Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Apparently that's what cutting Delgado would mean.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 See, what happens is that you replace Delgado on the roster with another player. They let you do that when you cut a guy.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2008 Author Posted May 27, 2008 Do you have any players in mind?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 I'm guessing it's Mike Carp.I agree that cutting Delgado is unwise at best, foolish at worst.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Hell, just ride Tatis until he remembers that he's too old to keep this up also.Or Carp.Or Michel Abreu.Or anyone, really, considering Luis Fucking Castillo has a higher OPS than Delgado.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2008 Author Posted May 27, 2008 Out of the players you named, my money would be on Delgado to have the best production for the rest of the year.Tatis is fun right now, but I don't trust him long term. If you're talking about a temporary benching I might agree and see what Tatis can do. But now we need Tatis in the outfield.Cutting Delgado wouldn't work.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Who cares what his OPS is relative to Castillo the first two months. It's his OPS relative to his backups going forward that matters.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 I just don't see what makes anyone think Delgado's going to get better as the season goes on.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2008 Author Posted May 27, 2008 I agree. I see him playing the same and outproducing any potential replacements.I don't see why anyone thinks cutting him without replacing his production would benefit the team.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Cutting Delgado would be the utmost in stupidity.
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Willets Point wrote:Cutting Delgado would be the utmost in stupidity.No. The utmost in stupidity is cutting him and expecting Mike Carp to pick up the slack.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 (edited) Well, let's be careful with superlatives. Cutting Wright would be the utmost in stupidity.Small aside: I remember the Giants had a halfback named Billy Taylor who had a few good starts that made me hopeful in 1979, fell into part-time status in 1980, and mostly disuse in 1981.The Giants released him in the middle of that year, and I remember telling my Dad, "Did you hear? The Giants released Taylor."His response, "They released Lawrence Taylor?!" blew my mind, because somewhere in his head, it was conceiveable that his beloved sad-sack franchise, still only a few short seasons removed from The Fumble, could be foolish enough to cut the greatest rookie outside linebacker anybody could recall. That would have been the utmost in stupidity. Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 I don't particularly agree with cutting Delgado either, but are we so absolutely convinced that nowhere in baseball is there an available first baseman who can hit over .220?
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 And I'd say not protecting Tom Seaver in an expansion draft would be the utmost in stupidity. But no team would do that, would they?

EVEN if all he's good for is a long ball in 20abs. By all means platoon him, by all means make him a sunday starter, but eating the money would be stupid. We're not so drastically short of roster space that acquiring one is worth $12 million. Lets not forget, we're currently carrying THREE catchers, an IF/OF from AA who's gone O for 10 after getting his 3 doubles aswell as rotating various under performing (hey that's you Matt Wise, Jorge Sosa and Carlos Muniz) rarely utilised relievers through the 12 pitcher slot.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 When we're certain he's either a clearly worse threat off the bench than Raul Casanova and has little chance of changing that, or that he's damaging the prospects of other players, that's when we reach that point. The only other release trigger would be if he's begging for his release and explitily implicitly threatening to be a distraction if he doesn't get it. We're not there yet either. For all the accusations coming in, the guy has been nothing but a gent since he arrived.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 He also has three home runs in the past week. Yes his average still sucks, but he's been swinging the bat at least a little better lately.

His name is Carlos Delgado and he will return to form. Maybe for the Mets if rash decisions aren't made.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Willie seemed to suggest in today's snooze that Delgado might sit again today... or else I read the thing wrong.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Bondy in the Snooze claims that "Willie has decided to platoon Carlos Delgado, finally".

I would prefer that they give Val Pascucci the chance over Easley or Evans.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Yeah, I pine for Val. Righthanded and slugging a ton in New Orleans.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 I think they need another outfielder before they let Evans go
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Well, if they DL Church (and it sure looks like they should), Val plays some outfield.Other outfielders that are performing in AAA include Chris Aguila (nine homers), Brady Clark (.304 BA) and Jesus Feliciano (.366 OBP with no power).
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Didn't I read that Brady was out for the remainder of the season with an injury?
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Of course. Knee injury. That bumps Feliciano up the depth chart.

His father is Filipino, and his mother is Samoan, Tongan, and Fijian. As of 2006, Aguila and Tony Solaita are the only known ethnic Samoans who have played in Major League Baseball. * Aguila has been doing Polynesian fire knife dancing since he was in the fifth grade.
