i like Herrera's potential upside more than Nimmo. I don't like the deal, but it might give us a little boost this year. Still, without a Lucroy deal (or similar), this is too little and too much.

Much better with Dilson but not Nimrod, I think. Dilson is a talent, but the Mets have some redundancy in middle infield prospects, and currently have three older middle infield vets under contract — and one younger one if you count Flores. This deal can help streamline the transition, and the Mets should know more than other teams about who to deal off and who to keep among Rosario, Cecchini, Herrera, Carpio, Ramos, Reynolds, Giminez, Guillorme, Guerrero, etc.

well yes, it's certainly better than Dilson AND Nimmo, and we do have more MI depth than OF depth. But i just think, based on his power/speed combo and MI glove, Herrera has a greater likelihood of developing into an all-star than Nimmo does. And i'm not in love with Bruce. He's ok as a supplementary move, not as the primary move.

We lost our only true centerfielder, and we have so many corner outfielders, we talked about moving some of them to CF and 1B. We are down a starting pitcher, and could use bullpen help.

All season long the offense has been plagued by all-or-nothing guys who strike out too much.

And so, the solution here is to take our top hitting prospect and trade for Jay Bruce?

Well, wait. The team's consensus top hitting prospect is Amed Rosario. And he's not going anywhere.

I think, within Metly circles if nothing else, and perhaps more broadly, the bloom has faded somewhat on Herrera's flower.

Sandy said the fact we have Reyes for next year was a factor, as was versatility of Flores, availability of Cecchini, Reynolds.

I wanted to see Hererra here myself but if they were truly going for it, Bruce cost them.

I got the feeling they were more down on Reynolds.

I was thinking of Dilson at 2nd and Rosario at short a few years down the line, so I can't lump them together as interchangeable pieces.

Dilson Herrera gave the Mets 0.9 fWAR.
Jay Bruce gave the Reds -0.2 fWAR.

Herrera is 22, for what it's worth. That still makes him very young, but he has regressed in his second season of AAA this year and never forced the Mets to call him up. The bigger concern is that the Reds passed on Nimmo for medical reasons. Well that, and the Mets have too many left-handed outfielders.

I never got the idea that the Mets are/were down on Herrera. You simply have to give to get and no trade is going to be pain free.

My understanding was that it was a physical question with one of the minor leaguers* who was to go with Nimmo that caused the first deal to cave in - and so when the deal was reworked it morphed into Dilson plus one minor leaguer rather than Nimmo plus two.





* specifically I believe this is the guy who we still have that we wouldn't still have if it had been Nimmo and not Dilson

That's not really what happened.

Nor do I see how it's particularly good or bad for us. Either the trade is a net win for the team or a net loss. Who wasn't traded doesn't really enter into it.

Well, if you get a cramp, don't come crying to me. The trade happened, though Bruce isn't in the lineup today. Don't know if that means he's on a plane right now or if he's sitting against the lefty.

This is puzzling, given that we deliberately traded for a 2B in the last year of his contract to make room for Herrera in 2017. Herrera wasn't having an awful year in Vegas.

If Céspedes' quad doesn't heal, the Mets aren't very good, even with Bruce. And if Céspedes' quad does heal, Bruce doesn't fill a need.
