Cubs OF/DH/C Kyle Schwarber has been diagnosed with a torn ACL & LCL in his left knee and will miss the entire 2016 season.
He crashed into CF Dexter Fowler while chasing a fly ball in a game on Thursday night in Arizona.
Fowler was unhurt. The batter, Jean Segura, wound up with an inside the park HR.

And just as an aside here, I'd prefer to see this thread used for news of other players' injuries. If one of our guys gets a boo-boo it's certainly big enough news to get discussed on its own rather than wind up being buried in an all-purpose thread.

That guy was not meant to be an outfielder. PLay looked awful.

We saw how bad Schwarber looked in the playoffs but two of the alleged smartest people in baseball, Epstein and Maddon, put him back out there rather than be happy to have a mediocre defensive catcher who would have been the 2d best hitting catcher in the game.

I suppose the good news for the Cubs is that he didn't take Fowler to the DL with him.
Meanwhile Schwarber, who was both big enough and good enough to get a scholarship offer to Ohio State as a linebacker, probably thought he chose the sport which would preserve his knees.

This sucks. But he was such a bad outfielder. We've touched on it before. I'm really surprised they didn't find another place for him. Hope he comes back and has a nice career vs. everybody cept the Mets. I collect his baseball cards.

Not these, his real ones.

I don't know how adequate Schwarber is defensively as a catcher, but he definitely is a poor defensive outfielder. He either needs to become an adequate catcher or possibly learn to play first base, where the Cubs are pretty well set with Anthony Rizzo. If he can't find a position where he is a marginally adequate defensive player, then his future appears to be as a designated hitter in the American League.

Not.
And that's their bigger problem; he's essentially a 1B/DH on a team that already has a star 1B and in a league that only uses a DH in 10% of their games.

Meanwhile, Braves reliever Dan Winkler broke his arm throwing a pitch in Sunday's game vs StL
I remember Dave Dravecky doing that but his arm had already been weakened (and was later amputated) due to cancer.

I haven't even read this all yet. Don't sound good though.

4:31 p.m.: Terry Collins told reporters after Sunday's game he is "real concerned" that Duda will be out for a while. Dr. David Altchek will review the MRI taken Saturday on Monday.

12:05 p.m.: Terry Collins told reporters before the game Duda was seeing the doctor "even as we speak". The team is concerned Duda could have a disc issue and not a muscular one.

Tough weekend for injuries even in the non-Duda category.

- Tampa's super-CF Kevin Kiermaier has a busted hand (sliding catch), is having surgery Tuesday, and will miss 8-10 weeks

- Alex Gordon goes on KC's DL. Broken wrist, at least 3-4 weeks for a team that was struggling with him

- Texas put both Shin-Soo Choo on the DL (hammy) and Drew Stubbs on their DL
Also, and stop me if you've heard this before, Josh Hamilton is having knee surgery and will miss the entire 2016 season (he had yet to play this year)

Was it ever revealed how Duda managed to break his back?

Is Mike Barwis around?

Beat guys say Cabrera expects to be back in the lineup Friday.

Wait, tell me if you've heard this one before:

Back in the lineup Friday. Ineffective for 2 games. Late scratch on Sunday. Examined by Mets doctors Tuesday (Monday is a holiday. Altcheck throws great BBQ's according to everyone except Frank). HSS confirms that Asdrubal Cabrera is actually missing his spine.

At this point I don my Columbo trench coat and start questioning the medical staff. Something's fishy.

Ohhh, one more thing.
I think one of them is doing something to our players backs and I intend to prove it.

First Wright, then Duda, now Cabrera - they all have back problems. Maybe its just that dealing with the New York press can give you a pain in the ass?
Ohhh, one more thing.
That soap shaped like flowers in your bathroom. Can you use it, or is it just for show?
(that's a line I remember from a Columbo episode)

So the fielding crash between Gordon & 3B Mike Moustakas which broke Gordon's wrist has now claimed another victim.
Moustakas, who was previously thought to have just a sore knee, in fact has a torn ACL and will likely miss the remainder of the season.
THAT was one costly foul ball (especially since the crash knocked the ball loose and they didn't even get the out).

I've been watching some old Columbo's on meTV. I might watch one a week. It depends on who the guest bad person is. One was on the other night that was a gem of an episode. Ruth Gordon was a writer/MURDERER and she and Columbo played cat n mouse.

I also recently saw one I never saw before and it was most interesting because the murderer was from another country and had diplomatic immunity. I don't know if Columbo ever did this before or after, but like 15 minutes into the episode he told his commanding officer that he was convinced the diplomat was the murderer and he would prove it (he was being taken off the case at the time). To the best of my recollection he always held all his cards close to his vest until the end when he turned the tables on the criminal. We knew that he knew but I don't recall him ever coming right out and saying it early in the episode. In the 3rd or 4th act he actually told the murderer himself that he knew he did it and although he knew he couldn't arrest him, he was going to find the evidence. I won't say how it turned out because you should try to see that episode if you haven't. It was really good.

There's actually a statue of Columbo and his dog in Budapest, Hungary.

Shit, Nats just took a 2-1 lead over Wash in the 7th.

Puts me in mind of the Wright/Davis collision, a seemingly mild crash that ended up costing the team months of both of them.

From one perspective neither was ever the same either.

Sounds like Wright will decide later this week whether to get neck surgery.

I kinda hopes he opts for surgery. Not that I want him to be out, but it would at least give the team a definite answer as to their needs for the rest of the year rather than spending the summer with questions on if and when he will be available.
