Guillermo Mota is scheduled (though who knows, delays happen) to be the 796th Met (and 25th newcomer in 2006, wow). Who will be number 800?

Barry Zito.

(sorry, couldn't resist)

That wont make Cleon happy.
He wants Zito to be the 798th.

It depends.
Does this mean wearing a Met uni or appearing in a game?

When the rosters are expanded, and assuming Omar doesn't find another player or two before Sept 1, I expect several players to be called up.
So, the "800th" player will depend on how the names are listed - alphabetically? By position? Alphabetically by position?

Anyhow, here are some thoughts:
Any player who appears on a major leagur roster is ineligible to play in the AFL, so that eliminates Humber. I still think Carlos Gomez will go to the AFL, too.

So, the first timers I expected to be called up are:

INF: Gotay

P: Oliver Perez
Steve Schmoll
Mitch Wylie

My pick is Schmoll.

They go in order of appearance in a game, I believe, and if the game's at home (meaning everyone's in the field at the same time), it goes in AB order. My vote is Schmoll, I guess. I think we'll see Perez sooner than September.

No, it's just that there's a PtBNL heading out of town, and your adoptees have proved to be particularly vulnerable at trading hour.

When I was trying to figure out the 700th Met, which could have been any of several new players debuting in 2003's first game of the year, Yancy suggested players should go in the order they were announced (batting order), and it made sense. That made Cliff Floyd 698, Rey Sanchez 699 and Tom Glavine 700.

I still need to double-check this but:

100: Jimmie Schaffer (July 26, 1965)
200: Bill Sudakis (July 11, 1972)
300: Phil Mankowski (April 11, 1980)
400: Randy Milligan (Sept. 12, 1987)
500: Kelly Stinnett (April 5, 1994)
600: Lenny Harris (July 4, 1998)
700: Tom Glavine (March 31, 2003)

I actually have no prospects in my fold right now. I keep meaning to look into adopting a new one.

Y'all who voted for Perez (I think that means Zvon and nobody else), please stop by for a parting gift.

Regarding Met Number 700: When Hidecki Matsui went down in the first inning of a Yankee game, it was pointed out that his games-played streak was ended as soon as he left the game, because you don't get credit for appearing in the game until (I think) you get an at-bat, a defensive chance or pitch like three pitches (or record an out pitching). I'm not sure what the actual rule was, but it was clearly put in place to stop would-be Gehrigs from extending a streak by hiding in the field for a half inning.

Anypants, maybe the order in which a player's appearance should be recorded should be the order in which they reach this threshold (whatever it was)

Phil Humber is 799. Unless something very unexpected happens, that's our last debut for 2006. See you in this thread next year, Zito guessers.

There was an article in the Daily News about a week ago that said that neither the Mets nor the Yankees will "have any interest" in Zito when he becomes a free agent at the end of this year.
Take that for what its worth.
Maybe they're trying to drive the price down, but with Boras as his agent. methinks it won't work.

His performance has been declining the past two years. But a good post season will drive that price back up.
