of the inning, and the Orioles didn't get their "last licks." I would have thought that the four runs the Yankees scored in the top of the 8th would have been erased, and the Orioles would have ended up winning based on the score at the bottom of the 7th. But I know there was a recent rules change, and that may be the old way of doing things.

  6. Well, in that case, make it a one-game, winner-take-all. America isn't going to be interested in watching nine World Series games, especially if one team wins the first few games and the series gets lopsided.
  7. We could get by without Ledee for a week. Can't Easley and Valentin play some outfield? Even Lo Duca can, in a pinch. (Except for the two games when he'll be suspended, natch.) They can also get by without Smith for a week too, though I'm less thrilled with that idea. I think before optioning Smith I'd try to get Sele through waivers.
  8. I only started paying attention at the tail end of it, but during last night's SNY telecast, Keith and Ron were telling some story about Klapisch and it sounded like they were making fun of him. Something about him thinking he was a good enough pitcher to strike out some of the 1986 Mets? Was anyone listening more closely than I was?
  9. They don't seem to be making the connection that as they've been increasing the number of postseason games, the number of postseason viewers has been decreasing. The longer a series, the less important each individual game is. Also, a best of five is more likely to go the distance than a best of 7, which is more likely to go the distance than a best of 9. By expanding the length of the World Series, you'll become less likely to see a final, desperate, winner-take-all game. I don't think they SHOULD do this, but I bet that if they reduced the Division Series to a best-of-one, the LCS to a best-of-three, and the World Series to a best-of-five, there would be less baseball fatigue in October and larger audience numbers for each game. Best of 9 is a step in the wrong direction. And I'm not saying this from a "purist" standpoint. I think it's just simple supply and demand. There's just about no demand for MORE baseball in October.
  10. True. He should change it to "Laverne."
  11. Yeah, streaks aren't anything that excites me a whole lot either. But there is something jarring about seeing (0-10) after somebody's name in a box score.
  12. For those of you with primitive jinx aversions, this is NOT the beginning of a countdown, just a notation: As of this morning, the Yankees tragic number is 76 for the division title, and 79 for the wild card. Meanwhile, the Mets have a magic number of 83 for the division title, and 86 for the wild card. (The wild card leader, Arizona, has a better record than the Phillies do.) Still a long way to go.

  15. Trachsel was credited with a complete game in last year's rain-shortened game against the Phillies. I wonder if this is going to be the only shutout, or even the only complete game, for the Mets this season.

  17. And I never said otherwise. That's how I see it too.
  18. Huh? I'm not calling Schoeneweis's suckiness a mitigating factor! I'm saying it's the REASON it's a bad deal. If he had signed him to a short-term, cheap deal, it wouldn't be so bad because he'd be disposable. Nobody's gnashing their teeth over Chan Ho Park, are they? No mitigation at all. I think you're looking for hidden context that just isn't there.
  19. I'd say the specific situation in which to use him is when the Mets are either ahead or behind by eight runs or more.
  20. You might get more objectivity if you phrased the question differently. You're really looking for a system that will objectively grade a trade, whether it was made by Omar Minaya, Steve Phillips, Frank Cashen, or anybody else. It gets trickier when you have to apply the years and dollars that are on a contract. Schoeneweis is looking like a disaster, but mainly because of the 3 years. If he was signed to a one-year, $500,000 contract, he'd be gone and forgotten by now. It's not the decision to acquire Schoeneweis that's looking so foolish, it's the size of the commitment to him.
  21. Edgy DC wrote: He goes again tonight against Craig Brazell (21 homers!), Justin Huber and the Omaha Royals. AND their ugly caps! (I wonder, are their helmets equally ugly?) I'd replace Schoeneweis with Williams in a New York Heartbeat. That three-year contract can get in the way, though. We can be pretty sure that the earliest they'd release Schoeneweis would be around the middle of the 2009 season. But I'd certainly expose him to waivers to get him to New Orleans. Or Kingsport.
