Derek Lowe busted for DUI

The Braves on Friday issued this statement on the DUI arrest of starting pitcher Derek Lowe:

"Obviously we are concerned and disappointed about the events involving Derek Lowe overnight. We are currently gathering information and plan to address this matter later today."

Lowe, 37, was arrested overnight for driving under the influence, and was taken to the Atlanta city jail. Cbsatlanta.com posted a video of Lowe leaving the jail early this morning after he bonded out.

Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright told the AJC that Lowe was stopped around 10 p.m. on Peachtree Road at Rumson Road.

The trooper "detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" and gave Lowe a field sobriety test, Wright said. Lowe refused to take a state-administered alcohol test, he said.

Wright said Lowe, who was driving a 2011 Porsche Panamera, was also charged with reckless driving and making an improper lane change.

Lowe's got quite the drunken-lummox history from the Boston days (I've seen a few friend-of-friends bar photos with him).

A 4-door Porsche? That looks kinda stupid.

Not as stupid as Lowe looks, of course.

Do not be fooled - it's a sweet ride.

This is kind of unfair. He wasn't driving recklessly, really... so much as he was drag racing while drunk.

Lowe's a complete douchebag.

Looks kinda drunk even in his wedding picture.

Mmmm.... the glorious results of a torrid double-home-plus-career-wrecking affair. Which lens most perfectly captures that sort of occasion?

Out of 40 photos on that site, his face appears in maybe four, and always obstructed (or cropped, as below).

Mmm, classy tatt, baby.

A monogrammed ice bar! What better symbol of a major league pitcher's affections --- loaded with booze, doomed to melt, and transparent to all.

Dude went with the scruffy half-beard for his wedding?

Good Lord, man, this isn't your frat formal mixer.

I get the idea his life resembles an extended frat mixer.

#winning!

Shin-Shoo Choo also busted for DUI. He blew a .201!!!

Otherwise known as "Pottery Red" on your Behr color wheel.

Athletes don't get the villification they deserve there because most of the people who like moralizing about this sort of stuff have probably blown a .15 or two in their time; sadly, it's a little more identifiable a transgression, I think, than getting into a do-you-know-who-I-am club confrontation or committing a bathroom sexual assault.

I know the answer to this one. Mandatory 50 game suspension.

Since the facts aren't official until the guy faces a judge months or maybe more after the act, and we demand swifter justice in the baseball world, cut it to 30 if he pleads no contest to the league.

I can't imagine that a defense lawyer would allow a client to plead "no contest" to anyone other than the judge presiding over the case, but I like the 50 game suspension upon conviction idea. Any one of these guys is a Leyritz waiting to happen.

Well, the key to "no contest" is that it isn't an admission of guilt, so it would be submitted with the understanding that it wouldn't be admissable in as evidence against a guy in a criminal proceeding. If that doesn't work, it doesn't work, but the idea is to get a meaningfully timely hunk o' justice.

Derek Lowe, SP ATL
News: Citing a lack of evidence, DUI and reckless driving charges were dismissed against Atlanta SP Derek Lowe on Thursday. One of Lowe's attorneys, Cory Yager, said Thursday that solicitor Raines Carter, the chief prosecutor in Atlanta Municipal Court, agreed to dismiss the charges. Yager says police video following the April 28 arrest showed Lowe "did remarkably well" in his field sobriety tests after declining a breath test. The reckless driving charge, which stemmed from an allegation Lowe was racing, "was absolutely unfounded."

Oh well, I guess he played the "I'm rich, famous, and white in Georgia" card.
