Cooper out. Pedrique in.

Al Pedrique, the Astros' Minor League field coordinator, has joined the team to serve as third-base coach the rest of the season. Wade met with the coaching staff Monday and told the coaches their status for 2010 would not be established until after a full-time manager is named.

Royce Ring was the losing pitcher in tonight's AAA Championship game for Memphis against the Durham Bulls. He gave up an extra inning double, then was replaced by a guy who threw two wild pitches to get the winning run home.
I heard the last two innings during my drive home tonight on that 1520AM station that carries the Buffalo AAA games.
I wonder if Susan Sarandon was at the game.

The Chicago White Sox have picked up their 2010 option on right-hander Freddy Garcia, sources confirmed for ESPN on Tuesday.

Watched the end of the Boston/ Anaheim ALDS game last night and remembered how much I liked D. Oliver when he was with the Mets.

Lackey will be a free agent at the end of the season. I wonder if Oliver will be, too.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Pirates have named Ray Searage pitching coach after two seasons in the same position with Triple-A affiliate Indianapolis.

The 54-year-old Searage has been a pitching coach in the Pirates' organization for seven seasons and recently completed his 32nd year in professional baseball.

Searage played seven big league seasons with the New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. He started his coaching career in the St. Louis Cardinals' minor league system in 1994.

Two things I like to see:

[*:3376aadf]Relievers getting pitching coach jobs.[/*:m:3376aadf][/list:u:3376aadf]

Searage is a Freeport homeboy and I wish him luck. He gets no respect, I tell ya. Lunchy Joel didn't even spell his name correctly in "We Didn't Start the Fire."

The strange part of that Searage story is that Pittsburgh ends a drama that's been continuing since the summer, announcing that thier first-base/infield coach Perry Hill won't be returning.

Melvin Mora has his option declined and he's cut loose like a deuce by the Orioles.

Pedro Martinez claims this highlight from his night in the Bronx:

"I remember one guy sitting right in the front row ... with his daughter in one arm and a cup of beer in the other hand and saying all kinds of nasty stuff. I just told him, 'Your daughter is right beside you. It's a little girl. It's a shame you're saying all these things.' I had to stop and tell him because I'm a father myself, and God, how can you be so dumb to do those kind of things in front of your child? What kind of example are you setting?"

Can we please sign Pedro for 2010? As pitching coach, batboy, whatever? We need him back.

Perhaps I'm blinded by the light of recently writing up some of his exploits from back in the day (what a wonderful all-purpose expression of time), but boy I'd love to have Melvin back. To play what? Just to be here. Serve as 1999 Met Emeritus.

He's welcome to audition for the Fernando Tatis Memorial Veteran Reserve Right-Handed Hitter roster slot as far as I'm concerned but I'd hate to be put in a spot where we'd have to rely on him for something big (just like Tatis himself!)

The Mets "need" somebody to fill the three-decade slot* for the 1990's, 2000's, and 2010's, and there are very few candidates.

Mora, in fact, may be the last hope.

* 60's-70's-80's: Tom Seaver and Mike Jorgensen.
70's-80's-90's: Alex Trevino
80's-90's-00's: David Cone

Sadly (or perhaps happily), this occurred to me as well. In every case, it took an encore as opposed to a contiguous flow to forge three-decade club membership.

Anybody want to take a flyer on who might be the '00s/'10s/'20s Met?

Other candidates for 90s-00s-10s:

Benny Agbayani
Edgardo Alfonzo
Armando Benitez
Jay Payton
Glendon Rusch
Jorge Toca?
Vance Wilson

If the Mets had acquired Octavio Dotel before the 00's ended, he would have been a perfect candidate.

As for 00's-10's-20's, there's David Wright and Jose Reyes, if they stick around long enough. Jon Neise or Daniel Murphy are other possibilities.

Mora leaves the Orioles having played more games for them at 3rd base than anyone not named Brooks Robinson.
I wouldn't have guessed that one.

Reid Cornelius-bullpen coach Florida Marlins
Clint Hurdle-hitting coach Texas Rangers

That's four exMets so far, hired this off season for major league coaching duties (Cornelius, Hurdle, Pedrique, Searage)

Aaron Heilman gets around: traded to Arizona for prospects.

The Chicago Cubs traded right-handed relief pitcher Aaron Heilman to the Arizona Diamondbacks for left-handed pitching prospect Scott Maine and first base prospect Ryne White.

Heilman went 4-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 70 appearances for the Cubs last season. He was acquired from Seattle for left-handed pitcher Garrett Olson and infielder Ronny Cedeno on January 28, 2009.

Maine, 24, combined to go 4-5 with seven saves and a 2.90 ERA in 48 relief appearances with Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno in 2009. The sixth-round pick of the 2007 draft reached the Triple-A level in just his third pro season.

White, 23, hit .266 with six home runs for Single-A Visalia last season. He is a Chicago native and St. Rita grad.
