Howie was rolling off a few of these numbers yesterday. These are batting averages with runners in scoring position and 2 outs:

Beltran .189
Delgado .173
Wright .213
Alou .100
Reyes .205
LoDuca .182

And that's Wright when he's red hot.

He's walking tremendously though. Beltran and others aren't making them pay.

It's fusterating to see Wright and Beltran both with good eyes and the Mets' patience not paying off. Then you see Alou with a freaking .100 and go "Ah."

A twenty-game hitting streak and a .100 batting average with runners in scoring position and two outs. That's amazin'.

It's almost incomprehensible that these numbers can be this low across the board. Usually I write off numbers like this is just coincidence, but this makes you wonder if something is going on here.

I also wonder what the league average is. Maybe it's harder to hit with two out and runners in scoring position because the batter will see more breaking balls, especially if first base is open. Maybe averages are lower because the likelihood is higher that the batter will be facing a fresh lefty (or righty) specialist in that situation.

On the other hand, maybe we're just really bad with two outs and runners in scoring position.

The league average is .248. The Mets, as a team, come in at .228, 25th out of 30 teams. The six guys I mention are considerably worse than that.

Have the Mets had more at bats with RISP and 2 out than most other teams?

They've been scoring enough runs to win a lot of games. Maybe they're getting more opportunities than most and, although they're not coming through at a good rate, the quantity has still been enough to win games for them.

the mets had 615.

the average nl team scored 227 runs in these situations.

the mets scored 197

the average nl team had a batting average of 0.244

the mets averaged 0.222

the average nl team had an obp of 0.354

the mets on-based at 0.352

i had actually expected this to be far uglier than it appears to be...

philly's the best team in the nl in this regard.

But a no-out sac fly. In fact, I'm pretty sure they're impossible with two out.

i guess a RISP 2 outs deep fly ball that the outfielder drops wouldn't be scored a sacrifice fly and an error, would it?

Error yes, Sac Fly no, RBI no, At Bat yes.

The reason the SF exists is to acknowledge that there is some degree of intent when an outfield fly is hit w/a runner on 3rd and less than 2 out.
Remove the intent incentive and you also remove the "credit" for hitting it there.
