2013 IPP: Jose Reyes & RA Dickey

Not sure if ex-Mets are allowed in the IPP's (actually not even 100% sure what IPP stands for) but what the hey...

Last 2 season average stats for Reyes and Dickey:

Reyes: 94 runs; 34 doubles; 14 triples; 9 HRs; 50 RBI; 40 steals; 53 walks; 48 strikeouts; .310/.368/.461/.824;

Dickey: 14 wins; 10 losses; 2.99 ERA; 221 innings; 3 Complete Games; 182 Strikeouts; 54 walks; 21 HRs; 1.135 WHIP;

Also of note: The Blue Jays have 3 former Mets catchers in camp with experience of getting Dickey with it (Thole, Henry Blanco, and Mike Nickeaus)...Which one will be dubbed "Dickey's Personal Catcher"?

Predictions for 2013?

I'm stuck in AL East viewing territory up here in northern New England...so I'm looking forward to having a reason to watch 18 NESN telecasts this season (Red Sox flagship station)...Reyes is my favorite active MLB player that has been associated with the Mets at one time; and how can you not appreciate RA?

I'm predicting a "career" year for Reyes in Extra Base Hits and RBI:
25 doubles; 20 triples; 20 Homeruns; 80 RBI; 120 Runs Scored; 30 steals; .300 average; .850+ OPS;

I think that RA is going to struggle a little pitching in the AL East, and pitching in a ballpark that is a little more conducive to the long ball:
3.5 ERA; 28 HRs; 18 wins;

I also think that Henry Blanco will be Dickey's "Personal catcher" to start the season at least; with Josh Thole going down to AAA to get re-educated with his offense/defense (he'll need to be more than just a knuckleball catcher to survive in the AL East as a backup catcher)...

By the way...watching today's Blue Jays vs Phillies game on MLB Network right now on the DVR (Mets game was on, followed by the BJ's game)...

Dickey started, and got rocked in the 1st inning (double, double, HR and then single) but then settled down...

Reyes had a 3 for 3 game:
double (Right Handed vs Cliff Lee);
single (RH'd vs Lee);
3 Run Homerun (LH'd) that he absolutely crushed (Ike Davis type of HR that the RFer didn't even move for off the bat, other than to turn and watch it sail 50+ feet past the fence);
7 "Total Bases"; 3 RBI; 2 runs scored...He's used to hitting after a pitcher, this season he gets to hit leadoff after Emilio Bonifacio (who has had 70 steals in under 800 at bats the past 2 seasons); so he should be seeing a good amount of RBI situations...

I'd bet 16 wins for Dickey easily, since the AL hasn't seen the perfected knuckleball. And Reyes will have a great year because he'll be pissed. .300 with 50 steals and 110 runs scored.

I think Dickey will have a very good year. Probably not a Cy Young, but the Jays and their fans will be glad to have him.

It's possible Jose gets his old-guy skills working --- hits the ball harder while losing a step or two.

Those "career" extra-base numbers above wouldn't really be career numbers, as the doubles are relative low.

But yeah, put me down for Jose the extra base threat.

Dickey could go bad at any time, I guess.

maybe misguided, misinformed, misdiagnosed...but I don't ever remember unmotivated...

I'm really surprised that with Reyes injury history (particularly after playing in the 2009 WBC, and after the Mets moved him to 2nd) that the BJ's are allowing him to play in the WBC again...usually if Reyes stays in his routines, he's healthy; but that isn't usually the case when he breaks his usual routine...

Catcher J.P. Arencibia, who is joining Jays ace R.A. Dickey on Team USA, will at least get to spend more time harnessing Dickey�s fluttering knuckler. The batterymates are expected to work together in Dickey�s starts.

It will be interesting to see how other countries' players fair against Dickey's hard knuckler...

I'd guess that both Reyes and Dickey will continue to shine in 2013. Dickey will probably pitch more than half of his games in a domed, and thus weather-controlled, stadium (Blue Jays, Astros, Mariners, and whatever NL domes Dickey pitches in in interleague play).

There's no statistical connection with the WBC and injuries even though there are enough people who want to see one.
The fact is injuries occur all the time* during March but it seems that only those which occur away from a team training camp get the cause and effect label.



* Just this week in Met camp we saw Wheeler, Nieuwenhuis & Santana.
Also Raffy Furcal is having elbow issues; Matt Garza is being shut down until at least May; Carl Crawford is on the shelf; Phil Hughes has back problems; and those are just the ones I know off the top of my head. I'm sure there are two or three in every camp.

FieldTurf doesn't seem to impact wear-and-tear injury incidence either way, though recent studies seem to indicate that in-game impact/evasion injuries seem to occur at a higher rate with NFL players.

Dickey will be very, very good. When he gets hammered-- which will be rare-- he may get hammered a little more heavily. I'll go:

210 IP, 3.10 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 179 K, 7.7 K/9, 2.3 BB/9, 18 wins, top-10 CY finish

If we're talking about Reyes' old-guy skills, hell: his baserunning's remained just as efficient as ever (80% steal rate) even as his steal numbers decline; his walk rate continues to trend upward while his K-rate drops (more BB than K in each of the last two seasons). Outside of more mash, he's GOT or is developing a whole lot of old-guy skills already. Gimme:

673 PA, .294/.356/.459, 108 R, 12 HR, 64 RBI, 64 XBH and a LOT of happy, dancing Canucks.

Hey, I heard about a guy who got hurt just reading about the WBC!

And on that note, Rangers' one-time top prospect turned reliever turned starter Martin Perez: out two months with a broken forearm sustained during a standard ST game -- showing once again that NOT going to the WBC doesn't mean you just sit around and do needlepoint all day. This all brings to mind the old thread where Ms. Met wanted to do away with interleague play on account of her claim that it caused Al Leiter to be injured.

Perez had been penciled in as Texas's 5th starter this season but this now could mean that Kyle Lohse, still unemployed as I type, might actually get a call.




As far as Reyes & Dickey go -- when RA gets the win and Jose drives in the winning run during the game in September which eliminates the Yanx from playoff contention it'll all be worth it no matter what their season-long numbers are.

I think the former scenario would have him getting killed more. I'm not sure why I think that exactly. Something to do with the apparent folly being in plain sight, I guess.

that's why I never understood a speedster sliding into a base instead of the head first dive...I'd rather screw up a finger for a couple of days than an ankle/knee for an extended amount of time...

There are plusses and minuses either way. Legs, for instance, are much better able to defend themselves than arms. They're stronger and they're weaponized. You can also apply more drag going in feet first to control your slide and keep from oversliding. Furthemore, a feet first slide allows you to reach back if you slide past the bag to avoid a tag.
