Lessee...

Pregame intros included players not on the roster (DiFelice and Ring) as well as El Duque, Pedro (arm in a sling, but huge ovation) and Duaner (also a really nice ovation).

Anthem was Aaron Neville, and he kinda sucked. Darryl threw out the first pitch to a huge (but not as loud as I'd expected) hand.

Pregame moment of silence for both Lidle and Buck O'Neill.

Best sign of the game: "Cardinals...Tastes Just Like Chicken."

Trump was shown on the "Kiss Cam" and was booed heavily. Celebs spotted in the seats added near the on-deck circle: Tim Robbins (keeping score! -- had some of his kids but Susan wasn't there), also Matt Dillon.

For the "Meet the Mets singalong" they had nice clips of Howie and Ed, Gary C., and the Mets (post-NLDS celenbration) all singing.

Mota was indeed warming in the 7th and I guess Willie figured him for the 1 inning only, so may as well use him if he was already warm. If god forbid the Cardinals had tied, they could use Aaron for the 9th/10th or something like that.

When Mota was pitching to Wilson they got Bradford up in a HURRY. He woulda faced Pujols with the 2 men on if it had been necessary.

The crowd was cheering hard for a LONG time after the HR (was prolonged by a beach ball going onto the field from the bleachers) but no curtain call for Beltran.

Rain seemed ominous but was barely a drizzle. Was a bit chilly though with the wind, bundle up for tomorrow night if you're headed out to the park.

Beltran's homer hit, I think, between the 8 and 9 on the inning-by-inning linescore on the scoreboard. Highest indeed I think anyone's gotten since the Vaughn shot in '02.

Let's go Mets!

Beltran did give a belated and modest little wave from the dugout. The FOX camera barely caught it.

I like having the extended post-game stuff on SNY.

Watching the highlights on Sportscenter, I didn't realize how high up the score-
board Carlos' two-run bomb landed ... that was a freakin' shot.

Good. He can't resist basking in reflected glory. I'm certain had the MFYs season not be over (ha!) his fat ass and bad toupee would be at Yankee Stadium instead.

What's the deal though with Ron Howard? If he's a Met-Lovin' Big Shot, it's news to me. I don't recall his having ties to NY or the Mets, other than his Happy Days softball game. He's spent the last 20 years beneath a baseball cap but I don't recall a Met logo on any of them.

I'd be way cooler if Fonzie was in attendance.

I like Matt Dillon quite a bit and glad he's been spotted around. I think he and I should hang out.

Pujols on Glavine:

"He wasn't good. He wasn't good at all," Pujols said of Glavine, who threw seven innings of four-hit ball for the victory. "I think we hit the ball hard, we didn't get some breaks.

"I say he wasn't good at all. We just didn't get some opportunities and that's it. . . . (Glavine did the) same thing that he always does. Throw a changeup, fastball and that was it. I just think we should've done a better job than we did."

Before I condfemn Al for sour grapes I just want to say that as impressive as Glavine's numbers were last night I was surprised that he had as much success as he did. It seemed like he was behind on every hitter, got lucky with 3-4 line drives hit at people, Pujols' base-running blunder and the double plays really helped him out.

That being said, results is results and Pujols saying 'He wasn't good at all' is a bit much.

My wife made out with him in a bar once.

Before she was my wife of course.

Or even knew me.

I'm pretty sure she didn't know me then...

How about instead of whining you don't get picked off first on a terrible play, Mr. "People-don't-realize-how-good-of-a-baserunner-he-is" Pujols.

During his inning in the booth during NLDS Game 1, Tim Robbins said that Opie was a Dodger fan.

But there he was at Shea last night watching the Mets and the Cards.

Bandwagon?

Or was Mr. Robbins wrong?

That was my line from the KTE thread and was the first thing I thought of as he was getting doubled up.
Note to self: 'Don't look too smart do ya now genius!'

Ron Howard is a Dodger fan. He was on that "stadium tour" with Hanks and a few others this summer and one of them let that slip during an in-game interview.

In the elimination battle of ex-Mets for an SNY wannabe spot (if indeed that's what it is) Todd Zeile > Tim Tuefel

Nice game by Glavine.
But we all know that if Derek Jeter were a Mets pitcher, he would have thrown a no-hitter last night.

Zeile's gotta take it easy on the gel though.

I agree with everyone's points on Pujols, but it did seem like every time they hit the ball hard last night it was right at someone. I didn't feel comfortable until that pop-up landed in Valentin's glove.

Speaking of Zeile... did anyone ever see that Todd Zeile "Mullet" character movie? What ever happened to that?

We could claim that the scouting is good and the defense well-positioned instead of crediting the outs to luck.

I was about to start a new thread about this. I never liked the guy.Hes the prototype of the arrogant modern athlete. He took Maine deep twice. Maine should bust him up and in a few times to keep him loose up there.

I guess the next start will be a chance for Glavine to dispell rumors of luck.

But come on, it takes more than 3-4 line drives. This is the NLCS.

And guess what, our defense did their jobs.

Albert not impressed with Glavine...

]

Pujols left hitless and unimpressed with Glavine
BY BOB HERZOG
Newsday Staff Writer

October 13, 2006

With an expression of scorn and words of disdain, Albert Pujols was defiant in defeat last night.

The Cardinals' slugger, who went 0-for-3 with a walk, flipped his chair into the leg of a reporter gathered at his locker, turned his back, dressed slowly and then faced the media with obvious reluctance.

Asked about the effectiveness of Mets starter Tom Glavine, Pujols, who lined out twice, said, "He wasn't good. I thought we hit the ball hard but we didn't get any breaks."

Pujols struck out on a changeup against Glavine in the first, walked in the fourth, lined out hard to short in the seventh and lined out to first off Billy Wagner leading off the ninth.

Asked what happened in the fourth inning when, after his walk, he misread Juan Encarnacion's fly ball to center and was doubled off first on Carlos Beltran's one-hop throw to Carlos Delgado, Pujols snapped, "Double play."

Asked what he was thinking about on that play, he said, "I didn't think anything."

Asked if he was frustrated, Pujols answered with an incredulous look. "Why get frustrated?" he said. "I can't make a mistake? I'm perfect?"

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said of Pujols' baserunning blunder, "Let me tell you, Albert is an outstanding baserunner and I'm not exaggerating. An outstanding baserunner. Part of it is aggressiveness and, almost always, he mixes in good sense. That was the exception. When he first read it, he read blooper, but the ball hung up in the wind and basically, [it was] a mistake; a rare one for him."

Glavine avoided mistakes against Pujols and said afterwards of his game plan, "I executed the first part real well, which is facing him with nobody on base. He's a great hitter -- to say he's a great hitter is an understatement. He's the best hitter in baseball right now and he's the guy you don't want to beat you."

Opie is Billy Wagner's favorite TV character. I wonder if it took advantage of the opportunity to meet Opie.
