  1. I'm starting to think that Heilman might be well-served by being Trachseled. In other words, sent to AAA for a few weeks to get himself turned around.
  2. ="SteveJRogers"]# 831 Claudio Vargas And also the 225th all-time starting pitcher in Met history! Second Met named Vargas, first named Claudio. Although there was one Claudell and one Claude. (Quick trivia question: which Met was named Claude?)
  3. I didn't pay much attention to the closing ceremonies for Veterans Stadium, even though I live in the Phillies market. But one thing I do know is that they had Tug McGraw on the mound to recreate the last out of the 1980 World Series. I'd like to see the Mets do something like that with Jerry Koosman and Jesse Orosco. (How great would it be just to see a photo of the two of them, in uniform, together on the mound at Shea?) Bring in Cleon Jones and Marty Barrett and Davey Johnson for good measure. (And Gary Carter and Jerry Grote too, natch!)

In an in-game interview with Howard Johnson the other day, HoJo said that the Mets hitters are working on doing just that. And it makes sense. If 100 pitches is a magic number for the opposing manager, and you KNOW that, then why not intentionally try to get the opposing pitcher up to 100 pitches as soon as possible? Of course, it would be better if you were exploiting the other manager's foolishness while your own manager wasn't engaging in the same, but we don't live in a perfect world.
  5. Nope, no Nate in the UMDB. But I've now added the Gil Sr./Gil Jr. relationship.
  6. Maine 3.5 Church 3.5 Sanchez 0.5 Wagner 0.5 Schneider 0.8 Alou 0.6 Wright 0.6
  7. Willets Point wrote: ="Benjamin Grimm"]Schaefer participation is at record lows. I'm beginning to think that I may not bother doing this in 2009, but we'll see how the rest of the season goes. Grump, grump, grump. I haven't had time to even watch a game in two weeks much less vote on one. I'm just saying... I don't mind doing the Schaefer stuff because, as I've said, it's not a whole lot of work. But if I'm only doing it for five people, then maybe even the little effort it takes is too much.
  8. That's all I needed to hear! Promote Oberkfell NOW!

  13. As I've said before, I'd really like to see a smart guy managing the Mets.
  14. metsguyinmichigan wrote: But do you want to see it on people like Fernando Tatis? Fernando Martinez, maybe. But not a guy who packed only an overnight bag when he left New Orleans. Doesn't bother me at all. As for Fernando Martinez, I'd rather he got a number that will more firmly belong to him. I think I'd give him a 25, if it were up to me.
  15. I remember when I was in, I think, fifth grade (which would have been around 1973) a lot of my friends were really into Speed Racer but it never did anything for me. I was more of a Flintstones guy. I did see the show a few times, but remember nothing about it other than the theme song. I don't even know who Racer X is.
  16. I'm starting to think that everyone, us, the media, the bloggers, everyone, should just ignore this thing except for on the rare occasions when they have someone worthwhile pulling the sign. A Lincoln Mercury dealer from Staten Island? Ignore it! Completely! Guiseppe Franco? Ignore it! Jerry Koosman? Talk about it! Write about it! Celebrate it!
  17. Nah. Keith was terrific, but I don't want to see his number retired.
  18. ="SteveJRogers":2cqwj0s8]Toby "Don't call me Al" Borland?[/quote:2cqwj0s8] Just as with Charlie Williams the day before, it was the anniversary of a trade. (That causes a link to the player page to appear on the UMDB home page.) Elster88 May 14 2008 09:55 PM Sounds like you're stuffing the ballot box. TheOldMole May 14 2008 11:01 PM Don't you remember? You called me Al -- It was Al, Al, all the time... Benjamin Grimm Jun 08 2008 05:44 PM Ron Swoboda is getting a much larger-than-usual number of clicks today. The volume was high enough that I was worried that he might have died, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Has Ron been in the news today? I can't find any reason for his surge today. Kong76 Jun 08 2008 06:07 PM He was on Mets Weekly yesterday. Benjamin Grimm Sep 16 2008 01:10 PM Eddie Yost yesterday was a rare non-player to lead the UMDB in daily hits. (And he's currently enjoying a healthy lead in today's clicking as well.) I'm sure it has something to do with confused web surfers looking for information on fired Milwaukee manager Ned Yost. themetfairy Sep 16 2008 01:39 PM ="Benjamin Grimm"]Eddie Yost yesterday was a rare non-player to lead the UMDB in daily hits. (And he's currently enjoying a healthy lead in today's clicking as well.) I'm sure it has something to do with confused web surfers looking for information on fired Milwaukee manager Ned Yost. They aren't related, are they? Benjamin Grimm Sep 16 2008 01:55 PM Not that I'm aware of. G-Fafif Sep 16 2008 02:08 PM Yet thanks to Doug Melvin you can refer to either Yost as the Walking Man. Benjamin Grimm Oct 17 2008 10:55 AM Huge numbers today for the Bob Millers. When I checked the stats a few minutes ago, I thought that someone named Bob Miller must have flown his plane into a jewelry store and beheaded a cat. We're talking that kind of huge. Turns out, the Bobs have Paul Lukas to thank: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=lukas/081017&sportCat=nfl soupcan Oct 17 2008 10:59 AM Not so for the Bobby Jonses? Benjamin Grimm Oct 17 2008 11:00 AM He didn't link to the UMDB for Bobby Jones. Instead he used soxprospects.com and rnding3rd.com. soupcan Oct 17 2008 11:17 AM Ah. Benjamin Grimm Oct 17 2008 11:34 AM These numbers are astounding. I know I'm probably the only one who cares about this stuff, but what the heck. Bob G. Miller is getting the greater benefit of these links, because he's listed first. But he's already in fifth place in single-day volume, and Bob L. Miller is in ninth place. There are many hours to go yet, so I'll keep peeking to see how much they both rise on the list. 12/27/2005 Jeff Reardon 10/11/2006 Cory Lidle 6/19/2007 David Cone 7/30/2004 Kevin Mitchell 10/17/2008 Bob G. John Cougar Lunchbucket Dec 02 2008 08:29 PM Happened to notice the other day that Rich Rodriguez won the day. Huh? 19. This is getting just a teensy bit gross.
  20. I think cleon is taking the piss.
