Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Howie was rolling off a few of these numbers yesterday. These are batting averages with runners in scoring position and 2 outs:Beltran .189Delgado .173Wright .213Alou .100Reyes .205LoDuca .182
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Well there's room for improvement at least, what's the league average anyway?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 And that's Wright when he's red hot. He's walking tremendously though. Beltran and others aren't making them pay. It's fusterating to see Wright and Beltran both with good eyes and the Mets' patience not paying off. Then you see Alou with a freaking .100 and go "Ah."A twenty-game hitting streak and a .100 batting average with runners in scoring position and two outs. That's amazin'.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2007 Author Posted September 17, 2007 It's almost incomprehensible that these numbers can be this low across the board. Usually I write off numbers like this is just coincidence, but this makes you wonder if something is going on here. Are they pressing?
Guest Mendoza Line Guests Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 I also wonder what the league average is. Maybe it's harder to hit with two out and runners in scoring position because the batter will see more breaking balls, especially if first base is open. Maybe averages are lower because the likelihood is higher that the batter will be facing a fresh lefty (or righty) specialist in that situation. On the other hand, maybe we're just really bad with two outs and runners in scoring position.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2007 Author Posted September 17, 2007 The league average is .248. The Mets, as a team, come in at .228, 25th out of 30 teams. The six guys I mention are considerably worse than that.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Have the Mets had more at bats with RISP and 2 out than most other teams? They've been scoring enough runs to win a lot of games. Maybe they're getting more opportunities than most and, although they're not coming through at a good rate, the quantity has still been enough to win games for them.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Oh, wait. I thought this was just the opposite of Elster's thread.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 batting averages? thats a relief. i thought this was going to be a thread about a girl i took home.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 HA!^This is distressing.Cant win games with those numbers.

HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 ^^^Not a big deal, but Castillo also had a sac fly in the first. I guess it warrants mentioning.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 metsmarathon thanks for those numbers, can't get much clearer than that.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 HahnSolo wrote:^^^Not a big deal, but Castillo also had a sac fly in the first. I guess it warrants mentioning. But a no-out sac fly. In fact, I'm pretty sure they're impossible with two out.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 i guess a RISP 2 outs deep fly ball that the outfielder drops wouldn't be scored a sacrifice fly and an error, would it?

HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 I guess I'm just amazed when a Met scores from 3rd at any time that I forgot the point of this thread. My contribution, like the name of this thread, is ugly.
