  2. ]Gaston, who has been special assistant to the president and CEO, had a 681-635 record as manager during his earlier stint. Joining his staff will be first base coach Dwayne Murphy, third base coach Nick Leyva and hitting coach Gene Tenace. Wait a minute! I thought Nick Leyva bolted from the Kingsport Mets to take a job with the Mariners! Did he turn around and quit Seattle the very next day to take a job with Toronto?
  3. I thought it was because he had an Edge.
  4. Yes, Tatis has been a success. And so have Raul Casanova and Carlos Muniz. It's just that the farm system wasn't deep enough to replace Pagan AND Alou AND Church all at the same time. I would bet that most farm systems wouldn't be, but the Mets had that weakness exposed. The other rap against the farm system has been that there's not much trading fodder left. That was probably true on February 2, when the Mets made the Santana deal, especially since Fernando Martinez was deemed virtually untouchable. But that kind of thing can take care of itself in time. Now the Mets have a bunch of young guys who are establishing themselves as prospects, and thereby increasing their trade value. I would suspect that if the Mets wanted to trade youth for an established player this winter, they'd be able to put something together again.
  5. I think the only problem with the farm is for short-term needs. When the Mets had a few guys on the DL, there were few players ready to step in and play in the majors. Having to promote guys like Nick Evans made the system look worse than it is.
  6. Yeah, really. I wouldn't fire a guy for being ethical.
  7. I wonder: Could the Mets have gotten Santana without including Guerra? (They would surely have had to have replaced him in the package with someone else.) Or would Bernazard have let the deal collapse over Delois Guerra? Interesting stuff.
  8. Voting for Wednesday night's ten-inning Mets win in Anaheim will close some time over the weekend: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=9349 Seven voters so far: themetfairy, Frayed Knot, soupcan, John Cougar Lunchbucket, Benjamin Grimm, seawolf17, and Centerfield.

  10. I got it immediately! All of the others left me clueless, but I got THIS one immediately! Oh
  11. GUY CONTI Edit: Oops! Twice too late!
  12. I wonder about that myself. That is, I wonder about what the organization's attitude is regarding their different Single A teams. It's pretty clear that St. Lucie is the top level, one step below Binghamton. And it also seems like well-regarded prospects, such as Havens, can see some time at Brooklyn. But it looks like Savannah plays a subordinate role to St. Lucie, and Kingsport does the same for Brooklyn. My hunch is that Kingsport and Savannah are for lesser prospects, guys not on the fast track but on the alternative track. If that's true, then a Savannah guy going to Brooklyn can feel that he's making some progress, but he'd be happier if he went to St. Lucie.
  13. I guess a late night West Coast loss is bound to be lightly voted, and Tuesday night's 6-1 Angels victory is an example of this. Six voters so far. Voting will close on Friday morning: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=9336

  15. That, if nothing else, probably means that Uggla is better.
  16. What was it that Fred Wilpon said about Art Howe? Something about how he lit up a room?
  17. I know. I just wanted to give Ron his proper credit; he wasn't wishing, he was predicting. I actually did something similar at Shea on October 25, 1986. When the Red Sox brought in Bob Stanley in the 10th inning, my friend sitting next to me asked, "Is he any good?" And I said, "You mean, Bob "Wild Pitch" Stanley?" The rest, of course, is history. The difference here is that my "prediction" came purely from wishful thinking while Ron's came from actual insight. I later looked it up, and Stanley hadn't had a single wild pitch that season until that fateful game.

  19. themetfairy wrote: What was great was that the wild pitch came just after Ron Darling said, "This would be a good time for Martinez to throw one into the dirt so Reyes could get to second." And Gary gave Ron his props for predicting that. (I don't recall Ron's exact words -- I think Scarlett is paraphrasing here -- but I think he said something about how Reyes should be prepared to advance because the count called for a breaking ball from Rodriguez, a pitch that might very well end up in the dirt. I watched the ending this morning on TiVo. I set the recording to begin at 12:35 a.m., right after Letterman finished recording, so I joined the game in the bottom of the eighth, just in time to see all the fun. A real nice way to start the morning before heading in the car and driving to work.
  20. Good to see that Reyes is healthy enough to play. I see that Castillo is sitting. Is it his turn to rest, or is it because he was banged up late in the game last night?
  21. Here's all I know about Tony Bernazard, in two words: Street Spanish!
  22. Strangely enough, I've never seen Smallville. Of the series Vic ranked, these are the ones I remember having watched, and my order of preference: 1) Adventures of Superman (1952-1958) 2) Flash (1990-91) 3) Lois & Clark (1993-97) 4) Wonder Woman (1976-1979) 5) Incredible Hulk (1978-1982) 6) Batman (1966-1968) 7) Shazam! (1974-76)
  23. He's married! He shouldn't be worried about the grey in his beard! (Just like I'm not worried about the grey in mine.)
  24. According to the card, they drew four walks in the bottom of the ninth.
  25. Only four people have voted for Monday night's win in Anaheim of Los Angeles. (They are metfairy, Benjamin Grimm, John Cougar Lunchbucket, and Frayed Knot.) Voting will close tomorrow morning regardless. http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=9316
