Rusch placed on waivers, Flores likely replacement by Troy Renck on May 14, 2009 DENVER � Glendon Rusch is the first major casualty of the Rockies� disappointing start. According to multiple major league sources, the reliever was placed on waivers after Thursday�s loss to the Houston Astros. He�s expected to be replaced by Triple-A left-hander Randy Flores. Several teammates were upset and disappointed by the move because Rusch is among the most popular players in the clubhouse. Manager Clint Hurdle foreshadowed the transaction Thursday morning when he said that Rusch needed much better results. The reliever was tagged for 12 hits in Wednesday�s loss, raising his ERA to 6.75.

If there's a basebll purgatory (and I'm not saying there is), it might be being 38 and signing a contract with the Grand Prarie AirHogs in order that you may start a game at 10:35 AM after one day with the team.

The beauty of a perfect game is that no one ever sees it coming. When White Sox centerfielder Dewayne Wise showed up at the ballpark and did not find his name in the starting lineup, he didn't even bother to stretch. When backup catcher Ramon Castro showed up and did find his name in the starting lineup, he hurriedly went over signs with Buehrle�fastball, cutter, change. "You know," Buehrle said, "I throw a curveball, too." Castro, a May acquisition from the Mets who was catching Buehrle for the first time, had no idea.

Meanwhile, Wise had left the bench and gone down to the batting cage under the stadium to take a few cuts, unaware of what was developing outside. With one out in the seventh Wise heard over the radio "19 up, 19 down," but he was sure the announcer was mistaken. A frequent late-game defensive replacement, he checked the scoreboard for himself. "I'd better go get loose," he said, hustling to the weight room. When the Rays' Evan Longoria flied out to end the seventh, Cooper turned to manager Ozzie Guillen and said, "Now it's real. Game on." Castro ran to the dugout and told pitcher Jose Contreras, "He hasn't missed a spot all day. I think he's going to do it." Contreras replied, "Shut the f--- up." Castro's legs were starting to shake. Jamie's stomach was starting to churn. But the usually expressive Guillen was not getting emotional. JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers have announced that Wally Backman has been relieved of his duties as field manager of the team effective immediately. Backman will be replaced by former Joliet hitting coach Ira Smith, who will serve as the team�s interim manager for the remainder of the 2009 season.



�The fans in Joliet deserve a winner,� said Backman. �I�m disappointed that we could not get the job done.�



Backman departs with the JackHammers in sixth place in the Northern League with a 24-42 record. Smith comes back to Joliet after serving as Hal Lanier�s hitting coach during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He began his coaching career with the Lincoln Saltdogs in 2004 as their bench coach and moved to the role of hitting coach in 2005 before spending two years with the JackHammers. He began a 14-year playing career when he was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1990 draft. Reaching AAA in the Padres and Tigers organizations, Smith first played in the Northern League in 1999 with Duluth-Superior. He logged five seasons in the Northern League (Sioux City, 2000-2001; Winnipeg, 2002; and Sioux City-Lincoln, 2003) before starting his coaching career in 2004. Smith will join the team on Friday when the JackHammers begin a three-game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Silver Cross Field.



�We want to thank Wally for all that he has done and all the hard work he has put in,� said JackHammers Executive Vice President/General Manager Kelly Sufka. �He has done everything we�ve asked him to do except for in the Win-Loss Column. Nobody is more disappointed with the teams� record than Wally. A change needed to be made for our fans sake and this is the change that we believe needed to happen.�
