  2. Give him number 8. I don't think it ought to be retired.
  3. He should hook up with Anna Benson. They'd be baseball's favorite couple.
  4. HahnSolo wrote: Is there anyone, anywhere, who thinks the Torrealba signing is a good idea? If so, I haven't found him (well, except Omar). Well, I'm not giddy over it, but it may turn out alright. I don't really know whether or not he'll be better than Lo Duca. And I don't know of any better options, unless that kid from Arizona is available.
  5. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Baltimore is really more like Philly than Washington. Yes, it is. But Philadelphia has a larger area that's safe and interesting to visitors. Baltimore, from what I've seen, is nice near the Inner Harbor but everywhere else is worth avoiding. I once had an assignment at a college in the ghettos of Baltimore and it was like visiting the set of "The Wire." (I guess I actually WAS visiting the set of "The Wire.")
  6. I don't object to four years plus an option. (Although three would be better.) As long as Yorvit is healthy and reasonably productive he should still be tradeable in 2010 or 2011 if the Mets have a better catcher handy. And if it turns out that he's the best guy they can get, either because of his performance or because of a lack of other options, at least the Mets would have him locked up for as much as much as five years.
  7. What's also worth mentioning is that this is a more expensive contract than the one Rodriguez got from Texas, the one that everyone thought was insane. What's worse, giving a 25-year-old ten years and $252 million, or a 32-year-old ten years and $275 million? They're paying him more money and the contract, instead of running through his prime years like the Texas contract did, runs through his declining years. What if he pulls a Roberto Alomar and suddenly fizzles in his mid-thirties? (That, naturally, is what I'd hope for from him as a Yankee.)
  8. But none of them are infielders.
  9. ="Edgy DC"] Rich Folkers as rightfielder? Not yet. Please tell me there's still hope! ="Edgy DC"] (Afterthought, if you designate a relief pitcher as "RP," rather than "P," well, give a hand to Robert Person, who appeared 16 times in the role before buying us an Olerud.) And no starting pitchers who where SP either. In fact, the Mets have never had a player at all with those initials. (They did have a GM and a manager though.)
  10. Just another example of that 749 and 1 scenario that Steve Phillips worried about.
  11. More fun trivia: The first designated hitter who had the initials DH was Danny Heep in the 1986 World Series. Other Mets who had those initials are: Dave Hillman (1962) Don Hahn (1971 - 1974) Doug Henry (1995, 1996) Darryl Hamilton (1999 - 2001)
  12. If we give up Maine we're now looking for two starting pitchers.
  13. It took me a minute to get the JoeJessica reference. Torrealba, by the way, means Tower Dawn. And that would be a good name for a racehorse, if Lo Duca wants to name a pony after the guy who replaces him.
  14. The Mets should trade Jose Reyes for him because it would make a big splash, forever steal the back pages from the Yankees, fill seats at Citi Field, and double the number of subscribers to SNY.
  15. With ten votes in so far, 9 of 10 prefer to keep Milledge over Gomez and 7 of 10 prefer to keep Humber over Pelfrey.
  16. Let's get hypothetical! The Mets have a chance to make a deal for a player that YOU really want them to get. (I don't want to cloud this with particular players. Let's just stipulate that he's REALLY good.) The other team insists that the Mets include a young pitcher and a young outfielder. Given your choice of the available options, which would you prefer to see happen?
  17. I voted Silva. Six months younger. (Not that that's a big deal at all.) And Hispanic! Pitches more innings per year. Better lifetime WHIP and ERA. Lohse, though, has a better lifetime BAA and strikes out (and walks) more batters. Both give up homers at about the same pace. Silva had a better 2007. And, not to be overlooked, Silva will attract more viewers to SNY and more fans to the new stadium which will open in 2009. (I've learned that you're supposed to say that whenever you advocate the Mets getting a particular player.)
  18. The only difference between many of these columnists and WFAN callers is that the columnists actually get paid for their empty babble. Nice gig if you can get it.
  19. smg58 wrote: If he goes on the market next year, would that affect how you approach second base this year? No. That would be the cart before the horse. Right now the thing to do is make the 2008 team as good as it can be. If they sign Castillo, for example, to a multi-year contract and then discover that Hudson is available next winter they can always sign Hudson and deal Castillo. They may or may not get optimal value for Castillo, but that would be next winter's problem.
  20. Well, he used to be four years old!
  21. Because that's where his mom was when she went into labor?
  22. One thing we have to remember: Just because they're saying it now, doesn't mean things might not change between now and Opening Day. I think David Wright most likely will remain at third base, but don't go thinking it's written in stone. Also, how could Alex Rodriguez's name not have come up at all??? If I was having an off-the-record chat with Omar Minaya I'd certainly ask him about his plans for Rodriguez and a bunch of other specific players. Sheesh!
  23. I would have liked him on a two-year deal but at his age four is way too many years.
  24. Yeah, I'd rather move Reyes to second than Wright.
  25. I'd also rather swap Gomez and keep Lasty.
