(Stronger YES to Darryl since he's come "home.") Franco, not sure. Piazza and Davey: Definitely. Fonzie: Probably. Cashen: Yes. Hundley: No. Orosco: No. Darling: Yes. HoJo: Maybe. These are the guys (and gal) who are already in: Joan Payson, Casey Stengel, Gil Hodges, George Weiss, Bill Shea, Johnny Murphy, Lindsey Nelson, Ralph Kiner, Bob Murphy, Bud Harrelson, Rusty Staub, Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Ed Kranepool, Cleon Jones, Jerry Grote, Tug McGraw, Mookie Wilson, Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, Tommie Agee. Agee, the last selection, went in in 2002. I'd also save spots for Rube Walker and Bobby Valentine.
  2. This focus on defense seems in a way to have come from out of the blue. I know we only started talking about it very recently. Has the defense suddenly gotten worse? If so, then maybe it's just a collective slump that will run its course. And if it's been like this all year, why the sudden focus? Is it because the new manager and staff have decided to address it, where Willie's staff was less inclined to do so? Or it it that other problems, like the bullpen and outfield offense, have become less of an issue. (The pen has certainly improved, and hopefully Church's return will go a long way to solving the weak outfield.)

  10. Last I heard, Alou may be back as early as Friday. And if so, hopefully he'll last the whole weekend. Since we currently have 13 pitchers, I would think that Alou would replace Muniz. I hope Omar finds a way to import a legitimate major league outfielder before July 31.
  11. I'm not sure how much I would have known about them if they weren't Mets. I'll say "yes" to John Stearns. The others will all be "no." That doesn't mean I'd dislike them, but just that I wouldn't particularly have a liking for them. The ones I'd be most likely to dislike would be Dykstra, Reyes, and Wagner. (I'm drawing a blank on what CF&F might stand for.)
  12. I think a "Reyes Attitude Watch" would be a nice thing to wear on days when the "Omar Minaya Watch" clashes with your outfit.
  13. Yeah! Somebody cover SteveRogers' eyes!
  14. Yeah, in 1969 I was six years old and not paying attention. I do remember 1973, which was great, but I wasn't feeling a sense of disbelief that the Mets were in a pennant race. But that is how I felt in 1984.
  15. I bet the Rays fans feel like I did in 1984.
  16. I really shoulda bought a lottery ticket that day.
  17. My prediction: within four weeks, somebody will say it's time to promote Flores to New York, because he can't be any worse than what we have now.
  18. Maybe they can coax Darryl Strawberry out of retirement. He's only four years older than Moises Alou.
  19. All four games from this past weekend's series against the Yankees will close on Wednesday morning: Schaefer POTG 6/27/08, Game 1 - Mets 15, MFYs 6! 21. I'm trying not to feel a sense of dread about this coming week. It's the perfect time for them to kick off a hot streak. Piling up wins against the Cardinals and the Phillies can put the Mets in first place for the division and perhaps give them a better record than the leading Wild Card team. If the Mets can win four in St. Louis this week, I think I'll forgive them for those four losses in San Diego.
  22. Wow! If there really was such a town, we could sell ad space to its Chamber of Commerce.
  23. The "give him until he's 30 to act mature" plan is silly, but it is true that some people mature later than others. So there is reason to hope that Reyes will become less petulant over the next few years, but there's also no guarantee that that will happen. Me, I felt like I got a big dose of maturity when my first child was born. I was 33 at the time. Not that I was a whiny little baby up until that point, but maturity took a big leap forward at that key milestone. Jose, of course, is already a dad, but perhaps parenthood came when he was too young or self-centered for it to have an impact. Or maybe he needs something else to grow him up. Or maybe he never will. I like his skills. I like watching him hit triples and make great defensive plays. I understand that players slump, but his slumps seem, at least, more like funks from my limited perspective. I do wish he was more likable. It's got to be hard to "grow up" in such a high-profile public role, but he's not doing a particularly good job of it.
  24. Rockin' Doc wrote: I'm back from the left coast and will vote on all the Yankee games later tonight if that won't be too late. It won't be. Tomorrow I'll be putting up the announcement that all four games against the Yankees will close on Wednesday morning.
