  5. I remember, during his post-managing days, he was in the broadcast booth during a game I was watching, and he said, "I have a grandson who's a pig." And he didn't mean a slob; he meant the four-legged kind of pig with a curly tail.
  6. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: It was a joke that Shazam wasn't actually the name of the superhero, but Captain Marvel. And it was very dumb that they had different actors playing Shazam and his alter-ego. In the comics, Billy Batson is a kid, a paperboy, whose alter-ego is the big grown-up superhero Captain Marvel. If they stayed true to that, then they'd pretty much have to have two actors. I don't remember, though, was Billy Batson a kid in that series?
  7. WHAT???? He reads Dondi??? I DON'T LIKE TO HEAR THAT!!!!
  8. No, he was just a manager. The list includes guys who never coached, like Davey Johnson and Casey Stengel and others.
  9. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: ="soupcan"]Why'd Gary and ron make such a big deal of the Reyes-Manuel thing? Reyes doesn't want to come out, Manuel wants to play it safe. I'd expect both guys to act exactly the way they did. Oh come on Soupy. Reyes was a belligerent dick in the very first inning of Manuel's very first game. Really interesting test of Manuel's leadership right off the bat. I'm with Lunchbucket. That was completely infantile. If Jose plays tonight, I'd bat him ninth. Teach him a little humility.
  10. This whole thing is being blown WAY out of proportion. I don't think the Mets late-night press release was evil or cowardly or anything like that. They were clueless, in that they didn't foresee how it would look to issue a press release at 3 a.m. New York time. They can rightfully be criticized for bumbling, both in allowing the prolonged deathwatch and for the late night press release. But to think that the Mets tried to "sneak" the firing past anybody at 3 a.m. is ludicrous. There was never even the slightest possibility that the firing would go unnoticed, no matter where or when it was announced. The Mets weren't being sneaky, just naive in underestimating the New York media, and the media, in turn, overreacted. The Daily News this morning had page after page of writers and columnists and fans expressing their anger and display at the Mets' "cowardly act." And the media will continue to beat this drum for as long as it will sell papers. It's nuts. It's like the insane overreaction to Mahmoud Ahmajinedad's appearance at Columbia University last year. They're bound and determined to ferment the outrage, to make us care deeply about something relatively inconsequential. And they know how to do it, too.
  11. I remember them too. That show may belong in a different category, since it was a Saturday morning kids show, and wasn't made for prime time.
  12. Box score Santana 1 Heilman 0.5 Chavez 1.2
  13. I'll spend my week watching Flash. That, for me, was the most enjoyable show on the list.
  14. Just be sure not to put Grote15 in charge.
  15. I agree. I'm very encouraged so far. Of course, we're all rooting for him to do so well that he's invited back, but now that feeling is stronger.
  16. "I can tell you that, yes, Jerry Manuel will be the manager for the rest of the year."
  17. I think so too. But today he appears drunk. He's repeating himself like crazy.
  18. 40 per cent of his words are "um" or "uh." He didn't have time to prepare a written statement?
  19. SNY is covering it, on Daily News Live. Omar will be standing in front of an Angels podium, with an Angels backdrop.
  20. ="cooby"]Five o'clock? Why does he do it when a lot of people are getting into their cars? So they can listen on WFAN maybe? I'm sure Mike and Dawg will be covering it. (I'm more sure that they'll have it than that SNY will.)
  21. Yes, that's true. I don't know if any of the others were even considered candidates for a full-time designation. (Maybe Frank Howard; I'm not sure. But I don't think so.)
  22. The Mets have had more managers or coaches named "Tom" than any other name, 5, although if you combine the Bobs and the Bobby's you also get 5. Strangely, they've had two coaches each with the less common names of Denny, Vern, Red, and even Cookie. We've now had as many coaches named Ken as we've had named Solly, Salty, Sheriff, Mookie, and Rube.
  23. AG/DC wrote: I saw Warthen and assumed you had added all three. Nope, sorry for the confusion. I'm waiting on the other two until their actual roles are announced.
  24. Actually, my official count, including the new guys, is 95: Acta, Manny Aguayo, Luis Alomar, Sandy Alomar, Sandy Apodaca, Bob Bamberger, George Baylor, Don Benedict, Bruce Berra, Yogi Brantley, Mickey Burgess, Tom Cavarretta, Phil Chambliss, Chris Conti, Guy Cottier, Chuck Cubbage, Mike Down, Rick Dusan, Gene Edwards, Doc Engle, Dave Floyd, Bobby Foote, Barry Frazier, Joe Frey, Jim Galante, Matt Gibson, Bob Green, Dallas Haddix, Harvey Harder, Mel Harrelson, Bud Heffner, Don Hemus, Solly Henderson, Rickey Herzog, Whitey Hiller, Chuck Hodges, Gil Hornsby, Rogers Hoscheit, Vern Hough, Charlie Howard, Frank Howe, Art Jackson, Al Johnson, Darrell Johnson, Davey Johnson, Deron Johnson, Howard Kress, Red LaRoche, Dave Lavagetto, Cookie Manuel, Jerry Maxvill, Dal Mays, Willie McCraw, Tom McCullough, Clyde McMillan, Roy Monbouquette, Bill Murphy, Johnny Niemann, Randy Nieto, Tom Oberkfell, Ken Parker, Salty Pavlick, Greg Perlozzo, Sam Peterson, Rick Pettis, Gary Pignatano, Joe Randolph, Willie Robinson, Bill Robinson, Sheriff Robson, Tom Rojas, Cookie Ruffing, Red Ruhle, Vern Sisler, Dick Sommers, Denny Spahn, Warren Spencer, Tom Staub, Rusty Stearns, John Stengel, Casey Stottlemyre, Mel Swisher, Steve Torborg, Jeff Torre, Joe Valentine, Bobby Waits, Rick Walker, Rube Wallace, Dave Walling, Denny Warthen, Dan Westrum, Wes White, Ernie Wilson, Mookie Wine, Bobby Yost, Eddie
  25. The definition of "coach" can sometimes be a little fuzzy. I think that list is pretty accurate, but there may be an omission or two. (Phil Cavaretta, for example, was added much later than he should have been.) Did you count those names right? I get that there are already 92 (including Warthen) with two more (Oberkfell and Aguayo) to be added.
