  1. I guess that's one of the reasons I don't bother watching. I'm willing to walk around like a zombie the day after a late Mets World Series game, but I'm not going to do that for Rockies and Red Sox. If I'm going to turn it off in the fifth inning, why even bother watching?
  2. ="bmfc1"]If he's in the NL, it makes an opponent better and The Mets will play that team more than the six times they play the MFYs. If it's an NL Central or NL West team, the Mets would most likely play them the same six times. (Maybe seven. Maybe even nine, but probably six.)
  3. I really hope he's played his last game as a Yankee.
  4. I've watched enough games on Extra Innings to know that some home team announcers are abysmal. If the Padres had made the playoffs, and their local announcers were on the national telecasts, you'd certainly be tempted to watch with the sound muted.
  5. I'd rather see Teufel manage the Flushing team.
  6. Wow. Very good. Have the Mets ever had an All-Star MVP? I'm thinking maybe Matlack in 1972. And it could very well have been Mazzilli in 1979.
  7. The Zephyrs, I might as well mention, used to play in Denver and were bumped out of their former home when the current NL champs entered the National League. Denver Zephyrs was supposed to be the name of a major league expansion franchise, but the group who owned the Zephyrs didn't win the franchise when it was granted for the 1993 expansion.
  8. I'll guess that the oldest was Sandy Junior.
  9. Eek. If you gave me a thousand years, I wouldn't have come up with that. I can name one Who: Roger Daltrey. (I guess two, if you count Cindy Lou Who.)
  10. Evolution takes a long time, but it's not necessarily gradual. One theory is that it happens in bursts; a species will stay the same for thousands of generations and then, over a much shorter period of time, experience a dramatic change. I think LaRussa and Eckersley in 1988 was one of those leaps. I'd say that, other than the DH, the ninth-inning specialist is the worst innovation I've seen in my years of watching baseball, which dates back to 1971.
  11. Let's see... I know that Keith and Roger played themselves on Seinfeld and John Stearns played himself, briefly, on Eight is Enough. Did Pete Harnisch ever appear as himself on a prime-time network show? If so, then there's the connection.
  12. I hope they DO play that game. I'd like to be able to watch the season opener on Sunday night on TV, rather than watch it on GameCast while sitting at work on a weekday afternoon. I care more about my convenience than I do the Mets players'. Especially after that September they gave me.
  13. I remember going to a White Sox-Angels game in Comiskey Park in 1988 and while looking around the stadium I spotted Joe Torre in the broadcast booth. I never would have guessed at that time that his future contained more glory than his past.
  14. Yeah, well, it won't be as bad as the looks on OUR faces as we fell apart in the second half of September. It'll take a lot of doing for any team to out-misery the Mets in 2007.
  15. I voted Rockies but I don't have a strong preference either way. I don't give a rats ass about one league over the other. I used to prefer the National League because that's the league the Mets play in, but I abandoned that a long time ago. (I first rooted for the AL team in the World Series in 1993, and did so again in 1997, 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006.)
  16. When I saw the category, and before I clicked on the link, two movies immediately popped into my head: Humphrey Bogart saying good-bye to Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca and Charlton Heston discovering the Statue of Liberty in Planet of the Apes. Bogie made the list, Heston didn't.
  17. That leaves two possible managing destinations for Joe Torre: St. Louis and Pittsburgh. I can't imagine he'd go to Pittsburgh.

  19. I really hope the next Yankee manager's name isn't Bobby Valentine. Knowing the Yankees' penchant for subverting Mets history, it's something that could happen.
  20. Mattingly's recent whimpering about how he's "not ready" should rule him out, for this year and probably forever. They should hire a guy who wants the job.
  21. You heard it here first: Willie Randolph's bench coach. (I'm not predicting that it will happen, just that it will be speculated.)
  22. Yes, that's true. It did turn out nicer that the Yankees said, Joe, come back, and he said no. But if I were Torre, I wouldn't have let it get this far; I wouldn't have given them the chance to announce that they didn't want me back.
  23. I guess he does have an ounce of self-respect. It just took him a while to dig it out.
  24. Good for him! He should have told them to fuck off a week ago. Better late than never, though.
