Apparently the heads of baseball in conjunction with the two teams decided back when rain was an issue on Saturday that they're not going to conclude a WS game in less than 9 innings. IOW, even had the game been called 1/2 inning earlier with the Phils leading and the minimum 5 innings in the books they still would have suspended the game rather than declare it official and that this decision would apply to all games and not just clinching games.

Now I'm not sure why they felt the need to keep this mid-stream change a secret. The mgmt for both teams knew so there's nothing underhanded going on but the teams apparently kept this info from their players for whatever reason.

Pesonally I think this is the right move and should be (and should already have been) codified into the books for future post-season games as well. Eitehr way, I'm sure Bud will be accused for favoring one team or the other and will take heat for everything from starting the game in the first place to causing the rain itself.

Right move , winning or losing the WS with the deciding game called for rain would have been awful. I suppose it was better for all concerned that the Rays tied it up.

Not just the deciding game, but all WS games whether they are potential clinchers or not.
Just not sure why they opted to keep all that a secret.

Selig also added that there's no thought of moving the remaining half-game to Tampa. 'We'll stay here as long as it takes even if we have to celebrate Thanksgiving'

Selig sounds like a fool when he says things like that.

When doesn't Selig sound like a fool?

Kind of reminiscent of McCain's "100 years in Iraq" blunder.

Selig should have ruled that Phillies fans must remain in their seats until play resumes.

I'd add some snark about them not knowing enough to come in out of the rain, but I'd kill for a rain-suspended World Series game to deal with at Shea right about now.

BTW, Game Five of the World Series was Shea's theoretical swan song, the absolute last game it could have hosted had the Mets cooperated like crazy. Imagine it getting one extra night's reprieve in similar weather-driven circumstances. Or would Jeff Wilpon be driving his Bobcat up and down the aisles impatiently tearing it down before Selig could say a word?

I was thinking the same thing this morning. What a memorable last game that would have been!

If only...

Picturing Jeffy in his Bobcat chasing Selig around Shea is just making me laugh.

Oh please keep postponing games until the 1st... that's when I'm back, and I've just been drowning in rugby and cricket out here.

Enjoy yourself. Say hi to the hobbits for me.

I'm opening my mind to the idea of neutral site World Series, or, as Scott Boras proposes, just the first two games.

i wouldnt want neutral sites. not having the season run so late into the fall would be nice though.

Say hi to Bret and Jemaine for me :)

It dawns on me that 3 to 3-1/2 innings of baseball to potentially decide the world championship borders on

crazy. Reminiscent of the Pine Tar Game continuation, except that wasn't for all the proverbial marbles.
