1b-Delgado probably washed up
2b Castillo gimpy and signed to long term deal
ss Reyes showing signs of coming out of long funk-finally
3b Wright-batting 200 against right handers-still early I know
lf Alou-hitting machine/another possible injury
cf Beltran looks awful this year at the plate
rf Church a revelation but 2 concussions in a few month span spell trouble
c Schneider is he the defensive wiz he was supposed to be-does work well with pitchers
p Santana good will get better as history proves
p Maine good
p Pelfrey couple of good starts but mostly bad
p Perez decent but still scary
p Vargas 1 good 1 bad
Bench Easley,Anderson,Chavez all not hitting no pop off of the bench
Castro just coming back
Relief corps Wagner good, Smith good, Sho decent, Sanchez decent the rest bad ARE THE METS REALLY AS GOOD AS WE HOPED??? Just a topic to discuss

Seems like the topic we're discussing all over this forum.

I'll just go on record to state that Carlos Delgado is not washed up and I expect him to return to being a power threat this season (albeit probably not to the level of his best seasons).

I don't think Delgado's "washed up" either. His best days are definitely behind him, but he will probably give us about 20 or so homers and hit about .240 to .250.

Not at all what we're paying him for, but not bad for a number 7 hitter.

I wouldn't characterize Feliciano as being bad (last night notwithstanding). I'd put him in the "decent" camp.

The Braves are on a home tear, which makes me suspicious that there is some sneaky activity going on, since they can't do squat on the road.

Nevertheless, these three games have been so depressing after the high of the weekend.

And someone needs to remind the Marlins that they're the Marlins.

1b) Delgado - if you think a .280-.300/35-40hr hitter, well into another season of .250/20hr productiivity at the age of 36, whose OPS+ last season was 103 and is even worse right now, isn't "washed up", then we have different definitions of that cliche.
2b) Castillo - not just gimpy, but pop-less and old, and signed to long term deal. Ugh.
SS) Reyes - other than a tremendous early season last year, basically a .275 hitter, with flashes of power, who strikes out too much and gets on not enough for a leadoff hitter. Has also shown a growing tendency toward showboating and lacksadaisical play.
3b) Wright- the golden boy is not carrying the team this year. But he shouldn't have to.
LF) Alou- the hitting machine has broken down yet again. He's 42, folks. This isn't going to get better.
CF) Beltran - for a "superstar", he's awfully streaky. Right now he just looks lost.
RF) Church - great so far, and effective against LHP, but 2 concussions in a few months could indicate his reckless, all-out style will render him injury-prone.
C) Schneider i - like his Washingtonian fellow expatriate, he's hit well so far, but has had injuries, and is now cooling off. His defense is as advertised, but he's 31+ and isn't getting any younger. Who is our catcher of the future?

Bench: Easley,Anderson,Chavez, Castro - all not hitting; no pop off of the bench

P1) Santana - as advertised.
P2) Maine - very good
P3) Perez - wildly inconsistent
P4) Pelfrey - wildly inconsistent
P5a) Vargas - a castoff holding the seat till Pedro comes back.
P5b) Pedro - at his age and physical condition, you simply cannot count on him

Bullpen:
(CL) Wagner - unhittable this year, but 36+ and has a big mouth
- Smith, Shoenweise - good in limited roles
- Sanchez, Feliciano - inconsistent
- Heilman, Sosa - awful
- Wise - old and injured

Delgado: he'll improve, but I don't really see him winding up better than mediocre.

Castillo: Banged up, and totally not worth 4 years, but he always hits at least 30 points higher than this. I'd expect some improvement.

Reyes: There's actually nothing at all wrong with 18 BBs and 25 Ks in 177 ABs. His OPS is up a bit from last year, too. I think too many people still expect every month for Reyes to be like April 2007. If he can get his average up to .290, he's still a huge asset, and I don't see why that can't happen.

Wright: He's walking more (perhaps being pitched around?), but otherwise the extra base hits are there, and the K rate is the same. I see no reason to think his average won't climb.

Alou: a half-season might be optimistic

Beltran: his walks are way up, but the power is nonexistent right now. Not sure what's up with that. Hopefully he'll get uncorked soon.

Church: probably not THIS good, but if he can stay away from more injuries he'll still have a solid year.

Schneider: a .705 OPS is actually good for him, but I don't know if he can sustain even that. Still, that play on Damon was great.

bench: went from solid to sucky in two short months. At least they have the track record to suggest a turnaround is possible.

Santana: walks are up, strikeouts are down, 11 home runs in 60 innings is ugly as sin... yes he's our best pitcher, but we paid for more than this

Maine: Not averaging six innings a start. Otherwise OK.

Perez: will the real Ollie Perez EVER stand up?

Pelfrey: I'm losing patience with him.

We need Pedro. And we need a healthy El Duque. I think the pitching will again collapse late without both of them.

Wagner: great.

Smith: very good.

Sanchez: Has looked very good and very bad at times.

Feliciano: too many damn baserunners.

Schoeneweis: fine within limits

Heilman and Sosa: we needed them to bear the workhorse innings for the rest of the pen. Oh crap.
