Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 As per Metsblog.com...The Mets have signed free-agent RHP Matt Wise to a one-year contract.Wise, 32, was 3-2 with one save and a 4.19 ERA in a career-high 56 games last year for the Brewers. Mets GM Omar Minaya, on WiseMatt has had success in a variety of roles. He adds a versatile arm to the bullpen.Since 2005, Wise has posted a 3.27 ERA against the NL East.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 he's not bad and at least they didn't throw 3 years at him for no reason.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Great move! He's a more-than-decent pitcher.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Seems like a wise move.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 So it's Mota for Wise in a middle relief challenge trade.
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Waiting for our resident Wisconsinite, TransMonk, to offer his perspective but on paper it looks good. (Mebbe TM is snowed in?)
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Wise was a fan favorite in Milwaukee and puts up dependable numbers. An improvement over Mota in my opinion.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 It's for $1.2 million. If we release him before opening day, we owe him $750,000.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Let's hope we get Pre-All Star Break Wise (2.87 ERA) instead of Post-All Star Break Wise (7.31 ERA).
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I was kind of hoping we'd pick up somebody who's at least as good as Heilman to really solidify the pen. Wise isn't inspiring, but having him and hopefully Sanchez in place of Mota and Sele might actually be worth a few games in the standings.
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 GUess Wise was expendable after the Brewers added David Riske-- a guy I'd really have liked Omar to land.

Wise is good, for a limited amount of innings. I'm not sure Heilman can give us more than the 86 IP he gave us this year. There are limits to Sosa's durability, too. In his first month in the pen, he pitched 20 innings and had a 2.70 ERA. That was wonderful, but the price he paid for that was a 6.50 ERA in September. Plus he's currently our best option for sixth starter. So assuming we'll need a lot of innings out of the pen, where do we get them from?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I can't find out on a quick scan if he adds to the Jewish subculture on the Mets. I did find out that he may be the only Major Leaguer to miss time after a salad tong-related injury.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I'd like to put in a personal Matt Wise memory ... except I don't have one.His ERA and WHiP was up a bit last year, but it has still been better than lg avg for 4 of his last 5 seasons. That bad 2007 2nd half that CF points out occured following his beaning of a batter (I forget who) which is something that almost automatically gets cited as a cause-and-effect thing whether it's actually true or not.

I thought the Brewers got a good price on him. Gagne and Mota, on the other hand...
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel 8 days ago:Wise has worn No. 38 for the Brewers, but that uniform was given to Eric Gagne at Monday's press conference and no mention was made of Wise having surrendered it. We think this would be quite a mistake for the Brewers. Wise is easily a better bet than Guillermo Mota for 2008 and probably Salomon Torres, as well. He did struggle down the stretch on his way to a 4.19 ERA last season, but much of that was attributed to some mental issues after he threw a pitch that broke Pedro Lopez's cheekbone. He'll be a smart pickup if the Brewers let him go.

Guest AG/DC Guests Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 This is good spring journalism:WISE DECISION: When Delgado entered the clubhouse, reliever Matt Wise reminded him of their first meeting, back on Aug.15, 2000, when Wise was a rookie with the Angels and Delgado was a Blue Jay. Angels manager Mike Scioscia told Wise to throw Delgado four straight fastballs inside. Delgado squared to bunt and Wise unintentionally drilled him in the groin - the first hit batter of Wise's career. The two didn't cross paths again until they bumped into each other two months later at a Newport Beach, Calif., restaurant, when Delgado was visiting Shawn Green. A scared Wise hopped in his car and drove off.
