I didn't want to start a 14th thread, and I'm kinda baseball'd out, but why
is ESPN showing the Tigers/Sox game instead of the Philly game in the NY
area? Does anyone give a rats ass about this game tonight when a Philly
win tonight would totally suck?

They probably couldn't reschedule everyone in time. Most likely they had a crew all set up for the Tigers/Sox game and couldn't get anything out to Philly.

Meanwhile, the Phillies are slapping Suppan around pretty roughly in the early going of the evening game. The Phillies lead 4-0 after two innings.

The damn Brewers are 3-10 in September. They are stumbling toward the finish line of the season like the Mets did last fall.

And what the Brew Crew did last year, though they started that fall in August!

I don't pay all that much attention to the schedule, but I thought the Phils/
Brewers game was a "second" Sunday night game on ESPN with second
tier announcers but I could be wrong.

FOX and ESPN's little stranglehold on Saturday afternoon and Sunday nights
is a sore spot with me even though I know they pay a lot for their privileges.

ESPN never has a second game on Sunday - it's one game to the entire country.
In fact there rarely ever IS a second Sunday night game (Tex & LA sometimes) because ESPN's exclusive rights to that slot means that a competing game can't even be televised to the local market.
(Mets had a Sunday night game @ Dodgers a couple years back and we were all howling because there was no TV at all)

Tonight there happens to be [u:b106f2ec0b]three[/u:b106f2ec0b] night games but that's just because of last-minute weather-related rescheduling. Not sure if those games got special permission to televise to their home folks or not but ESPN sure isn't at either one.

That is also the reason why the Mets didn't have a double header today as well, because of the conflicts with ESPN television.

Well that's why they couldn't do a [u:0175eb81ee]seperate admission[/u:0175eb81ee] DH today - because they would have lost the right to televise the night game. And they couldn't have a S.A. DH on Saturday because they were the FOX game which is sked in the middle of the day. Ergo, they were stuck losing the gate for the one game by having the old fashioned "Twi-Night" DH.

And speaking of sep-adm DHs, the ChiSox/Tiggers DH today was supposed to be seperate (I think) but Game 1 was rain-delayed some 3 hours and barely finished in time for the ESPN time slot at 8:00 (EDT). Not sure how they handled it but I don't think they had time to clear out the stadium and fill it up again. Sounds like maybe the night ticket holders got screwed or the day guys got a bonus game if they wanted it.

Carlos Zambrano throwing a no-hitter (through 8) at Miller Park for the Cubs v. Astros.

Given that the White Sox are the ESPN game, is this game even being televised *anywhere*?

Struck him out!!

Cubs get their first no-hitter in 36 years during a "road" game in front of a home crowd in a neutral city from a pitcher coming off a 12 day break due to shoulder issues.

And seeing as how we've probably blown our chance to catch the Cubs for NL's best record (unless we sweep them next week) we might as well root for them to kick Houston to the curb as it well be one less team to fight for if this comes down the the WC.
Those two will play again in Milwaukee tomorrow and then have one more hanging around to be played if neccessary at the end of the season.

From the 'I still feel like shit but at least it's not just us' file;
the ChiSox took a 7-0 lead against the Tiggers into the 7th and blew the entire thing before getting the 2nd out in the 8th.

The Twinkies lost earlier today and it looked like gaining a game and a half was in the bag.
Not yet it isn't.

Every single sporting event I cared about went the wrong way for me yesterday.

And now you're telling me that a pitcher named Zambrano threw a no-hitter?

I think I'm gonna' go out and look for a little old lady in a wheelchair who I can Richard Widmark.

Explain, please.

I was under the impression that Cubs losing put the Mets in position to win 3 of 4/sweep the series next week against the Cubs and possibly get best record in the NL.

Astros were creeping to within striking distance for the Wild Card. The loss last night puts them two games back (three back of the Mets).

As it is right now, we have four teams vying for two spots.

Yes. (See more in the Baseball Prospectus thread.)

I think from here on in, or unless things change dramatically, we need to be rooting for the Cubs to win if they're playing the Brewers (as they will be starting tomorrow) or the Astros.

Also we want the Cubs to win so that they may not play so hard when they play us.

Yeah but the Mets might take things for granted then and blow the series.

Oh, and Ted Lilly has a no-hitter through five this afternoon. The Astros haven't gotten a hit since Jose Castillo singled in the eighth inning... Thursday night.

Which was almost four whole days ago.
