  1. I've toyed with the idea of referring to these stadiums in the UMDB by their mailing addresses. For example, instead of calling it Pacific Bell Park or AT&T Park, I'd call the Giants' home stadium "24 Willie Mays Plaza, San Francisco" (I just looked that up; I doubt that all the stadiums have addresses that are that good!)

  6. I generally give points to relief pitchers based on the score and the number of innings pitched. If they pitch one inning or less, they have to have been unscored upon. (Or at least, no earned runs.) If they pitch more than one, they can earn points from me even if they're not scoreless. A scoreless inning in a tie- or one-run game gets more from me than a scoreless inning when the Mets have a three-run lead. So if Feliciano pitches a scoreless 8th when the Mets are up 2-1, and then the Mets score two more runs and Wagner pitches a scoreless ninth with a 4-1 lead, I'll give more to Feliciano. I also give more points to guys who come in with runners on base and get out of the jam (something Wagner almost never gets a chance to do) or to guys who face three tough hitters, as opposed to the bottom of the order.

  8. This is one of the things about corporate naming that bugs me, beyond the hideousness of some of the names. (3Com Park? Yeesh.) There's no stability in the park's name. (I keep forgetting, for example, that Bank One Ballpark is now Chase Field. Nor do I remember the current name of Pacific Bell Park.) I know old-style ballpark names have changed in the past. (Tiger Stadium had at least two previous names, and Shibe Park and Sportsman's Park were both renamed.) But at least those name changes were a lot less frequent. Now stadium names are too transient. I think it has to affect the way they're thought of and how they'll be remembered.
  9. I gave a point to Perez for going 6 innings. (My policy is to always give something to a pitcher who goes 6.) I'm giving nothing to Figueroa. My line in the sand is six innings. Nothing for 5 bad innings, a sip for 6.

It was the first year in a long time that it was fun to be a Mets fan again. (Seaver! Strawberry! HERNANDEZ!) I had a friend, a fellow Mets fan, who was away in the Air Force that year and pretty much missed the season. When he came home at Christmastime I told him the Mets had turned a corner and were about to become a good team. He thought I was crazy (we thought that EVERY year) but I finally managed to convince him that the feeling was different this time, genuine. Fortunately, 1984 proved me to be correct.

  15. A non-specific apology would suffice.
  16. I think Namor was born that year...
  17. By the end of the season I was getting calls from 12 different major league teams and eventually signed with the New York Mets. I guess that means he was undrafted?
  18. I like how pitchers used to be called "twirlers."
  19. The April Player of the Month results met with a resounding thud of disapproval, but we'll continue nonetheless. Tomorrow is, once again, Wacky Wednesday, and all three games from the weekend series in Phoenix will be closed and tallied tomorrow morning.
