"LOS ANGELES (AP) — Reigning NL batting champion Dee Gordon of the Miami Marlins was suspended 80 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, Major League Baseball said soon after he got a key hit Thursday night in a win at Dodger Stadium."

Good for the Mets, I guess, but horrible for baseball. And catastrophic for the Marlins. A young, exciting player.

Hate to have to think it but sure does explain how good he got suddenly. Also a tragedy as he grew up in baseball and probably knows how it works better than most

Way to dump a huge steaming turd on your team's best stretch of the young season as this news comes right on the heels of the Marlins' four-game sweep of the Dodgers.

That he's not a power guy and grew up both in the game and well off kills all the usual excuses about being poor and desperate and hungry, yadda yadda.
In addition to dad (and longtime pitcher) Tom, brother Nick, drafted 5th overall in June '14 and currently working his way through the Twins system (Fl St Lg), now has a guilt by association taint on his head.

News appeared to come about 1:00 in the morning which may mean that Minaya is behind it all.

Big loss.

How did I get this far into his career without knowing he was Tom Gordon's kid?

Especially considering they're practically twins.

It's just sometimes counterintuitive to think of kids descending from parents who played different positions, and I think the brain processes pitchers and hitters like cats and dogs. So unless the name gives it away (like Berra), you're not cued to guess.

I knew (thank you, Gary) he was Flash's son, but I wouldn't have guessed based on appearance, because Tom played so many years in the AL.

Seriously? How skinny was he before roids?

Put it on a bumper sticker "Small guys do it too."

Much has been made of Dee Gordon's muscle gain. Going from 145 to around 170 or more, according to Don Mattingly, who had him on both sides of his physical transformation.

If I'm MLB's drug police, I'm following Cespedes around like a shadow.

TJ Quinn reporting more suspensions are coming, apparently better testing catching more guys, or drug combos being used making detection easier.

The fact that 100 metre sprinters are fairly regularly found guilty of performance enhancing drug use should mean that we know it goes for 'speed' guys too. Tyson Gay's in the 160-170lb zone and tested positive at one point too.

I'll say this for them MLB hasn't shown fear or favour in their testing regime. It's very impressive.

My MFYF-friend is convinced that Yo is due for suspension and that
it's also going to come out that he's a number of years older than
advertised. "Only the Muts were stupid enough to take the bait on
him, no one wanted him."

Yes, he thinks calling them the Muts is still funny after forty years
but I love him anyways...

I have my suspicions about Yo. About him having a history of using, anyhow. I couldn't care less about his age.

But the Mets sticking to three years and front loading the contract gives them a degree of protection against him coming up dirty.

Of course, it also gives them a degree of exposure if he comes up simply awesome.

The Yanx have contracts on the likes of ARod, Teixeira, Ellsbury, Sabathia, & McCann until they're all old and gray (or old and even balder in McCann's case)
but the Mets are the only ones stupid enough to "take the bait" on Cespedes for one to three years?!?!?!
Ummm .... yeah, OK.
Shyeeeeet, the Yo man could be four years older than advertised and still be younger at contract's end than half the Yanqui roster.
