Mets ink Matt Wise to one year deal

The Mets have signed free-agent RHP Matt Wise to a one-year contract.

Wise, 32, was 3-2 with one save and a 4.19 ERA in a career-high 56 games last year for the Brewers.

Wise was a fan favorite in Milwaukee and puts up dependable numbers.

An improvement over Mota in my opinion.

I was kind of hoping we'd pick up somebody who's at least as good as Heilman to really solidify the pen. Wise isn't inspiring, but having him and hopefully Sanchez in place of Mota and Sele might actually be worth a few games in the standings.

That's a fair concern, especially given the uncertain state of the rotation. Wise is good, for a limited amount of innings. I'm not sure Heilman can give us more than the 86 IP he gave us this year. There are limits to Sosa's durability, too. In his first month in the pen, he pitched 20 innings and had a 2.70 ERA. That was wonderful, but the price he paid for that was a 6.50 ERA in September. Plus he's currently our best option for sixth starter. So assuming we'll need a lot of innings out of the pen, where do we get them from?

I can't find out on a quick scan if he adds to the Jewish subculture on the Mets. I did find out that he may be the only Major Leaguer to miss time after a salad tong-related injury.

I'd like to put in a personal Matt Wise memory ... except I don't have one.

His ERA and WHiP was up a bit last year, but it has still been better than lg avg for 4 of his last 5 seasons.

That bad 2007 2nd half that CF points out occured following his beaning of a batter (I forget who) which is something that almost automatically gets cited as a cause-and-effect thing whether it's actually true or not.

Wise isn't on the Jewish Major Leaguer's Roster.

After Linebrink got four years, I'd have expected Riske (a better pitcher, I think) to get the same. I thought the Brewers got a good price on him. Gagne and Mota, on the other hand...

Wise has worn No. 38 for the Brewers, but that uniform was given to Eric Gagne at Monday's press conference and no mention was made of Wise having surrendered it. We think this would be quite a mistake for the Brewers. Wise is easily a better bet than Guillermo Mota for 2008 and probably Salomon Torres, as well. He did struggle down the stretch on his way to a 4.19 ERA last season, but much of that was attributed to some mental issues after he threw a pitch that broke Pedro Lopez's cheekbone. He'll be a smart pickup if the Brewers let him go.
