Now!!!!

Ok, maybe not now. But as soon as that 10 day window is up.

Re-sign Beltran, re-sign Jose. Get Santana and Ike healthy, get a few low-risk, high reward-type bullpen guys and I'm ready to roll for 2012.

1. Reyes SS
2. Murphy/Turner 2B
3. Wright 3B
4. Beltran RF
5. Davis 1B
6. Bay/Duda LF (would love to dump Bay, but I don't see it happening)
7. Pagan CF
8. Paulino/Thole C

Rotation:
Santana
Niese
Gee
Dickey
Pelfrey/Capuano/Mejia/Harvey

I can get behind this. With the season he's putting up, I would love to see a two-year deal offered by the Mets for about $8M per with some incentives and possibly an option based on games played.

I think he might get a longer term deal from an AL team, but I think Carlos really wants to play the field.

That contract sounds fair, but it might not be enough.

interesting. minus santana, we had the same roster coming into 2011, but there was a lot less enthusiasm behind it.

is Santana the difference maker? would we have been in the thick of things if we had santana all of 11?

agreed. i think it takes 10-12 mil a year at least.
that and another big signing... he wants a ring. if he doesn't get one this year, i think we need to resign reyes (obviously) and sign another top of the rotation starter (and maybe keep izzy another year) to convince beltran that we have a shot at dethroning the phillies.

I think Santana coupled with a full year of Wright and Davis would have put us right around where ATL is. Prolly not enough to catch Philly.

All depends on health and depth.

And Bay.

I woukd like two more years of Beltran , I have basically given up on Bay, he is not to be counted on for anything, major salary eating coming with him.

I can't see how this depends on Bay. We're a team in NY. Having cash to spend should be our advantage. Bay sucks? Oh well, that's $16M down the drain but shouldn't affect our other free agent signings.

It affects our needs. if he's mashing, the offense is definitely fine, and may not be 'worth' signing Beltran.

You could say a lot of _this_ season still depends on Bay.

Beltran will be 35 in April, at the start of next season. He's got like no cartilage in his knee. Alderson isn't going to re-sign him. Move on.
S'long Carlos, and thanks for all the fish.

Seriously? It's been a year and half already. Wake me up when Bay's "mashing" starts.

Carlos has left the building, for good.

I'm more concerned in Ike Davis returning healthy for 2012 than most other Metly issues.

well about 1 season of 'games'.

I wasn't saying I expected it, merely that it would mitigate offensive concerns.

I could see Bay having a 'not terrible' year next two, but mashing is starting to seem like a lost cause.

the Mets should run a promotion to pay off Bay's contract, where at each home game, fans can pay 5$ to come out of the stands and strike out Bay. They'd make enough to buy him out by the end of the year.

Cerrone states on his blog today that Boras "will be seeking a five-year, $70 million deal this winter" for Beltran.

HAHAAAHHAAHAAAHAA! I love you Carlos, but c'mon.

Good luck with that, so if that is a starting point he might well be looking for three years and $45 million . No thanks.

good thing it's not omar in charge, because he'd end up bidding against himself and tack on 2 more years, and a few more million dollars while he's at it.

Man, never sell Boras short.

True, starting points with Boras often go up and not down. His current team are pretty good at giving out bloated contracts to older players.

I wouldn't go that far. Take Johnny Damon (probably not an unreasonable comparison either) after the '09 season. Was asking for the moon ended up with like 2/12 or something.

edit: supposed the Yankees offered 2/12. He was hodling out for like 3/30 + or some such. signed for 1/8.

Boras can seek anything he wants but he can't make it happen unless some GM/owner agrees to his figures - and if/when that happens then his numbers were the 'correct' figures all along.

But, yeah, lots of the stuff he 'floats' out there don't ever happen, some never even come close.

And really, as his agent, that's what he's supposed to say. "My client? Totally washed up. He'll take a minor-league deal; doesn't even need an invitation to camp."

I'd like him at 2/16-20.

I don't think it works out that way.

Yep, same thing I thought. Two year deal at 7-8 mil per. But he'll be looking for [crossout]Jeter[/crossout] stupid overpaid old guy money.

Exactly.

And either someone overpays him for an Ibanez-y 3-year deal (say, a still-high-on-WS-champagne Sabean?), or I kinda see it going down in Damon-like fashion. Either way, it won't be Alderson, I don't think.

Sure. I'm talking more on emotion than any sense of logic, but we need a middle of the order guy (or two) next year. And none of the names I've heard as being available seem like great fits to me. (Sure, there's that poo-hole guy, but I don't think we can afford him.) What other relatively cost-effective guys are out there that you can slot in at #3 in the lineup.

Besides, we all say Sandy won't do it, but a two-year incentive laden deal to a bounceback guy sounds like an Alderson-type deal. I have a hard time thinking anyone would be insane enough to give him three years or more.

And before any deal is offered, he should be thoroughly examined by the doctor out in Colorado.

Not the one who examined Ike.
