HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 why can't baseball just say it is because of a contractual obligation to New Era? If it is true, say it! Saying nothing makes them look worse, imo.
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 Because New Era probably never have backed up MLB on it. If they get blamed for this, it hurts sales. If it were up to New Era, they'd say, "Sure," and figure out how to sell NYPD caps with Mets logos.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 Adam Rubin has friends at MLB? Has he lobbied them for a hat-confiscating job?And while we're on the subject, "Joe Torre, Fucking Shitbag" may be my favorite thread title ever.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 So now nobody took the fucking hats away? Someone, anyone, needs to stand in front of a microphone and say, "You know what? We totally fucked up the hat thing, and we're sorry."

It's one thing if you want to comment on something they say, but some people out there just retweet the beat guys blindly. It's not like they're secret accounts, if I wanted to hear what they had to say I'd already be following them. Although it does affirm my thoughts that I can get all the info that's important from Rubin without having to deal with as much of his negative spin.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 "Joe Torre, Fucking Shitbag" - he should have that printed up as his business card. and it should definitely go on his HOF plaque, should he ever get one. he doesn't already have one, does he?
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 I will forever think of him as "Joe Torre, Fucking Shitbag" now.

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2011 Author Posted September 13, 2011 Selig purportedly outraged that the Mets would throw MLB under the bus by divulging that the denial came from his office. Sources are a bit sketchy, and it's the Post, but it would not surprise me that Selig acted in a self-serving way without intending to be held accountable for it.Story here:http://newyorkpost.com/p/sports/mets/bud_isn_fine_FskZt4hgbiWvBVQwQr3G4MSome more good quotes from JTFS:"Nothing was ordered."Wait, what? What about unanimity? Are you saying MLB didn't actually deny the request?"I think they were sent a memo, but in no way was it heavy-handed."You think? Isn't that something you should, you know, know?"I don't think money was ever an issue or they were ever threatened with a heavy-fisted fine."Translation: "I don't really know if we gave an order. If we did, we certainly didn't intend to enforce it. I don't see how this is our fault.""If that's the case, I have no knowledge of it."Translation: "I'm not here to talk about the past."
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 "If that's the case, I have no knowledge of it."Joe Torre for president.Really, if you came down on them, it doesn't matter that much how hard you brought it. You're on the wrong side of history.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Those quotes make it seem like Joe has no idea what's going on, and was just thrown in there last minute to be the 'face' of it. The memo was supposedly sent out before the season, with some sort of followup more recently once they got wind of the Mets supposed plans. Of course, you'd think someone would've come up with this memo by now too.. These types of things are usually posted in the clubhouses all year I think, alongside the memo not to fraternize with opposing players.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 "Nothing was ordered."Wait, what? What about unanimity? Are you saying MLB didn't actually deny the request?Major Strasser: "Mr Lazlo we should discuss your presence here in Casablanca in the office of the prefect of police, say tomorrow morning at 10 AM"Victor Lazlo: "Captain Renault, I am under your authority here in Casablanca, is it your order that I appear tomorrow?"Captain Renault: "Let's just say that it is my request, that's a much nicer way to put it"Look folks, as much fun as it is to lump this all on Torre I think it's pretty clear that he's being used here as the pr guy. Selig's office probably said to itself; "Hey, we really suck at pr, but we also got Torre here on the payroll and he's from New York and everyone there likes him, so if anyone can smooth this mess over it'll be old Joe".So then Joe gets told what to say and when the fan unexpectedly spits most of the shit back at him he's stumbling around like Ralph Kramden going; "hummina, hummina" because he was never in on the decision in the first place which involves whatever marketing deal they struck with the cap company and their third-world factory.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2011 Author Posted September 13, 2011 They're still his words. That makes him a shitbag. He doesn't need the job, he doesn't need the money. If he's being asked to endorse something his heart isn't into, he can always decline. I doubt if Selig came to him and asked him to endorse "separate but equal" locker rooms he'd be on board.Perhaps it's unfair, but I feel like Torre supports this decision. When he was asked why the Yankees didn't wear the hats after 9/11, he spouted something about the brand being too important, bla bla bla. I think he was always hoping it would go away. Now it's a bigger issue than ever.

It is the same kind of thinking that gave us a Brooklyn rotunda in the Mets ballpark. But that doesn't mean that Torre didn't relish the chance to stick it to the Mets, who once fired him.Yankee pinstripes don't fade easily. He's still JT,FS in my book.Later
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 I think Torre is OK. He comes off as a bad guy here, but we know he's a politician and an ambassador, it;'s the kind of thing you'd expect to hear from any shill in his position. And he might not get it, but I do not believe he relishes sticking it to the Mets who gave him a start to a managing career that will get him into the HoF.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 There was no way the Mets were gonna defy Selig and MLB. Only over Fred and Jeff's dead bodies. Or the dead bodies of Fred and Jeff's hat-taking-away goons. This way, the Wilpons continue to play nicey-nicey with Selig and in return, Selig might lend the team some more money.

He established himself as an All-Star in Milwaukee/Atlanta, won an MVP in St. Louis and ringed himself with the MFYs. With the Mets he was over the hill and managed in the nether regions of the N.L. East.Doing some long-distance psychoanalyzing here, but I don't think Torre's particularly sentimentally attached to his Mets tenure.
