  1. Yeah, it may very well be Omar. The Daily News this morning, in handicapping the Rodriguez Race, pretty much dismissed the Mets as not interested. That may be the case, but I'm not convinced.
  2. I got a kick out of the e-mail that Marty Noble was responding to when he ranked Mets centerfielders. The writer was offended that Noble had earlier referred to Cameron as the Mets best centerfielder ever. He said, "I've been watching baseball for 30 years! How can you put Cameron over Agee and Mays? Didn't you see that catch that Mays made in the 1954 World Series?" I liked how Noble pointed out that 30 years ago, Agee and Mays had both already retired, and that Mays was playing for the Giants, not the Mets, in 1954. I was surprised to see Del Unser so highly ranked. I barely remember him, and if pressed, would have considered him more of a Danny Heep kind of guy, more of a bat than a glove. I don't remember him at all as a defensive whiz, but he was a Met during a couple of years when I was following the team but wasn't paying as much attention. (Too distracted by Marvel comics.)
  3. Oh. I don't see Rodriguez as displacing either one of those guys. (If that turns out to be the plan, then I certainly agree with you.) He's more likely to displace a Valentin or a Delgado. (Actually, he's more likely to displace a Dodger or a Cub, but that's another story.) And if Delgado, for example, becomes a trade chip, then that's not really a problem at all, unless, of course, you can't find a taker.
  4. Edgy DC wrote: The problem is that the guy that's displaced becomes the most marketable trading chip. I'm not sure I see why that would be a problem. ="Bob Klapisch"]Friends of Rodriguez believe he would have a sincere interest in playing for the Mets at the right price, of course regardless of how it would damage his Yankee legacy. This is another stupid line from the column. Have we seen any indication that Rodriguez cares about his Yankee legacy? If he did, he would have at least listened to their offer.
  5. I don't see second base as the obvious choice. I'd rather put him at first base. It's a more similar position to third base. You could leverage Wright's strength, which is his reaction time, and take the emphasis away from his weakness, which is his erratic throwing arm. The Mets would then have to trade Delgado. And no, they won't get full value for him in a trade, but it's looking likely that they won't get full value from him as a regular first baseman either.
  6. I'm less concerned with how much money the Yankees spend than I am with how many games they win. (Or better, fail to win.) I can only see Rodriguez leaving the Yankees as a good thing.
  7. I saw a photo of Joe Girardi in the paper today, and I swear, at first glance I thought it was a computer-hybrid mixing the faces of Barak Obama and Wesley Clark. I thought it was an illustration for some goofy article suggesting they'd make a Dream Team as running mates in 2008.
  8. Wow, five "no ways." I'm a little surprised at that. Here's my prediction: he'll eventually sign for $224 million for eight years. (Average annual value: $28 million.) I hope that the Mets will be in the hunt.
  9. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Quick! Name five Mets players who were able to speak Papiamentu! Nobody? Oh, come on, this was easy! The answer is, of course, Danny Heep, Lute Barnes, Mike Glavine, Roy Staiger, and, this last one was the tricky one, Mark Clark. Thanks for playing, everybody!
  10. Quick! Name five Mets players who were able to speak Papiamentu!
  11. Vote for the most generous package you think the Mets should offer if it's necessary to sign Alex Rodriguez.
  12. Unless he has to, of course. He'll take the best offer he gets, but it might turn out to be less than what th Yankees were prepared to offer him.
  13. Tommy Davis in 1967 could be called a star. I wouldn't say Cleon had attained stardom by that point.
  14. From the New York Times: ]In an interview before Borass announcement, Steinbrenner said he would try to impress on Rodriguez the value of winning titles and making his legacy as a Yankee. He related a story of talking to Joe DiMaggio, who told him his championships would not have been half as meaningful if he had won them for any other team. Does he want to go into the Hall of Fame as a Yankee, Steinbrenner said, or a Toledo Mud Hen? How great would it be if the Mets and the Red Sox each won 24 World Championships over the next 48 years?
  15. I don't mind that MLB and the networks made less money for fewer games.
  16. Yeah, there was nothing wrong with Beltran's September. Perhaps Perez is unaware that Beltran was the Schaefer Mets Player of the Month in September.
  17. Then they have eleven years remaining on the desperation clock.
  18. What does JTLYK mean? Wright offered to move to second for Rodriguez earlier this year. I think I'd rather see him move to first and the Mets could deal Delgado. (Or move him to catcher! JTLYK!) If the Yankees are really out of the picture as they say (and that remains to be seen) then this is nothing but good news. When the Yankees got Rodriguez, I never would have dared hope that he'd play four years for them and never appear in a World Series game. Despite the two MVP's, the A-Rod in the Bronx thing didn't turn out badly at all. Despite the fact that Rodriguez is prissy and snively and likes Toronto lap dancers, I'd welcome him to Flushing. My guess though is that his most likely destination is Wrigley Field. Should be interesting to watch this story continue to unfold.
  19. They couldn't beat the Washington Nationals. I don't see how the could've beaten the Boston Red Sox.
  20. Padres are releasing Marcus Giles. I was interested in him last year. Not so much this year.
  21. So where do we think he'll play in 2008? My guess: Savannah.
  22. Feel free to take my Victor Zambrano.
  23. I'm wondering what Citi Field's number will be, compared to Shea's 111,000.
  24. Piniero isn't available; he signed a deal with St. Louis.
