Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 There's a belief that I find fairly common among a number of fans & media that it's harder - for either team - to sweep a DH than it is for one team to take two games that are played on consecutive days.Mike & Mad Dog were big on this one - often stating it as an uncontested fact - until finally someone got a hold of the stats and showed them that splits and sweeps are statistically virtually exactly where they should be: about a 50/50 deal.IOW, if you've got about a .500 team over a stretch of years you should expect to sweep approx 25% of the DHs, get swept in about 25%, and split the remaining 50%Those Met stats above show them sweeping just over 20%, getting swept about 1/3 of the time, and splitting a bit under half. Not too surprising, especially since this is not a .500 team in their history and that DHs were much more common in the early days of the team when .350-.400 winning pcts were common.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I found this feature the other day. I put it together last winter, but apparently forgot about it until this week. I intend to add it to the UMDB, but for now I'll sneak preview it here:Does it appear to be self-explanatory? Or does it make you think, "huh?"
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 It's like Met chromatography.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 It does look like an abacus, doesn't it? I was thinking the same thing!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I think the difference between three or four at-bats isn't really very meaningful (or, really, decipherable) to somebody who'd read this chart. I'd propose a two-tone system --- a dark color for starts and a lighter shade for appearances off the bench.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I think I like that idea. When I get a chance, I'll give it a try.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 Not a frequent year for Maz?
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I was disappointed to open this thread and see it had nothing to do with rum-based cocktails. Then I was chagrined to be reminded that I was the one responsible for this thread getting that name.I suck.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Brooks played all of July. Therefore, each bead corresponds to a Met game, rather than a Met game coupled with the game's calendar date. Otherwise, the July All-Star break would create a gap in every player's July. I like it.You'd need to look at both charts to determine that a particular Met is in solely for defense.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 How do you like that one August 1 start for Rusty Staub?

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Yes, that's true. Each bead represents a game, strung along from 1 to 162. I then draw the vertical lines through the first game played in each month.Turns out kind of funky when applied to 1981:
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Can you click on a bead to link to the box score for the game represented by that bead? Also, I'd like it if the months were written on the bottom of the charts, as well.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 batmagadanleadoff wrote:Can you click on a bead to link to the box score for the game represented by that bead? That would be cool! You can't currently do that, but I think it might be possible. If the thought festers in my brain for a while I might give it a shot.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Look at Flynn81. How lucky was Doug Flynn to be traded to the worst team in baseball? Otherwise, he's selling insurance before Jimmy Carter's out.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Okay, thanks for the feedback! It's live for the world to see:http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/metannual.php?ThisYear=2010&tabno=C
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 I feel like I've been invited to a movie premiere!Shouldn't that chart read Frequency by games played instead of "started"?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 This is something else I've been playing with. A long way from where I want it to go, but it looks pretty good at a glance:
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 I like it, but authentic filled scorecards would be a billion times cooler.(wheels turning)The Great Mets Scorecard Project would be a really cool thing to do.

Also agree that JCL's project would be bigger & crazier & cooler (in a diff way).
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 I'll continue refining the scorecard as time permits. I'd like to get it to a point where you see the players' progress around the bases. And I want to add the totals at the ends of the rows and the bottoms of the columns, and the pitching lines too.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 It's like Charles in Charge said of the little sister of the family. It's beautiful for what it is, and what it's destined to become.
