stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 10 wins shy means this thread will be slipping off to the third, fourth and fifith page by the time Glavine passes 19th Century hurler Bobby Matthews and makes himself the 23rd winningest pitcher in the game's history. The top 22, that would be your 300 Win Club:Cy Young 511Unbreakable record right there. The Original Big Train, Walter Johnson 417Pete Alexander 373The first New York City mega sports star, Christy Mathewson 373The winningest lefty, Warren Spahn 363 Kid Nichols 361Pud Galvin 360Technically the active leader, Roger Clemens 348Tim Keefe 342Glavine's golf buddy Greg Maddux 333Steve Carlton 329John Clarkson 328Eddie Plank 326Nolan Ryan 324Don Sutton 324"Knucksie" Phil Niekro 318Gaylord Perry 314, shown wearing his uni that he breaks out for Old Timers Games The Franchise, Tom Seaver 311"Old Hoss" Charles Radbourne 309Mickey Welch 307Pair of Gatekeepers at the Milestone MarkerLefty Grove 300andEarly WynnAll except for Maddux and Clemens are in the Hall of Fame, and unless the voters decide to go the McGwire route when Clemens is up for inshrinment, those two will join the other 20 in Cooperstown.
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Interesting tidbit on Pud Galvin, who apparently injected monkey testosterone in a n effort to gain a competitive advantage:http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5314753
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 Bobby Mathews 297Tom Glavine 2937 more wins to 300Interesting tidbit, Glavine has 2,492 Ks in his career. I doubt he'll get too close at the end of the year, but I wonder if being one of the select few with both 300 wins and 3,000 strikeouts would entice him to stick around a few more seasons.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 6, 2007 Author Posted May 6, 2007 Well, Clemens resumes his "active leader" role today!Glavine still siting on 293Inneresting trivia, Glavine would join Spahn, Seaver and Ryan as the only guys with games played as a Met. Pretty nifty foursomeWhich team has had the most 300 game winners suit up for them?
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 6, 2007 Author Posted May 6, 2007 BTW, another interesting tidbit I dug out is that the 10 seasons as Brave teammates from 93-02 for Glavine and Maddux will break a record for most years as teammates for a pair of future or current 300 Game Winners (there have never been more than two future or current 300 Game Winners on the same team in a given year) the current record is 5:New York Giants Tim Keefe/Mickey Welch 1885-1889 andNext pair, clocking in at 4 yearsNew York Mets Tom Seaver/Nolan Ryan 1968-1971Another interesting tidbit is that in 1986 Tom Seaver missed out on being a teammate of 2 300 Game Winners in the same season. He was traded in June to the Red Sox, becoming a teammate of Roger Clemens, and in August of that year the White Sox picked up Steve Carlton!Carlton wound up making history a year later, joining Phil Niekro on the Indians, making it the first time a club would feature two current 300 Game Winners at the same time during the same season.Seaver, Niekro and John Clarkson share the title of being on the same team as another future or current 300 Game Winner in the same year, all three doing it three times:John ClarksonCharles Radbourne Braves 1888-1889Kid Nichols Braves 1890-1892Cy Young Spiders 1892-1894Tom SeaverNolan Ryan Mets 1968-1971Steve Carlton White Sox 1986Roger Clemens Red Sox 1988Phil NiekroWarren Spahn Braves 1964Gaylord Perry Braves 1980Steve Carlton Indians 1987Also another note about Keefe and Welch, the two also were teammates on the 1880-1882 Troy team of the NL. They are the only combo to be on more than one franchise.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2007 Author Posted May 7, 2007 BTW, inneresting thing, Warren Sphan's last year on the Braves was Phil Niekro's first and thanks to the 1987 Braves wanting to give Knuksie "One Last Go Round" the last day of the regular season, Phil Niekro ended up being a teammate of Tom Glavine in Glavine's debut season!BTW, in 1988 Score in their set had a card of Niekro from that gameWhich means one of the following Brave hurlers who made their MLB debuts in 2002 will one day win 300 games! =Kevin GryboskiTrey Hodges (although he has since been released by the Twins and twice by the Braves, and hasn't pitched in the bigs since 03)Jung Bong (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Reds)John Foster (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 05)John Ennis (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Tigers)Andy Pratt (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Cubs)Joey Dawley (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Indians)Seriously, what is with all those Baby Braves that haven't pitched since 2004? Heh, maybe Mazzone really is overrated as a developmental pitching coach as oppossed to a push-button one (ANYONE could be a PC to Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux.)
