  1. Definitely. Wright rebounded from his awful April. Reyes will rebound from this. When did this slump start? Does it coincide in any way with the Rick Down/Howard Johnson/Rickey Henderson shakeup?
  2. You know, one sweet (but nerve-wracking) ending to the regular season would be playing and winning that one-game playoff at Citizens Bank Park.
  3. Willets Point wrote: I'm more bothered by the attacks on individual players (especially when people say it reflects on their character as humans). I think the last five games have been team losses, wouldn't you agree? Most of them have been team losses. Last night's, though, falls squarely on Maine's shoulders. The Mets scored 8 runs, and overall played fairly well. Even the bullpen did well, one run over four-plus innings.
  4. Oh, I assure you this won't be forgotten! We'll either be gnashing our teeth about this collapse all winter, or we'll look back and laugh once the Mets secure a postseason berth. The middle ground here, of course, is that the Mets stumble into the playoffs and get quickly eliminated. That would reduce both the gnashing and the laughter.
  5. You're really committed to this sunny disposition shtick, aren't you?
  6. What if the Phillies are at 60% and the Mets at 20%? Lately, though, it seems like the numbers should be 100 and 0.
  7. A starting pitcher going seven innings? Tell me you're not taking the piss!!
  8. He may even make himself a post-season starter. If you run into Mike Pelfrey, tell him I'd really love to give him 6 Schaefer points tonight.

  10. I'm beyond caring how cool their clincher is. If they want to do it at 3 a.m. in Baghdad, that's fine with me.
  11. I know what you mean. I've had that "today's the day" feeling for four days now.
  12. The Phillies fans I work with have been remarkably sympathetic. They also seem to think that the Phillies will still find a way to blow this thing.
  13. If I remember right, he did that with another pitcher (Perez maybe) about a week ago.
  14. Yes, but I think some of these guys are sow's ears. On the whole, Peterson and his approach have been successful and I don't want to jettison him just because he couldn't salvage Scott Schoeneweis. He should be asked some hard questions, though, such as, "What happened to John Maine in the last two months?"
  15. In the Daily News this morning, Willie calmly explained how fiery he is.
  16. Willie will be back in 2008. I don't doubt that for a second. The greater danger for him is his legacy. If this collapse plays out like we fear it will, then he's Gene Mauch, and will continue to be Gene Mauch until and unless he wins a World Series. Gene Mauch had a long and respectable career, but his name will forever be associated with 1964.

  22. A bottler? We'll have to add that term to the metirish glossary. Hershiser's point was more about poise than about noise. It was about confidence and determination, not brashness.
  23. But, to play devil's advocate, maybe Maine DID have the look in his eyes last year in Game 6. He may have been pitching with more confidence last October than he is now. He really has little reason to have much confidence right now. He's fighting through a very extended period of awful, with only a few scattered exceptions.
  24. The brutal fact is that Willie doesn't have a lot of good options when he has to hand the ball to somebody in the fifth or sixth innings. I still have a reasonable amount of faith in Feliciano, Heilman, and Wagner. (Is Wagner still with the club?) But Sosa, Mota, Schoeneweis, and Sele are all undependable. Smith, Collazo, and Humber haven't done much, at least recently. What Willie really needs is some seven- or eight-inning starts. More than anything else, I think middle relief has been killing this team lately.
  25. Where is Polk buried? (He was from Tennessee, wasn't he?) Maybe we need to have some kind of graveside exorcism to get him to yield the magic number.
