  1. That's the year my grandmother (still living) was born. She may or may not share a birth date with Dizzy Dean, who is dead at the present time. (I've seen two reported birth dates for Ol' Diz, one of which, January 16, 1911 is the day my grandmother was born.)
  2. Wow, it took three people to jump on that comment!
  3. There was a stretch that ended with Lincoln where most presidents were one-termers. Lincoln, in running for a second term, was actually breaking with recent tradition. Buchanan, instead, may be the last president to retire after one term.
  4. He's a native New Yorker who's been living in St. Louis for many years. I think he lived in Commack. I know his mother did, anyway.
  5. Only eight votes so far for the Mets nice win against the Braves on Wednesday night. If your name is TransMonk, Yancy Street Gang, Valadius, metirish, Johnny Dickshot, bmfc1, sharpie, or Frayed Knot, then you've already voted. If your name is G-Fafif, then you need to move your vote from the locked duplicate thread to the real thread. And if you haven't voted, and intend to do so, please vote today. The game will close some time over the coming weekend. http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7351

  7. I'm a loser too. (Counting last year, I'm now 0 for 4.) I invited a pretty girl to join us in the loser's lounge, however: She brought refreshments.
  8. Good explanation, Mole. Thank you. I often think that I have the musical version of color blindness, whatever that may be. I may have posted something here about it before, but I was amazed once, when watching Letterman, when Paul Shaffer asked Elton John if he knows how to read music. Elton said no, and Paul said he couldn't either. They just know the sound of a song and know how to play it. I know that if I were ever to try to tap out a song on the piano I'd have to methodically follow the notes on the page, like a painter painting by the numbers. Stuff like this, like Darling's quote and Mole's explanation, remind me that music is a language that I just don't understand.
  9. I really know so little about music. This, for example: ]I kind of understand the beat; it sounds right to me. I always figured it's not Coltrane's fault that I don't get it right away, it's just my lack of sophistication. It all depends on where you are. Something that doesn't make sense today might make perfect sense 10 years from now. I really don't know what that means. How do you understand a beat? How can music make sense or not make sense? I guess this is why I listen to NPR on the radio instead of music. And, is jazz really more sophisticated than other music? Or is this writer just a jazz snob?
  10. The low number of losses simply means that it's been very difficult to limit the Mets to 5 or fewer hits. With the lineup they have, that's not at all surprising.
  11. Exactly. That's why I'm not wholesale agreeing with Orel. I don't recall if Maine's expression was any different in NLCS Game 6 than it was yesterday. Some people's eyes mirror the soul more accurately than others. Maine may be one of those others. Hershiser was really hammering the point, so he clearly puts a lot into this. He's a smart guy, and I thought it was an interesting perspective.
  12. If your name is G-Fafif, Yancy Street Gang, bmfc1, or Johnny Dickshot, then you've already voted for Tuesday night's 13-5 loss to the Braves. If not, please vote today because voting will close on Friday morning. http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7342

  15. Oh, and I should point out that Hershiser never said "eye of the tiger." I have to take responsibility for introducing that term into the conversation, and if it makes Hershiser's observations seem stupid, that's my own fault. Shortly after I started that post my daughter started demanding my attention, so I used "eye of the tiger" to quickly (and poorly) wrap up my point.
  16. I haven't been doing it as much lately, but years ago, when a pitcher was in a jam I'd look at his eyes to get a sense of how things would turn out. It wasn't infallible, of course, but in 1985, you'd see fire in Doc Gooden's eyes when he had runners on base. A few years earlier, when Mike Scott was pitching for the Mets, you'd see fear. It sounds like Orel Hershiser was seeing indifference in Maine's eyes. (And this wasn't a retrofitting thing, it was while Maine was on the mound.) Hershiser did a lot of reading of body language during that telecast. He compared Maine's dazed indifference to Jose Reyes' determination at the plate. He said that even though Reyes has been slumping, there was no change to his attitude. He also pointed out how Willie Randolph gave Maine a cold shoulder when he returned to the dugout after failing to bunt a runner over. Maine walked right past Willie and Willie never even gave him a glance. I thought it was pretty interesting.
  17. 14 syllables is nothing, compared to what Borat's movie had.
  18. metsguyinmichigan wrote: Phillips confusing today with Yom Kippur... I do that all the time myself.
  19. ="Zvon"]Ha...and Hersh did? When I saw him peering in I saw the eyes of a boyscout. Hershiser very much did. There was a lot of confidence in his eyes. I think Hershiser may have a point.
  20. Anybody hear what Orel Hershiser was saying on ESPN about John Maine? Interesting stuff. Maine, basically, doesn't have the "eye of the tiger."
  21. Atheist or not, I still have a Catholic background. Maybe instead I should have said that it should ascend to the moon, or maybe to Neptune.
  22. She'll be 56 in a few weeks... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000261/
  23. I don't think Shea should be demolished. It should just ascend into heaven.
  24. I guess that's possible. You'd expect more maturity from someone his age, but one thing I've learned is that age doesn't always bring maturity.
