nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 catalanotto DFA'd...so says jerry in the post game!
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Three scoops of pleased with two tablespoons of disappointed that it wasn't Matthews, but I guess I knew his centerfieldiness would save him.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2010 Author Posted May 10, 2010 its a hell of an improvement over the 1B corps we started the season with.and yeah, i think GMJ's job is safe at least until Beltran makes it back
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 What the hell do we do once Murphy comes back is what I'd like to know. I guess he takes Carter's spot, though I'd prefer he'd take Tatis' spot.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 We've had a few threads on it, but we don't have to do anything the hell. If the other guys are hitting, Murphy has options. He's going to be down rehabbing for a while anyhow.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 good.I predict he's better than Billy Wagner starting tomorrow.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Great opportunity for the Mets to get number 8 back in circulation.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Why, I haven't celebrated like this since my re-bris!
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Carter, Ike... somebody get Otis Nixon on the phone, stat!
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Better late than never, but better never late.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Finally. It's a start, but more purging needs be done if the Mets wish to improve their bench options. There must be somebody available to be the fill in centerfielder aside from GMJ. He has been terrible this year and shows little signs of improving to the point of respectability.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 "Chances are this is the end of my career," said Catalanotto, a 36-year-old Smithtown, L.I., native. "I'm very happy to have had the opportunity to play for the Mets. I always wanted to play in New York, and it's a great organization and group of guys."So we'll probably be adding another one to the 'Died a Met' list.Would have been nice for the local kid to have hung on and had one last decent season even as the last guy on the roster, but this is a move that needed to be made.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I guess sig lines work...if only we had an answer for the GMJ debacle.

Pardon my French, but fuck sentiment right in its pussy asshole. Frankie Cats has a shorter drive home than most DFA victims, is all this means.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Did he play RF? If he does well, I say we try him out over Frenchy.
Guest attgig Guests Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I'm worried to see how playing everyday in AAA translates into the bench. I would love to see him playing everyday, but I don't think we have a spot for him. for right now, I'm guessing a platoon for frenchy...

He'd have earned a lot more sympathy if he had either a. actually been a local METS fan or b. had kept his big yap shut about his Yankee-fandom.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I'd say he'd be an interesting option to spell Frenchy against tough righties... or Ike against tough lefties,* since his platoon split's minimal. You could also add a few more Carter-usage restrictions on Manuel's forthcoming laminated managing guide/playmat, like using him to spell Frenchy only on Niese/Pelf starts, and doing the same with Davis when the Met flyball brigade starts. That way, the effect of Carter's iffy defense is minimized further.*With the caveat that it's in Ike's long-term best interests to face tough lefties as often as possible, and the understanding that he should do so, barring gigantic playoff-y implications. Yes, I kid myself.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Polishing the defense is a concern for teams that are hitting.

He's got a shorter drive home, is all this means.I have no idea whether he was a Met fan or MFY fan growing up (and don't particularly care) but, either way, count me out as one of those bringing the hate here.He was brought here to fill the 25th man role - one he filled for the last couple of years in other places with decent success [.275/.340-ish and had about 1/3 of his hits for extra bases while pitching in at five different positions over the last two years]. Had he been able to something along those lines this season it would have been a nice way for a local kid picked in the 10th round nearly 2 decades ago to cap off a 14 year career. In the end, he couldn't and so he's gone after a whopping 25 ABs. As I said before, it was a move that needed to be made but I think I'll be able to refrain from labeling the guy an anti-Christ on account of it.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Polishing the defense is a concern for teams that are hitting.Fair enough. But if said concern trumps the offensive benefit that Carter brings... then, hell, why bring him up at all? Francoeur's career numbers vs. righties (2047 PA): .258/.299/.410Also, defense, you said?"If you can find a home for me, I'll gladly shag an above-average number of flies in your centerfield area, kind sirs. Is it warm where you are?"

I'm just saying that the local-boy-made-good thing isn't plucking at my heartstrings a bit for this one. He wasn't doing the job in spring training, and they went with him anyway, in large part (presumably) because of the advantage he had over other 25th man candidates in positional versatility. He's played one game in the field so far this year.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 That would certainly suggest to me he's been ill-served and ill-used by his manager.
