  1. The lesson to be learned from this is, when you're wrong, and everyone knows you're wrong, and you secretly also realize that you were wrong, the best way to handle the situation is to get belligerent.
  2. Oh, of course they have a chance. They're not at all likely to win 95 games, but the Phillies aren't running away with the division. The Mets could very well sneak into the playoffs with 87 or 88 wins. I don't see much reason to be optimistic, but there's still reason to be hopeful.

  6. Braves lost. Let's hope the Phillies do too.
  7. I bet this game doesn't get a whole lot of votes. Box score Tatis 0.5 Schneider 0.5
  8. This game is going rather poorly, isn't it?

  10. David Wright not in the starting lineup. M's score in the first off Perez on a sac fly by Sexson.
  11. Jon Heyman, SI.com wrote: The Mets agreed to terms with their first pick of the first round, power hitting first baseman Ike Davis of Arizona State. It is believed Davis, the son of former Yankees reliever Ron Davis, received in the range of $1.5 million. The deal is pending a physical. Davis was the 18th pick overall and is expected to be assigned to New York's Class A Brooklyn Cyclones. Davis, a junior, batted .385 with 16 home runs and 76 RBIs for the Sun Devils this year. He also posted a .742 slugging percentage and .457 on-base percentage. The Mets had already signed their other first round draft pick, shortstop Reese Havens of the University of South Carolina, for $1.419 million. Havens was the 22nd pick of the draft.
  12. Frayed Knot wrote: P.S. I have no idea what those pictures are all about either. Faith. Fear. Flushing. (I had to right-click the photo of the pretty blonde lady to see that it was Faith Hill.)
  13. This must be what Keith means by "unconscious."
  14. They should invite that Seattle fan who wants to kill Carlos Beltran. The Mets can all gang up on him and break his ankles. That would be a good team-building exercise, and it would be a fun and bloodthirsty way to kick off a Tuesday evening of baseball. Why aren't I in charge of these things?
  15. I have my doubts that the Mets will go after Sabathia one year after giving Santana a seven-year contract, but who knows? If they go with an internal option at first base to replace Delgado then maybe they'll be willing to spring for another very expensive long-term pitcher. Right now I would guess that neither Pedro nor Perez will return, but if either of them steps up over the next three months they might put themselves back into consideration. Why are you posting your interesting little questions elsewhere? Especially since that elsewhere is teeming with thugs?
  16. ]Only by being there did I truly understand what the game meant not only to Cooperstown but also to the denomination of baseball and its most devout believers. I think this churchiness is part of the reason I have little interest in Cooperstown anymore. I once bought into that stuff, but I can no longer get reverent about baseball. I do like the idea of playing a real regulation game at Doubleday Field, but I doubt that many teams would want to give up a home date to play at a tiny little out-of-the-way park. If there was still a low-drawing Expos franchise in Montreal, which isn't that far from Cooperstown, then maybe something could be made to work. But you know that the Mets, Yankees, or Red Sox won't give up a home date.
  17. ]"I thought, what the heck did I do to cause this? Gary never led the league in self-awareness, did he?
  18. AG/DC wrote: There are plenty of places (radio, television, print, online etc.) to learn about good books. Oh, of course. I've discovered far more books from those other places than I did from Imus. (I'm still reading more than three years after ditching WFAN and Imus.) I'm just saying that that's the portion of his show that can be interesting, as opposed to the infantile jocularity. (Which isn't.)
  19. Wow. Makes cleon seem rational.
  20. Imus is better when he's not trying to be funny. The scripted bits on his show are just awful. (Richard Nixon, Jack Nicholson, Bill Clinton, Walter Cronkite, etc.) The interviews could be very interesting though, especially when he gets politicians to let their hair down a little bit. And when I listened to his show (I haven't in years) I did learn about some interesting books that I might not otherwise have read.
  21. It was also the first home run ever hit by a Seattle Mariners pitcher.
  22. Meanwhile, Imus is in hot water again, for saying, "There you go." Something about a black athlete who's in some kind of trouble. The details are already making my eyes glaze over.
  23. Voting for all three games from this past weekend's series in Denver against the Rockies will close some time on Wednesday morning: Schaefer POTG 6/20/08 - Mets 7, Rockies 2 Schaefer POTG 6/21/08 - Rockies 7, Mets 1 Schaefer POTG 6/22/08 - Mets 3, Rockies 1 Saturday's loss is still rather light on votes. So far we've heard from themetfairy, Frayed Knot, Benjamin Grimm, metirish, Rockin' Doc, and KC.
  24. Santana 2.5 Beltran 2.5 Heilman 0.5 Sanchez 0.5 Reyes 1
  25. ="Grote15"]Please stop calling me Cleon unless you can prove it..Thanks! I've already proven it. I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince you, because you know damn well that you're cleon.
