  3. APRMAYJUNJULAUGSEP For the third consecutive year, the Schaefer Mets Player of the Year is DAVID WRIGHT but unlike in 2006, few are likely to be surprised by David's victory. Wright led the Mets with 196 hits, 42 doubles, a .325 batting average, a .546 slugging percentage, and an on base percentage of .416. His 30 home runs and 107 runs batted in were both a close second to Carlos Beltran, and his 113 runs and 34 stolen bases were second to Jose Reyes. http://leaptoad.com/mets/jpeg/DavidWright1971.jpg The Pitcher of the Year, (please hold your boos) is TOM GLAVINE. For much of the season, the award was securely in John Maine's grasp, but Maine's post-All Star break tailspin allowed Glavine to surpass his point total. (Maine's no-hit bit in the Mets' last victory of the season was almost enough for him to regain the lead, but even had he rated a perfect 6, he still would have fallen short. Glavine led the Mets in the unspectacular category of innings pitched. He was third in wins with 13 (behind Maine and Oliver Perez, who each won 15) and his winning percentage of .619 was second only to Orlando Hernandez (.643) among starting pitchers who spend the full season in the Mets rotation. This is Glavine's second Pitcher of the Year award; he also won in 2006. http://leaptoad.com/mets/jpeg/TomGlavine1973.jpg Season-to-date totals for 2007 Through game of September 30, 2007 RankNamePoints1David Wright124.772Carlos Beltran109.253José Reyes100.464Carlos Delgado81.595Tom Glavine75.976John Maine74.867Oliver Perez66.918Orlando Hernandez64.069Paul Lo Duca59.4310Shawn Green56.5511Moises Alou55.6612Jorge Sosa44.9013Aaron Heilman34.8614Billy Wagner34.1115Lastings Milledge30.4916Damion Easley30.0217Pedro Feliciano27.0618Ramon Castro26.7419Ruben Gotay25.4220Luis Castillo23.8021Endy Chavez23.1422Scott Schoeneweis22.8623Guillermo Mota19.7824Marlon Anderson19.6125Joe Smith18.9626Carlos Gomez15.2327José Valentin14.9328Pedro Martinez14.8629Mike Pelfrey13.1730Aaron Sele12.8131David Newhan9.5432Julio Franco7.3933Ricky Ledee4.9434Ambiorix Burgos4.5735Mike DiFelice4.5236Brian Lawrence4.1837Jeff Conine3.5138Chip Ambres1.5239Willie Collazo1.3640Philip Humber0.9241Sandy Alomar0.9142Jon Adkins0.8343Ben Johnson0.6244Carlos Muniz0.4245Lino Urdaneta0.3246Jason Vargas0.2547Anderson Hernandez0.08
  4. Although September of 2007 will almost certainly go down in history as one of the worst that the franchise has ever experienced, there were a few good performances to go along with the many that were bad. SCHAEFER METS PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE MONTH, SEPTEMBER 2007 http://leaptoad.com/mets/jpeg/CarlosBeltran1977.jpg http://leaptoad.com/mets/jpeg/PedroMartinez1972.jpg The Schaefer Mets Player of the Month for September 2007 is CARLOS BELTRAN. This is Carlos' first win this season and third overall. Beltran led the Mets in September with 8 home runs, 22 runs scored and 27 runs batted in. Runners up David Wright and Moises Alou also had strong months. Alou led the team with a .402 batting average and a .607 slugging percentage. Wright batted .352 and slugged .602. The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month for September 2007 is PEDRO MARTINEZ. This is the sixth time that Pedro has been Pitcher of the Month. He previously won in each of the first four months of 2005 and in April of 2006. No other Mets pitcher has won this award six times. Pedro went 3-1 in September (as did Oliver Perez and Mike Pelfrey) and easily led the team with a 2.57 ERA. His 32 strikeouts were second to John Maine's 36. 8. Yeah. They're keeping Willie (for now) because of the 4 point something million that they owe him for the next two years. Unless the Mets come roaring out of the gate next April, that won't be enough to save him. Also, didn't Davey Johnson also shave off his mustache late in his tenure as Mets manager in a futile attempt to save his job?
  9. Bad bad terrible horrible decision. (Am I making myself clear here?) In February and March, the Collapse will be a big stinking toxic cloud over the Mets training camp. It will make for a poisonous atmosphere and I don't think Willie Randolph will be able to dispel it. A new manager could just say, "I wasn't here. We have a clean slate." Willie could say, "I'm confident that we've put this behind us" but everyone will remember how confident he was when everything was falling apart the previous September. 2008 has just gotten off on the wrong foot. If, in May, the Mets find themselves around .500 and in third place (which is not at all far-fetched) Willie will probably be fired anyway.
  10. Sucks for Phillies fans getting a 10 p.m. start on a Sunday night. Oh well, too bad for them! I wonder if they'd move the game earlier in the day if one or more of the other series finish early? I think they've done that in the past.
  11. NLDS: Colorado in 5, Arizona in 5. ALDS: Cleveland in 5, Boston in 4. NLCS: Colorado in 6. ALCS: Cleveland in 5. World Series: Colorado in 6.
  12. How about this then? Two leagues, no divisions. At the end of the season, the fourth and fifth place team play a best of three series. The winner of that series goes on to play a best of five against the first place team. The second place and third place teams also play a best of five. The winners of the two series play a best of seven for the League Championship. You still have your five playoff teams, but now you're absolutely certain that only the teams with the best records make the playoffs. The teams that are forced to play the first round are at a real disadvantage because the winner has to play a team that's had three days of rest. The first place team's advantage over the second and third place teams, in addition to home field, is that they get to play a tired team while the number 2 and 3 teams are each playing a rested opponent.
  13. The only thing this change would do is make it harder to win that one Wild Card berth. Whoever does it is, as before, on a par with the three division winners. This way, however, it could even be a third place team as one of the final four.

  15. That sounds awfully good to me. Let's get Linebrink. Who else?

  17. Well, that deal does include a shortstop coming over from Minnesota.
  18. I just got an e-mail from my company announcing that we're all allowed to wear Phillies caps and shirts to work tomorrow. Ugh. I think I'll wear a Mets blindfold.
  19. Sounds like Omar's saying he's going to recommend that they keep Willie, but that the Wilpons might overrule him. If that's true, then I hope they do.
  20. In case silverdsl drops by. Oh, and for Steve Rogers.
  21. Diamondbacks. I don't want to see the Cubs fall short of the 100-year mark.
  22. I need the Phillies to be silenced. Go Rockies!
