Ten Cranebucks say the autopsy shows residual Hanley Ramirez DNA.

I'd agree. For a guy who has managed a team of youngsters to a 3 games under .500 record over 3 and a half years, it sounds like he is getting the shaft.

Here's hoping the Orioles get off the pot and hire Valentine before the Fish do.

Yup on the O's. They are playing .270 baseball, something needs to be done.

I never had any real thoughts on Fredi Gonzalez good or bad, I guess he wasn't about to turn into the next Bobby Cox.

Except of course, for the rumors that he will be the replacement to Bobby Cox. ;-)

Until next year, anyways. Speculation I've seen is that he is a candidate to replace Cox at the helm of the Bravos.

Lil' Joe Girardi was treated similarly following more onfield success (AND wearing down his rotation/pen with Torre-esque staffing patterns).

Perhaps Fredi was a little short with, say, Loria's Labrador or something.

I have no idea who Edwin Robinson is ... but here's to him anyway.

Three-time Pulitzer winner. Wrote the poem that Paul Simon adapted as "Richard Cory."

Speculation has the O's going for Buck Showalter. Gonzalez was a Cox disciple, no? With Ned Yost snatched up by KC, that's one logical replacement that ATL lost-- perhaps Fredi lands on his feet with the Braves? Would be good to see him there, shafting the Marlins 18 times per year.

Loria is fast becoming Steinbrenner South. I find him insufferable.

CSI-Miami couldn't comment on it until David Caruso took off his sunglasses.

It looks like the Marlin's manager's last name is Rodriguez, not Robinson:

ESPN wrote:
The Florida Marlins have fired manager Fredi Gonzalez, bench coach Carlos Tosca and hitting coach Jim Presley, the team said Wednesday.

The team said Edwin Rodriguez had been named interim manager, with Brandon Hyde and John Mallee the interim bench and hitting coaches, respectively.

The Palm Beach Post first reported the firing.

Rodriguez has been managing the Marlins' AAA affiliate in New Orleans since the beginning of last year.

Can you imagine a more going-nowhere job than "interim bench coach"?

Kinda like watching your ex date, isn't it?

Only your marriage isn't what it used to be, and though things are relatively sunny right now, you find yourself constantly wondering whether you're with the wrong person.

Gonzalez was a dismal manager. The Marlins should have been taking a big step forward this year and Fredi was no help whatsoever motivationally (losing Hanley, though he seems to want to be lost) or strategically. Recall the way he managed against the Mets on the final Sunday of our last series with them, plucking Nolasco with a four-run lead in the sixth and 82 pitches pitched and playing for a DP in the eighth with the go-ahead run on third and nobody out. Gonzalez got his double play and the Mets got their winning run.

Other than the owner's capriciousness, I never understood why Girardi was fired down there. He's the one who did the sensational job with an undermanned team in 2006. He was MFY mgr in waiting, I suppose, but he should have been given a chance in Florida to continue what he started. They would have taken more games seriously than just the final game at Shea every year.

Wow, I hate the Marlins.

This from Heyman, a few days ago. Ex-Mets managers of all vintage are in rumored favor in Baltimore.

In contrast to their roster of mostly underachieving kids, the Orioles have assembled a list of experienced, accomplished managers as prime candidates to replace the recently fired Dave Trembley for what might be the hardest job in sports, what one baseball executive called a "hell". Internally, even Davey Johnson has been mentioned along with other fellow ex-managers Bobby Valentine, Buck Showalter, Bob Melvin and Eric Wedge.

Johnson, who took the Orioles to the playoffs in 1996 and '97 but hasn't managed in the majors since 2000, is surely the most intriguing new name of the group. But Melvin, who managed the Diamondbacks, Showalter (Yankees, D-backs and Rangers), and Wedge (Indians) are all more likely to accept an offer. Melvin is said to have a positive connection to Orioles owner Peter Angelos from Melvin's playing days in Baltimore from 1989-91. Johnson and the more sought-after Valentine, who managed the Rangers and Mets before going on to a successful stint in Japan, would seem to be long shots to join the Orioles.

No chance in hell on Johnson, I assume, given his history with Angelos, his long time out of big league dugouts and the fact that he's not an easily harassed hack. But when I first heard it, I shuddered for the simple reason I don't want him to miss his induction into our Hall of Fame on August 1. But if Jack McKeon could resurface twice in his latter years, guiding the Reds to a one-game playoff and the Marlins to a world championship, I suppose it's not out of the question that Davey's ML career might have another go.

I take it the Orioles have been impressed with Mets managers dating back to the one who masterminded their defeat in October 1969.

Oh, totally.

And now today, reading that Bobby V. has been or is going to be contacted for the Marlins job has me hand-wringing.

For what it's worth, Johnson has said he's square and friendly with Angelos now. I suspect whatever lures him back out won't be a complicated project like the O's, but I'd love to see him make a run for that second championship.

"Yes, I know it's a puzzling move considering the timing, but honestly, we didn't think we'd be any good and that there would be lots more opportunities to fire Jerry. That being said, he's still doing a shitty job and we just couldn't let Bobby go to Florida, so there you have it. Jerry out, Bobby will be in uniform tonight. I'll take questions now..."

I really don't see it. Is he really going to take a discount (no way they're paying him a premium right?) to manage a team that isn't overly concerned with winning unless it happens to fall in their lap?

It's not like the Marlins don't have money. If they've been running on austerity budgets at times in the past, it's because they haven't had steady cashflow.

Signing Hanley Ramirez to a six-year deal, and preparing to move into a new ballpark in Little Havana may signal that they're ready to act like grownups.

I'll believe it when I see it. The league yelled at them just this spring. It seems likely they've been turning a profit for years. Maybe they will indeed spend going forward, but i'm skeptical.

So, they fire a guy named Gonzalez and might replace him with a guy who's best second language is probably Japanese. I wonder if they would consider Lou Pinella, who may be available any day now.
