Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 That's so weird. I thought that it was just some weird fluke in metirish's link and not a real story which is why I made a tasteless joke. Not funny though no matter who lives or dies.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 watching this now--absolutely ubelieveable.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 I didnt see what you deleted WP, but a joke certainly occured to me.Concerning the Skanks and the headlines,....but..... this is just---devistaing news in this area.Lidle was very well known being an ex- Phillie and all.I still may have posted the joke in due time---but must...refrain...*Z clenches teeth.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 This is just unreal. And it shouldnt be any more unreal than if it was just some ordinary Joe.But----its not the same when you can put a face on the tragedy.A familiar face.........
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Worse than that, Channel 7 actually mentioned the disappointing end to the MFY's season in relation to this story. Stoopid!
Guest sharpie Guests Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 We mustn't forget that he was also a former Met.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Cory LidleMarch 22, 1972 - October 11, 2006
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 the first thing i thought of was "George has the headlines for another day."

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 This is no less tragic, but yeah, it is more unreal. To post news of a small aircraft crashing on a Mets site, wonder if it's appropriate, go off to my evening job, come home and find out that it's an ex-Met whose plane crashed... un-real.Rest in peace, Mr. Lidle.A lot of peeps heading out to the game early may not find out until they get to the park. Hopefully the Mets acknowledge it with a moment of silence.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 And no game. That 7-2, 3.53 record is a pretty good Metly mark to leave.Nabbed by the Diamondbacks in the expansion draft.

stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 I believe the second Met to die in a transportation accident. Danny Frisella via a dune buggy accident is the other
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Certainly there are others. Nino Espinosa on Christmas Eve 1987.Almost-Met Brian Cole.

stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 1973's Bob L. Miller car crash
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 There you go.Amazing that the Phils had expressed concern with his flying.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Lidle running away with UMDB hits today.Still a long way behind Jeff Reardon on 12/27/2005. But the night is young.
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Another almost is Bobby Ojeda.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 John Franco on ESPN now about it.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 The UMDB comes up sixth on a Yahoo search of "cory lidle" (no quotes).

For a time he wore the lowest number ever by a Met pitcher, 11, which was defeated by Funky Shingo a year ago.He was a non-union replacement player, probably accounting for at least some of the cold shoulders he encountered. Interesting what if anything Franco had to say, considering he was a union reliever and not at peace with scabs who might take the food off his table.Following the 97 season, he was in Pheonix with his wife and his agent, who was meeting with player association people on his behalf (fall league bball was also going on at the time). It was also the day of the Diamondbacks expansion draft and so with nothing to do the Lidles joined the crowd at a PHX hotel to watch who got chosen. He was surprised when his name came up 7th overall -- but not as surprised as the D-Backs to learn he was on hand. They gave him a hat and an impromptu press conference and everything.Lidle had said he was surprised by the pick since the Mets had informed him he was on their list of 15 protected guys, though it turned out they'd held (IIRC) McMichael and Rigo Beltran instread (I;'m actually not sure of either of those 2. I know it was 2 relievers, one a vet).I'm sad to hear about his loss but before he dies a hero or anything I hope they find out what happened. Among the things Arthur Rhodes said about him was that he had a gambling issue. He didn't speak well of the Phils when he was sprung from there and his comments about Torre were obviously looked at as fresh meat by M & MD. Maddog this evening appeared to be truly shaken up and regretful, as if the possibility it was a suicide, as remote as that might be, had entered his mind and wouldn't leave.
