jeez. don't get thrown out on the bases down by 6 in the 9th!

Is Francona the kind of manager who will verbally skin the guy alive, or will he say nothing and let the player stew in his own juices?

All the more idiotic in that I'm sure they wouldn't have even bothered holding him on first base so he'd get 2nd base uncontested on the very next pitch. Likely it didn't mean anything but they at least had a chance to get some momentum into Game 7. What a waste.

I wouldn't count on it happening in the next few hours, but I think it's on its way out. Manfred has already scheduled a meeting with the Dolans (yes, they're related to the MSG Dolans somehow) during the off-season. I think management as well as the city would love to have political cover from the Commisioner to retire Chief Wahoo; it's an embarrassment to a city that's finally started making itself look good after three quarters of a century of near-continuous civic embarrassments.

There is, of course, a reactionary segment of the fan base (every fan base has a reactionary segment) that wants to keep the Chief, partially out of a desire to cling to traditions and partially from the general "fuck you" attitude that most of us take when pressured to change, even if change happens to be the right thing.

I give it another couple of years. Then a respectful retirement, and maybe a special exhibit on the Chief in the Indians HoF, where they could have a discussion about traditions while recognizing that what was cool in 1950 is ugly and racist in the 21st century.

Yup. If there's even any hint you get thrown out, you stay put.

It's not like Heyward just suddenly learned to throw.

After an Eternity, the Cubs and the Indians Will Have to Wait One More Day

“If you’re a fan of baseball, this is the best outcome you could possibly hope for in a World Series anyone’s been alive for,” Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo said.

I'm a fan of baseball and this is not the best outcome I could have hoped for...because the Mets are not playing. Dick.

At which point the debate will shift to whether keeping the name 'Indians' is just as bad even with Mr. Wahoo gone.

Chi. Cubs at Cleveland
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, November 2, 2016
Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio
SportsDirect Inc.

A longstanding drought will end for either the Chicago Cubs or Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night while the other team will be flooded with heartbreak. The visiting Cubs forced a decisive Game 7 with Tuesday’s 9-3 victory and are aiming to win their first World Series title since 1908 while the Indians are trying to break a rut that dates back to 1948.

Chicago recovered from a 3-1 deficit to win the last two games but has yet to solve Cleveland ace Corey Kluber, who is looking to become the first starting pitcher since Detroit’s Mickey Lolich in 1968 to record three victories in a single World Series. Chicago shortstop Addison Russell (age 22) is coming off his own sterling performance as he became the second youngest player to hit a grand slam (behind New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle) and matched the Series record of six RBIs – tying Yankees Bobby Richardson (1960), Hideki Matsui (2009) and former St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols (2011). “We’ve been doing this all year, putting new history in history books and you wouldn’t be able to tell that,” Russell told reporters afterward. The one-sided affair allows the Indians to have stellar left-hander Andrew Miller (0.53 ERA, 29 strikeouts in 17 postseason innings in 2016) and right-handed closer Cody Allen (22 strikeouts in 11 2/3 scoreless innings in 2016) rested for Game 7 while Cubs left-handed closer Aroldis Chapman pitched 1 1/3 innings on Tuesday despite the margin.

TV: 8:08 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (1-1, 1.31 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (4-1, 0.89)

Hendricks, who won 16 regular-season games, took a no-decision in Game 3 of the World Series when he allowed six hits and two walks in 4 1/3 scoreless innings. The 26-year-old is ecstatic to have the opportunity to help the Cubs end their 108-year title drought. “Exactly, this is the ultimate dream. You dream of getting to the World Series, winning the World Series,” Hendricks told reporters at a press conference. “When you’re out in your backyard as a kid, playing Little League at the field with your friends, this is the moment you dream about. … It’s always Game 7 of the World Series.”

Kluber has struck out 15 in 12 innings during the World Series while allowing just one run in his two victories. He has repeatedly had his best stuff during the postseason despite regularly pitching on short rest and manager Terry Francona has been impressed that the 2014 American League Cy Young Award winner has remained sharp. “I wouldn’t want to do this all year, in fairness to him,” Francona told reporters at a press conference. “But I think for a couple starts, I think he can handle it just fine.”

WALK-OFFS:
1. Cubs 3B Kris Bryant went 4-for-5 in Game 6 and homered for the second straight game while 1B Anthony Rizzo also had a homer among three hits.
2. Cleveland 2B Jason Kipnis, who grew up in the Chicago area, had three hits and a homer in two of the past three games.
3. Chicago OF Kyle Schwarber will again serve as the DH and is batting .333 in the World Series despite missing the previous six-plus months due to knee surgery.

They should take a lesson from that bald douche who owns the Akron and Jacksonville franchises and change the name to something "family friendly and fun" oh, and and lucrative.

Seriously, they should go as the Cleveland Spiders, I'm sure we've discussed this before but there's historical precedent, marketing gold and PR value in doing it.

That's probably the best way to hook whatever fans are determined to hang onto a name simply because it's old and 'original' -- sell them on the idea that the one you're switching to is even older and more original!!

You mean that boring "C"?

It's as good at time as any to confess that neither Rookie of the Year nor Major League (nor its sequels) do anything for me.

I've never been big on baseball movies. The Cubs can't win tonight because
some Hollywood bozo will be on the horn trying to find someone to play Genius
Joe Maddon (sorry Tony, the torch has been passed) in 2016, The Year It Ended.

Yeah, this Spiders idea of ours isn't all that original.

Apparently some folks hate this proposal on account of the one thing they know about the Spiders of the late 19th century is the 1899 team that posted a 20-134 record. But they were at least reasonably good prior to that (they didn't just have a Cy Young pitcher after all ... they had Cy Young!!) and only crashed after the owner sold all his good players over to the St Louis team which he also owned. That act led to a ban on owners owning more than one team and also led to Cleveland being one of four franchises contracted by the NL as they headed into the new century (also Baltimore, Louisville, and Washington) leaving just the 'original eight' that most fans know.

Cleveland was then of course revived as a major league baseball town two years later by the new American League, so while there's not really a direct line from the old Spiders to the Cleveland Blues/Bronchos/Naps and, since 1915, the Indians, there is a connection between the name and the city.

8:08 first pitch
That's 7:08 Chicago time which, if translated into 24-hour/military time = 1908

Coincidence?!?!?

Of course it's a coincidence you morons!!

btw, when I'm elected king, we're all immediately moving to 24-hour time, it's so much more logical.

1-1 after 3, but the game's much closer than the score indicates.

seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" have hit into some hard outs.

And I get all this 'the game is different now' and 'it's a new generation' stuff, and when it comes to overt celebrating and the like I'm fine with all that.
But it's Game 7 of the WS, HOW THE FUCK is Fowler not running on his leadoff HR which got over the wall by like 2 feet? If that's off the wall instead of over it he's lucky to get hisself a double instead of what could quite possibly be a sure triple (or more?).

Less seriously but still odd is seeing Schwarber immediately making sure that he didn't hurt Lindor on his slide, as if that's his first thought at being thrown out on an attempted double.

Or I'm just an old man ranting.

oe: and how did the 2nd base ump mess up that earlier force play when Baez tried to bare-hand the ball??
