  1. Oh, I know it wouldn't be binding. But I think a team would be a little more willing to pull the trigger if the player says, "Sure I'd be interested in playing in New York" instead of, "No, I'm going to test the market." The thing is, I don't think they're even allowed to do that much without a blessing from the Commissioner.
  2. If he was asking $25 million per over 6 or 7 years, I'd be all in favor of signing him. It's the eighth through eleventh year that would give me pause. Moreso than the difference between $25 million and $30 million.
  3. Yes, it does rarely happen. I wonder, though, if the Twins could say, "Hey, Johann, if we traded you to the Mets would you agree to negotiate with them?" Instead of the 72-hour window, would it be permissible for the acquiring team to get a good faith promise that the player would be willing to talk?
  4. You would think that a team dealing a player in his walk year would get a better return package if they allow for the negotiating window. Yet most often they refuse to allow it. I'm not sure I understand why that is. The only thing I can think of is fan reaction. "Hey! If the Mets were able to sign Santana before free agency, why didn't the Twins just do it?" I don't think that's a good reason, by the way. It's just the best one I could think of.
  5. For the record, Posada turned 36 in August. A three-year contract would take him just past his 39th birthday.
  6. Yes. I'm sorry if I'm a little jumpy. I'm currently writing an essay about how wonderful Mantle and DiMaggio were and I was up until 3 a.m.
  7. THAT'S NOT FUCKING FUNNY!
  8. He's 32 years old. An 11-year contract would take him to the age of 43. If anyone commits to a contract that will pay Rodriguez $25 million (or $30 million) when he's 43 is beyond insane. It's risky enough to go seven or eight years with him. Eleven is nuts. (Doesn't mean he won't get it, though.)
  9. Given the alternatives, signing him to a one- or two-year contract might not be such a bad idea. Whether the money is high or not is of little concern to me. I'd be more concerned if the number of years was too high.
  10. Well, to the Yankee mindset, not winning the World Series is a tragedy; the way most other teams would regard a last place finish.
  11. Iubitul wrote: Sign ARod, and move Wright or Reyes to second. (no, I'm not serious) Sign Rodriguez, put him at first base, and deal Delgado. Of course, that wouldn't solve second base at all.
  12. And Red Sox/Diamondbacks would rule it out.
  13. You know, I'd be okay with him as Willie's bench coach, but if he still wants to manage, what options might be available to him? St. Louis? Pittsburgh? Are there any other teams who will be manager shopping this winter? (Does Seattle have a manager for next year?)
  14. ...he'd say that he's not interested in returning to the Yankees. And you know what, it occurs to me that I posted this same sentiment a year or two ago, the last time the Yankees left him twisting in the wind. But I think it's even more true now. He's likely to get fired. He doesn't need the money. He should step aside before they fire him. The old, "You can't fire me! I quit!" maneuver. He must be addicted to the pinstripes or something.
  15. I can't give much weight to a theory that says his funk occurred because it was the 12-month anniversary of his signing a contract.
  16. I can understand the Chrysler Building error. In most cities "downtown" means the heart of the city. Only in New York does "downtown" have a different, more specific meaning. A non-New Yorker standing in Times Square, or at Rockefeller Center, or on Lexington or Madison Avenues, would certainly think that they were "downtown."
  17. Not necessarily. Depends on the player.
  18. I'm pretty sure this is the first time that LCS games will have a scheduled start time of 10 p.m. At least both teams play in the Mountain Time Zone, so it will be an 8 o'clock start local time. If there was an Eastern Time Zone team in that matchup the fans would have a legitimate gripe. Hopefully that wouldn't have happened.
  19. When this came out, Seth Rogen was a guest with Letterman. He told a story about his preparation for the love scene with Katherine Heigl. He decided to use a line that he had heard that Sean Connery used to use: "I apologize if I get aroused... And I apologize if I don't." From Connery it was a charming line. From Rogen, it wasn't. The response he got was, "Why would I want you to get aroused???"
  20. I too have a dose of Red Sox fatigue. Going into the playoffs, I was hoping for a Colorado vs. Cleveland World Series. Since that's still possible, that's still my preference. But I can accept any of the four remaining teams as the World Champions. Now that the Yankees, Phillies, and Cubs are all eliminated, I no longer have anyone to root against. So it's all good.
  21. Here's a scenario for you: Yankees lose today. Joe Torre gets fired tomorrow. Would he (could he) be Willie Randolph's new bench coach? And what would we think of that?
  22. Love that the Phillies got swept. Hope the Yankees share the same fate.
  23. Especially since the stadium is only 31 years old. Shea is actually older, but nobody want to acknowledge that fact.
  24. You're really expecting a World Series appearance by the Mets in 2008? You're a lot more optimistic than I am.
