Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 NY Mets at WashingtonWhen: 7:05 PM ET, Tuesday, May 24, 2016Where: Nationals Park, Washington, District of ColumbiaSportsDirect Inc.The New York Mets can jump into first place in the National League East with a second consecutive win over the Nationals when they visit Washington on Tuesday. The Mets entered the key three-game series 1 1/2 games out of the top spot but breezed to a 7-1 victory in Mondays series opener to tighten up the race.New York has allowed a total of eight runs during a four-game winning streak and is hoping ace Matt Harvey can keep that momentum going on the rubber as he struggles to find his form in 2016. The Mets have been able to withstand Harveys slow start thanks to efforts like Bartolo Colons seven strong innings on Monday and Yoenis Cespedes home-run barrage. Cespedes went deep in Mondays opener and has four blasts in the last eight games to boost his season total to 15 four more than Nationals superstar Bryce Harper. Harper went 0-for-4 on Monday to drop his batting average to .252 and is homerless in nine straight games with just two in May after belting nine in April.TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), MASN (Washington)PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Matt Harvey (3-6, 5.77 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (7-0, 2.80)Harvey was lit up in his last two outings and lasted only 2 2/3 innings at home against Washington on Thursday while getting dinged for nine runs six earned on eight hits and two walks. The Connecticut native surrendered three or fewer earned runs in four straight turns before falling apart in his last two starts with 19 hits allowed in 8 1/3 innings. Harvey is 3-4 with a 2.49 ERA in 11 career starts against the Nationals and has held Harper to 1-for-22.Strasburg and Cubs ace Jake Arrieta are the last two undefeated full-time starters in the NL, and Strasburg is coming off a dominating outing. The San Diego native struck out 10 and scattered one run and six hits over six innings while going up against Harvey at New York on Thursday. Strasburg, who has 75 strikeouts in 61 innings, is 5-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 10 career starts against the Mets.WALK-OFFS:1. The Mets placed 1B Lucas Duda (lower back stress fracture) on the 15-day disabled list on Monday.2. Washington 2B Daniel Murphy went 2-for-4 on Monday and is 6-for-15 in four games against his former team.3. New York SS Asdrubal Cabrera has hit safely in six straight games and drove in at least one run in each of the last three.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 So what happens if the Harvester blows up again? Everyone on the team is all happy talk right now. Wondering what Plan B is. Or maybe it's Plan V, as in Verrett.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Well, we have a thread about what happens with Harvey, but the team certainly has a healthy range of alternatives if they are really considering lifting him from the rotation: Verrett, followed by Gilmartin, foliowed by Montero, followed by Ynoa. And these are just alternatives to tide you over until Wheeler returns.Even in a pitching-rich environment, this team has some enviable depth in the starting pitching department, I tell you what.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Harvey needs to stay in the rotation no matter what happens tonight. As long as he is physically fine they have to keep throwing him out there.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 I'm feeling Harvey Day today. Big. Huge. Biggest game in the historyof Harvey Day.

If it's mid-June and his ERA is up to 8*, they'll have to look for alternatives. Nobody gets an infinite amount of rope.(*Not expecting that to happen, by the way.)
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 I dunno. Did you see Harvey's new tattoo?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Wow! It's an infinity rope, and it's his projected mid-June ERA!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 It'd be an interesting day to try de Aza at first.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Blemishing Stra$burg's record would be a desirable outcome. It would dash faith in his invincibility, and so chip away at morale.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Man, I'm really hoping Harvey blows them away tonight. I have no indication that he will do so, but I do have a bit of blind faith giving me hope tonight.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 I'd be happy even if he just gave us a workman-like effort. 5 innings, 3 runs. And then score 25 off of Strasburg.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Wow. And that team with that awful lineup won the NL pennant!
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 That lineup was 24-20 at that point.

Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 The news on Flores is that he just started that assignment. Oy. He'll be playing for those Binghampton Bums (my choice for their new name).Joins the team Friday?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Friday is the earliest he can come off the DL and it is expected that he'll be ready to go by then.So we get to muddle along with Campbell/Kelly for tonight and tomorrow, then take things from there.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 This would be a great game to win, because it seems that everything is stacked against the Mets.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Is Eric Campbell seriously hitting 6th? I am so sick of seeing this asshat. I feel like he's started more games than Cal Ripken.Terry mentioned the other day that Campbell was starting to come around with the bat as he's gotten more playing time.Really? Last 7 days: 3 for 19. All singles. .419 OPS. Season OPS: .549.This is our [u:ifnk8sbt]#6[/u:ifnk8sbt] hitter.