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2007 Author Posted May 9, 2007 294The Big Six as Glavine needs 6 more
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Being the good sport that he is Tom got his hair buzzed after the game.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2007 Author Posted May 19, 2007 BTW the answer to the trivia question for the most future and/or current 300 game winners on a team's All Time Roster is the Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves with 8Tom Glavine is bidding to join:Charles Radbourne 1886-1889John Clarkson 1888-1892Kid Nichols 1890-1901Cy Young 1911Warren Spahn 1942, 1946-1964Phil Niekro 1964-1983, 1987Gaylord Perry 1981Greg Maddux 1993-2003The Giants (Both in NY and SF) have 6, Cardinals and Indians with 5The Mets are hoping to join the Phillies and Red Sox with 4, and are currently tied with the Athletics, Yankees, Senators/Twins, Astros and Reds, White Sox and Cubs
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Steve, if you jinx this by bumping this thread too early...
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2007 Author Posted May 19, 2007 Notice I didn't add the fact that Glavine is now 5 more wins shy of 300And two more from Bobby Mathews
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2007 Author Posted May 19, 2007 Speaking of Mathews, interesting thing about HOF pitchers is that for the most part, the only 19th century hurlers in the HOF are those with 300 or more winsSmall exceptions of course for those whose careers started pretty late in the 19th Century like Rube Waddell (1897), Vic Willis (1898), Jack Chesbro, and Joe McGinnity, (both 1899) but the only 19th Century hurler to make it to the HOF and not win 300 is Amos Rusie who played from 1889 to 1901. He won 245 games in his career, but is probably best known for being traded from the Giants to the Reds for Christy Mathewson
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2007 Author Posted June 10, 2007 Looks like we have an excellent chance of preventing win # 350 (7th all-time) for Ass-Head Friday nightThat would be nice.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2007 Author Posted June 10, 2007 Okay, time to start placing bets, which comes first, 300 Wins for Glavine, or 3,000 Ks for Pedro.Figure if Pedro's first start is in August, that would mean what, 6 more starts? The way things are going I'm starting to think Glavine is going to be at 298 when Pedro comes back!
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Glavine will get 200 losses before he gets 300 wins (if he gets 300 wins).
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2007 Author Posted June 10, 2007 Mets are trying their darndest to avoid 195 right now
Guest cleonjones11 Guests Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Watch Glavine and Bonds flub it in 2007 season..Too funny but fitting in a year most pro athletes are being exposed for the cheating scumbags they are in most if not all sports....Baseball feels like its in a sinkhole....
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2007 Author Posted July 10, 2007 296, done, 297, done. One more and Tommy Boy is officially the 23rd winningest pitcher of all-time.But that means he isOr perhaps more appropriatly with Tommy being a Brave and allaway from 300
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2007 Author Posted July 14, 2007 #298 is in the books, justmore wins to go
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 I'd hope # 300 is a gem like tonights.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 If it's going to happen at home, Glavine needs to get wins in his next two starts (at LA, vs. PIT). After that, his next two starts will be on the road in Milwaukee and Chicago.Of course, he could also delay it a while more...but let's hope not.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 It would be nice for him to do it like Seaver did, with a complete game.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Seaver had the DH thingie working on his side. Glavine might've at least come out for the bottom of the ninth last night if he hadn't had to bat in the top half.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2007 Author Posted July 25, 2007 Knocking on the doorNext up, in Milwaukee, and then HOPEFULLY Chicago, when I shall be in the ballpark on 8/3.Though seeing 301, breaking a tie with Early Wynn and Lefty Grove would be nice as well =

The dude's responsible for 27 Braves' wins against the Mets, so I don't really feel the need to celebrate all his wins. Maybe when he wins 300 in a Mets uniform.

I mean, he is a hall-of-famer and all that. Primarily, though, I was hoping he'd do it at home then because it would mean he was pitching well and/or the team winning.
Zach Thornton Syracuse Mets - AAA LHP On Sunday, the southpaw tossed five shutout innings as the bulk pitcher. He gave up 2 hits, walked 2 and had 5 strikeouts. Explore Zach Thornton News >
