I told you that the Mets left all their suck on the field last night.

And the Giants picked it up.

Ouch, quite a dig at Zito by Cohen.

I like this Chulk guy even better than Zito. Easley clears the bases with a double. Apparently Easley likes Chulk too.

It's the best feeling when you're an out-of-town Mets fan coming out to see them as the visiting team, then seeing the Mets open up like this.

The home crowd dissapates and you find yourself surrounded by a city of Met fans you never knew about that had been hiding within your own city.

All of a sudden the Mets score nine, and AT&T park is Agee, Theodore, & Throneberry Park.

Nine-run scoring Mets, I salute you.

Pedro stopped pitching effectively after 100 pitches about five years ago. This is also the first regular season game he's gone more than 3 innings in since September. Can we shut him down please before he hurts himself again.

Edit: And he shuts me up with two straight strikeouts.

Edit2: But why is an oft-injured Pedro the only guy Willie is willing to stretch out. Shouldn't he be the last guy? Especially in his first game back? Or am I just overtired?

He's had 109 pitches, the last 40 in zero-pressure.

Howie and Eddie on the radio were opining that the one thing that Willie leaving him in must prove is that there is no doubt about Pedro's health (arm or hammy), otherwise he probably would have been taken out earlier.

But, I agree, I would have not have pressed my luck up by 6.

109 doesn't seem unusual given the way Willie has been quick with the hook on other starters this year? Or does the huge lead and no pressure mean it doesn't matter?

I think it means it matters less.

Seaver in the house.

It may matter less, but it still makes me nervous. And it still doesn't match the way Willie has pulled the rest of his starting pitchers. I guess I just need more consistency in my life.

GREAT intervietw from Pedro. Thoughtful, long answers. And I'm not just saying that because he took the time at the end to thank everyone who had been rooting for him. And Pedro paused and smiled at the camera after his last sentence. He knows exactly how I like my belly scractched. And he looks thrilled to be back.

Edit: changed "starters" to "starting pitchers"

Well, I'd've liked a few starters pulled the last two innings.

Get Casanova an inning or two.

Sleep well, my friends. Dream not that Scott Schoeneweis just pitched the Giants back into this show.

wow. with a 6 run lead i can't think of anything worse than the sequence "walk, walk, homer" to start off the 9th inning. i'd rather see 3 straight solo shots, at least then he'd be giving them a chance to make outs by putting the ball over the plate

Wagner comes on and gets the double play to end it on the 2nd pitch. its a save because the tying run was on deck.

pretty pathetic that Wagner had to throw at all tonight, not that he's been overworked.

No, I actually thought he should have thrown the ninth anyway, just to get some work in.

Thanks, Bill.

Y'know, Schoeneweis has pitched so well this year, I'm willing to just forget that last inning ever happened.

I too appreciated the Pedro interview, and the looking at the camera to thank his supporters was a classy touch.

That's just a crying shame. Why is that? I can't imagine that an out of town diehard does not have Extra Innings. Was the game not on for some reason?

I fell asleep amid the 8-run inning so didn't see the rest of the game but wasn't it a save because it was 9-6 (3 run diff) when Wags came in?

I think the current rules is that a three-run difference qualifies it as a save only if he pitches at least an inning. So it took the tying run on deck to qualify it.

Yes, that's right.

Three ways to get a save:

  • Pitch the final three innings
  • Pitch the final full inning with a three-run lead or less
  • Come into the game with the tying run on base, at the plate, or on deck

Ah. Didn't realize that a full innning had to be pitched. Thanks.

As an old family friend used to say - 'Don't a day go by when you don't learn sumthin' 'bout sumthin'.

Are we sure that full inning thing is correct?

Yep. There was a guy a week or two ago (don't remember the team) who had a save credited, then taken away the next day. He came in with one out in the ninth and a three-run lead and should not have gotten a save.
