I think he is, Milledge seems to be the same type of a 2nd tier OF star thats a dime a dozen, an interchangable part that you can get, sometimes at a cheap price on either trade or free agent market. Zito is a stud, going back to his first pitching coach will help

We don't need Zito to get into the playoffs (if we collapse badly enough to fall out of them then we have bigger problems than just the ones he'll solve). We only "need" him to help us thru them.
But the problem there is that he may only get one start; or only a couple. And maybe those starts aren't any good (happens all the time), or maybe they are but everyone else suxx, or he's good but it's not good enough, yyybbb. (See; Johnson, Randy / Houston 1999)
We'd be dealing a big-time minor league chip (stop with this "Milledge is dime-a-dozen" stuff) for a few starts.
That's not enough.



And while we're on the subject: this sign-before-the-trade thing isn't going to happen for several reasons:

- the A's would have to allow it - and actually they have to get permission from Sea-leg's office to do it. Then, if they did it for the Mets they'd have to do it for everyone which slows down other potential trades if this one falls through, etc.
- Zito/Boras have to agree to negotiate with one team just 2 months before this 28 y/o lefty will be allowed to negotiate with all 30 ... and Boras ALWAYS takes his guys to FA-gency. Zito switched agents to Boras specifically for his potential move.
- allowing it would drive the price up and probably no longer be for just Milledge (assuming that's a standing offer to start with) as the reason the price is so "low" to begin with is BECAUSE it's only a 2-month rental.
- Can anyone tell me when the last time they've heard of this happening? ... I can't either.
The only recent ones were where [u:19ac860678]the player[/u:19ac860678] controlled the agenda thru a no-trade deal (Schilling to Boston, Johnson to NYY). This contingency has happened in the past but it's very rare and I don't see it happening here.

Hm. I think Zito's a good pitcher but his undeserved Cy Young has created an equally undeserved reputation--not to mention a high asking price (I think Rubin's full of shit. All the other reporters seem to think that the deal would be Zito & Heilman. Still, for the purposes of the poll, I'm answering as though it were straight up).

Anyway, Zito's having a nice year, but his peripherals continue to trend downward. Two of his main selling points are that he's young and durable--neither of which matter for shit in a 2-month rental. Now, if I had a guarantee that we could sign him to, say, a 4-year deal for $10M a year, I'd pull the trigger in a heartbeat, but if we're even able to get a deal done, it's far more likely to be a 6 or 7 year deal for $12M+, and that price, plus Milledge . . . It's a lot.

I think we're better off hanging on to Milledge. He's only 21 years old and is putting up a line of .278 AVG/.397 OBP/.459 SLG, 12 SB in AAA this year. That's pretty fucking good, especially the progress he's made on his plate discipline. And after watching the dude play, it's hard to believe that some serious power won't come. He might end up being "only" a competent outfielder, but a competent outfielder who costs a couple hundred thousand is a pretty valuable asset.

I realize that Zito could really help us in the post season this year, but I want more than one championship. I want a whole lot of championships in short succession, and I think the way to do that is to hold on to our promising youngsters and use our financial edge to snap up other team's promising youngsters once they hit free agency.

I voted no in the other poll where there is no contract extension in place for Zito.

In this poll, I voted yes under the assumption that a 3 year contract extension was in place for the deal to go through. Without the extension, it's not worth doing, but with him locked up for a few years we should have a solid lefty starter to help anchor the rotation for several more years.
