The funny thing is we've transitioned pretty smoothly over the Steiny years from Guidry to Mattingly to Jeter. Who will take up the banner to represent all that is Yankees about the Yankees? Gardner? Tanaka? I imagine Yankee fans aren't feeling it.

There's a feeling out there that MLB has spent so long proclaiming Jeter the one pure lamb in a forest of evil wolves that the whole sport is primed for a post-Jeter letdown.

I'm not ready to buy it, but...

Yankees missing the postseason two years in row minus Jeter plus a young, exciting Mets team plus Matt Harvey = ???

I am intrigued. Buy us a shortstop (Hanley?) and an outfielder (the Cuban kid?), Sandy, and let's win this city back.

Also, better ballpark.

Don't worry, I'm sure the Mets and/or Adam Rubin will beat the interesting out of Harvey soon enough.

The national media is certainly buying it. They already think that baseball is virtually dead and that Jeter is its sole remaining attribute.

From a strictly MFY POV, the dirty little secret in the Bronx is that they packed the house MUCH more in the ARod years then they ever did before or since. Only those "loser" teams from the first decade this century drew 4+ million (2005-2008 - a span which included ARod's two MVP years) far outdrawing those 'beloved' 1990s squads which averaged in the high-twos (96-98) to low threes beginning in '99. From ARod's arrival until his downfall they never drew under 3.7

They averaged 4400 more fans a game the year they signed A-Rod.

~330,000 more fans, which at even $20 a ticket is $7 million not factoring in other ancillary income.

Flipping around I saw a stat that he had been 0 for his last 23 (or something like that).

Last two weeks? I think they have this wrong. I think he retired two weeks ago...

Only has bat.

Adam Wainwright has got to get on the league to his AL colleagues and remind them of their obligation to groove Jeter his pitches.

Unless they are grooving, and he's still not catching up.

But during that time, he has continued to make the players around him better.

Well, the other players certainly LOOK better by comparison.

In yesterday's Times, they ran an article claiming that Jeter, if he returned next year, certainly would be completely unable to play shortstop because of his minuscule range and weak throwing arm, but is doing a fine job through the end of this season.

Do these people know how to recognize the sound of their lips kissing Jeter's ass? It's unmistakeable.

Early in the year, maybe even during the spring training, a high school classmate posted the following, "Jeter is irreplaceable but thank God he's retiring."

OK.

It's kinda true though, no? Did Captain Intangibles start
as a joke making fun of him, or was it a serious thing that
fans started calling him because they couldn't quite say why
he or how he was so great?

No, I'm sure it started as mockery, when you couldn't talk to a Yankee fan without being berated for failing to grasp the "intangible" qualities that Jeter has that can never be quantified, put down on paper, show up in the boxscore, be adequately described, etc. He's just great, whatever the stupid stats show, or your own lying eyes, for that matter. The other fact, that they refer to him as "The Captain," like being the captain of a baseball team is some kind of quasi-military honor, got combined into the derisive nickname "Captain Intangibles." I don't think Yankee fans, other than the most deluded, which is 75% of them, use it seriously.

That's a clown comment, bro.

Holy crap, there's a 90 second Gatorade commercial where Jeter, in part, cavorts with regular people, as we hear Frank sing "My Way." At the end, he tips his cap at NMFYS. I didn't watch the whole thing because I couldn't. I won't link to it on principle.

Have you noticed how all of the most promoted Jeter moments this year have all been about advertising and selling things?

But all of it is against his will.

Considering how much Jetes hates all this publicity and fuss surrounding his farewell tour (I know he does cuz Michael Kay et al keep telling me so) it was really low of Gatorade to stalk him with those cameras like that (do you suppose he saw them?) and at the same time very fortunate for them that Derek just happened to keep walking past their logos at every turn.

Minor accomplishment that I haven't gotten in any online arguments regarding that damn commercial.

Me too. Except for the friends I have here, everyone else
is a Yankee fan. Some of them are too much, calling it the
classiest commercial ever made.

I loved it. But I don't really know who this "Jeter" guy is. I hope that, like most unlikely visitors to the Bronx, he gets shivved in the heart with a sharpened fast foot utensil.
