  1. Spooky Wilson. David Fright.
  2. According to the Mets, he's day to day.
  3. Why are we angry about this? If anyone is silly enough to spend $350 for a brick it's their own fault. If I could sell the bricks on my house for $350 each I'd sure do it. I've seen bricks like this all over the place, including at Disneyland. Why shouldn't the Mets do it as well?
  4. The version I read in my print edition this morning called him a "legend" and an "immortal."
  5. The problem is, they'll probably tear the place down in 40 or so years to build a new state-of-the-art (as of 2050) stadium. Then all of those bricks will end up in a Staten Island landfill.
  6. That article in the News suggested the Mets might be willing to go five years for Posada. He'll be 37 next year. A five year contract would take him past his 41st birthday. If they do that, they're nuts. I'd be willing to give him two. Maybe I'd even cross my fingers and offer three. But anything beyond that is way too risky, especially for a catcher.
  7. The park in Hiroshima didn't look all that big, but I only saw it from the outside.
  8. What year was that when the Mets almost (but didn't) sign Nakamura? I have to think, what with that David Wright guy and all, that the non-signing turned out pretty okay.
  9. I think it's understandable to have less excitement about subsequent championships. If the Mets had won in 1988, I wouldn't have been quite as fired up as I was in 1986. This guy has just taken it to such an extreme that he really ought to categorize himself as a former fan. When I read that item, I first thought, "what a dope!" But he's not really a dope, he's just a guy who has lost interest. And there's really nothing wrong with that. He's certainly entitled to not care about the Boston Red Sox if they no longer float his boat.

And these columnists are playing to the fans, not mapping team strategy. What they're saying is, "The Mets should do this because the Yankees would hate it" but what they really mean, I think, is "Mets fans should love this because Yankees fans would hate it."
  11. I finally watched Torre's Monday appearance on Letterman. His best line was about how, after the "divorce," he and the Yankees have to decide who gets custody of Billy Crystal. (I'd say that whoever the winner is is actually the loser.)
  12. Rube Walker is the first and most obvious choice. Beyond that, hmmmm. I'd hold off on Rick Peterson for now. Not just because he's still "in office" but because there could be many years remaining in his tenure. (If he had been here for 15 years and was still around, that would be different.) I think I'd add Stottlemyre and Robinson (Bill, not Sheriff). For the fourth choice, I'd have to consider Yost or Piggy. I'd ask guys who were with the team, or who covered the team (I'd start with Marty Noble) to get some opinions on their relative merits. There aren't a lot of great options to choose from.
  13. Well, he (or anyone else) can still take Zambrano any time they please. If we get to a certain point, we can let Steve Rogers finish everyone off.
  14. I offered Victor Zambrano to Valadius when he griped that he didn't get an assignment.
  15. You never know...
  16. This isn't exactly Featured Archive material, is it?
  17. I guess he could be helpful on a one-year deal, but I'd much prefer someone closer to 30 than to 40. Schilling, if he did sign with the Mets, would be the second Alaska-born Met. (Dave Williams recently became the first. Both pitchers were born in Anchorage.)
  18. When I read that column in the paper this morning I knew immediately it was the kind of thing that we'd jump all over. The only thing that might make us forget the 2007 collapse is a 2008 Worlds Championship. Nothing that happens between now and next October is going to erase that memory. Nothing.
  19. Point 1 is the one that resonates most with me. I understand Point 2, but I think the juice you get from 50 homers more than offsets the return on the dollar. And Points 2 and 3 would be negated under the scenario where Wright moves to second base and Delgado sticks around. (That's not my preference, though. I'd rather see Wright or Rodriguez at first base, and have an established second baseman like Castillo or someone else play second.)
  20. Of course, the Mets aren't yet permitted to express interest in Torrealba, or any free agent other than those who ended 2007 as a Met. I suspect that this is speculation that has moved through the grapevine and is now being reported as fact. I bet they ARE probably interested, but I doubt that the Denver Post knows that.
  21. "To stick it to the Yankees" isn't a very valid reason for spending almost $300 million.
  22. I think that sounds right.
  23. Raging wild fires aside, Southern California can be a pleasant place to live.
  24. This is a good indication of how badly the Mets need to acquire a major league catcher this winter. I can't imagine any of those guys getting the starting catcher job for 2008. (Maybe one of them could win a backup role, but even that seems unlikely.) Mike DiFelice is more likely to be the starting '08 catcher than any of those four.
  25. What is he, crazy? Isn't he concerned about his Yankee legacy? Why is he agreeing to manage the Toledo Mud Hens?
