  1. Another Mets farmhand heard from. Cliff McWilliams recently posted a memory of 1963 Mets coach Clyde McCullough.
  2. Do we even know who or what the Mets gave up to get Mota? I just looked it up in the 2007 Baseball Register and it said that the Mets got Mota for "a player to be named or cash." I don't recall them ever sending a player to Cleveland. Did they send cash? Or was he a complete freebie? If so, that IS a good deal.
  3. I think it's been established that Guillermo Mota would have been a fair exchange for Laird. (Unless someone can make a convincing argument that Laird is considerably better than Estrada.)
  4. I like how the lesson that Steve draws from this is, essentially, that it's cheaper to take a subway than to take a cab.
  5. I don't even know where to begin! Somebody's had so many brushes with greatness that he's unaffected by them is seeking out the place where the players hang out. He's feels he's being totally cool, but someone complains about him and he's singled out for ejection. After he's ejected, his cousin tackles him on a Chicago sidewalk. I guess you "had to be there" but I'm glad I wasn't!
  6. Is Laird really anyone to get excited about? I mean, it looks like he'd be decent enough, but why trade anyone to get him? He doesn't seem like he'd be much of an improvement at all over Estrada and Castro. Let's go into 2008 with what we have at catcher and try again in 2009. (Too bad Jesus Flores isn't an option.) 7. I'm also curious about David Wright leading the NL in "times on base" with 297. I haven't yet done the math, but I assume it means H + BB + HBP? Or does it count reaching on a fielder's choice or on an error?

Right now I'd say Endy is the fourth, but it could become Gomez. But my point was that if the Mets were to import another outfielder, then Lastings would become the fourth.
  9. The past has shown us that when you have four outfielders they can call get a lot of playing time. If the Mets can bring in another outfield bat for 2008 and hang on to Milledge, it will allow Lasty to mature but also allow for some fallback and flexibility. It's been rumored that Andruw Jones might be willing to sign a one-year contract and try free agency again next year, hopefully with a better season behind him. If he's willing to do it as a right fielder, I think it's worth looking at. As a fourth outfielder (especially in an outfield with Moises Alou in it) Milledge should get plenty of playing time. But if the Mets can't get a big bat to join their outfield, I'd be okay with handing the job to Lastings. By 2009 he should be fully ready (I personally think he'll be fully ready in 2008) and I think he's worth hanging on to.
  10. Adam Rubin was kinda saying the same thing this morning in the News. He picked up on something Omar said about the Mets now having "depth at catcher." Rubin says that the Mets may turn around and deal Estrada or they could non-tender him if they got another catcher through some other means. I guess it's possible, but I think it's likely that Estrada will play for the Mets next year. He'll play as often as Castro allows him to play. (And Castro will play as often as Estrada allows him to play.)
  11. I'm pleased.
  12. He likes to cavort with Steve Rogers at 2 a.m.
  13. Yes. While I no longer give a fig about a no-hitter, having a Mets player have an MVP season would be a very nice thing. It's sustained enjoyment over six months rather than nine innings.
  14. I don't really see how Bruce Berenyi is relevant here. When the Mets got him he was youngish and talented. More like an Oliver Perez than a Johann Santana. Nobody considered him a "front line starter" which is the term that was used at the beginning of this conversation. I don't think anyone wants to see Milledge or Martinez or Mulvey traded for another Bruce Berenyi. But if there's a chance to get an established successful starter like Santana or Haren, then that's a different story.
  15. Rollins.
  16. Remember, though, that the voting took place immediately after the end of the regular season, when memories of the Mets epic collapse were in the front of everyone's minds. THAT is going to cost David Wright some MVP points. Probably a lot of points. The Phillies overtaking the Mets gives Rollins a big advantage. My guess is that Rollins wins it.
  17. The part that's not true is the "whole purpose" part.

I used to but then realized that for every Nolan Ryan, Amos Otis, Ken Singleton and Kevin Mitchell there are a dozen David Wests, Alex Ochoas, Alex Escobars, Bill Pulsiphers, Tim Learys, Paul Wilsons, Octavio Dotels and Ryan Thompsons. Omar, trade whoever you need to and get us a frontline starter. I've noticed the same thing. That's why I'd prefer to keep Milledge over Gomez and Martinez; he's at least had some success at the major league level. I think he's less of a "suspect" than the others.
  19. It's official: Mets press release wrote: The New York Mets announced today that they have re-signed free agent infielder Luis Castillo to a four-year contract. Castillo will team up with the Mets Foundation to donate a portion of the contract to charities.
  20. 1. It was a slow day. If it was baseball season, he wouldn't have been able to win the day with the total that he got. 2. He got a bunch of referrals from this page: http://metsarebetterthansex.blogspot.com/2007/04/in-memoriam-eric-hillman-1992-1994.html
  21. He also got one day as the UMDB hit leader. He's the lowest ranked Met (at 819 out of 821) to get a win. He has more wins than Todd Hundley, Robin Ventura, Ray Knight, Carlos Delgado, and many others.
  22. Well, yeah, but they also said the same thing about Yorvit...
  23. It sounds to me like the contract is guaranteed. (Most are, unless they include the term "option year.") If they cut him after two years, they'd have to eat years three and four. More likely if the Mets decide to go with someone else, they'd trade Castillo and eat a portion of his salary.

  25. I think I learned more than I need to know about Aubrey in that first excerpt.
