Matt Harvey envies Derek Jeter � especially when it comes to the ladies. The Mets pitching phenom told Men�s Journal that he wants the kind of love life Jeter has had for years in New York City, complete with the gorgeous celebrities and uncanny privacy. "That guy is the model," Harvey said. "I mean, first off, let's just look at the women he's dated. Obviously, he goes out � he's meeting these girls somewhere � but you never hear about it. That's where I want to be." Harvey isn't doing too badly in that department -- he's currently dating Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Anne Vyalitsyna. Though he hasn't exactly kept things as quiet as Jeter with Anne V joining Harvey on his All-Star Parade on Tuesday. Also, Jeter never posed nude for ESPN's "Body Issue," like the Mets ace did. Harvey, who lives in the East Village, is enjoying the Manhattan lifestyle with plenty of fancy restaurants, clubs, bars and parties. The 24-year-old does say he doesn�t drink 48 hours before a start. �But those other days? Yes, I'm gonna go out,� he said. �If I was locked up in my house all week, I don't know what I'd be like on the baseball field." In his younger days: Derek Jeter and ex-girlfriend, actress Jordana Brewster in 2002 at a Nets game. Harvey, originally from Connecticut, is still on his rookie contract, but he�s likely to sign a lucrative extension with the Mets some time soon. The team would be crazy to let go of the fireballing right-hander, who started Tuesday night�s All-Star Game at Citi Field and threw 2 1/3 shutout innings. "No matter what, New York is now my home," he says, finishing the night's last drink. "I could buy a place now, but I've gotta wait for that $200 million contract. If I'm going to buy an apartment, it has to be the best apartment in the city." That competitiveness certainly extends off the field. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Harvey has befriended Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, noted for his stylish clothing, and high-end John Varvatos has become one of Harvey�s favorite stores. "He always makes the best-dressed lists," Harvey said of Lundqvist. "Well, I want to be on those lists." The list of baseball�s best pitchers is not enough. Along with Rangers like Lundqvist and Brian Boyle, Harvey hangs out in the city with finance and marketing 20-somethings. "Baseball is my job, and I love it," Harvey said. "But it can't be the only thing I've got going on."

I mean, Jeter's a douche too, and that's fine, I suspect Harvey will be a little classier than having his friends sneak him girls up to his place and then give them gift baskets for their trouble.

Yeah, I've thought that more than once.

The only real difference is that I didn't realize what a douche that Seaver could be until recent years. When I was a kid I loved him unconditionally.

Really, don't fear the crash. It's going to happen if it isn't happening already. The team's job isn't to wrap him in bubble wrap, but to back him up with his much quality as they can roll out. That was the answer for Seaver, and it was the answer for Gooden, both of whom fell to earth in their day )if only for parts of '72 and a chunk of '74.

Well, I'd imagine most top of the line jocks at least slant towards egotistical douche, so.. In fact it's often the guys that seem gentle and quiet that don't fit in.

The biggest difference between Seaver's douchiness, and Harvey's, other than 300+ wins, is Nancy.

Jeter is a first-ballot Hall of Famer with a handful of rings, played his whole career for one team, and has managed to avoid controversy his entire career despite living in NY. Let's face it, young players should be modeling themselves after him.

From many different reports, he is great with charity work, especially kids in the hospital where he really puts in the extra effort. He was also really cool to my son when we met him in person.

My biggest complaint about him isn't even really his fault. It's that he's incredibly overrated by the fans, the media, etc. He's gotten himself to the point where if he strikes out, he's applauded for not hitting into a double play. Even when leading off an inning.

Let's hope that Harvey follows this model. Plays his whole career with the Mets, wins a slew of rings, bangs a bunch of models, then gives a really douchy Hall of Fame induction speech.

Well, media perception shapes things, and being swept up in a winner helps. Even the first-ballot thing is subjective and media/writer driven. Piazza's a first-ballot HOFer but played in the steroid era. Why should it be different for Jeter or Rivera? But there are plenty of things to make controversy on if they felt like it. Whether it's gift baskets or tax evasion or how he's shirks the media when he can get away with it, stubbornly insists on where he hits in the lineup and that he can still play SS (contrast with a guy like Beltran who not only offers to move, helps his replacement in the process) and didn't come across as rosy in contract negotiations and is at least partially responsible for the treatment A-Rod gets.

The best thing an athlete can do is not be ashamed to be himself, whoever that is. The media will do what they want, but be honest with yourself and your team and it won't manifest into trouble. *shrug* guess that's good advice overall though.
