You didn't have a picture/ spot for Victor Mendez?

Yeah, you've got me on Mendez. I have him down here on my desktop version, but he's been thus far camera shy.

There we go:

He's from Las Matas de Farfan, one of those small Domican towns that exports far more than their share of Major Leaguers, including Juan Encarnacion. I can't figure out what this cool name means. The Spanish had a light infantry brigade called the farfanes. So does it translate to "The Fights of the Light Horseman"?

Standridge had a tenure of a little over two months, having been claimed from the Reds off of waivers on November 20. He'll not make it into the Ultimate Mets Database (at least, not this time), but he did get to suit up as a Met in minicamp.

As another free agent moves on to greener uniforms, if not pastures, the persistence of Steve Trachsel's freedom becomes more puzzling.

Maybe those reports of Randolph losing faith in Trachsel's mettle have resounded upon the thinking of other teams.

You don't say?

I'd've thought Padilla made the best candidate.

I think the Mets are optomistic that Padilla repeats some of that 2005 success. I am. Wouldn't be shocked to see him crack the opening day roster.

One wonders if Dave Williams' spot on that 40-man is safe, as well. If they've already got Park, Sosa, Vargas, Soler -- in addition to Humber and Pelfrey -- exactly how many "backup" options do you need on the roster... ?

I think they're prohibited from removing injured guys from the roster. What they could have done is placed him on the 60-Day DL, however.

Baseball rules say that players on the 60 day DL had to be placed on the 40 man roster prior to the Rule V draft.

Also- did anyone see this? No info on whether this guy has to be added to the 40 man roster:

]
Mets claimed RHP Marcos Carvajal off waivers from the Devil Rays.

2/15/07 3:00 PM Carvajal is a bigger loss for the Rays than either of the two prospects the team actually traded for Jae-Kuk Ryu. The 22-year-old had a 3.86 ERA and a 69/39 K/BB ratio in 72 1/3 IP for Double-A Montgomery last season and a 2.19 ERA in 37 innings in Venezuela over the winter. While he hasn't made as much progress as hoped since spending 2005 in the majors with the Rockies as a Rule 5 pick, he still could be a fine short reliever in time. The Mets will have him begin the year in Double- or Triple-A.

Was Williams not on the 40-man roster?

Posted

Williams was/is on the 40 man roster. His "injury" was after last year's Rule V draft. So he could be placed on it now to protect a 40 man roster spot. But if his rehab takes longer then expected, he would have to be placed back on the 40 man roster prior to next year's draft.

Interesting note. I believe that a player cannot be released directly from the DL. So, if a player's injury is so severe that they cannot play any more, the team must recall the player to the 40 man roster. And if the roster is full, they would theoretically have to cut another player to make room for the injured one before they could cut him.

Nice pickup of Carvajal. I'm surprised no one else grabbed him. He had a crazy 3.78/7.29 home/away ERA split in Colorado two years ago. I think we'll be hearing from this guy sometime this season.

Stinnett for Alomar isn't such a bad trade. If he makes the team ever, I guess it could be the first time the Mets ever had a "Jr." and/or a "Sr." stitched on the back of a uniform.

I'm going to back off the Vargas prediction. He's got an option year left and he's coming off a 7+ ERA year. That spot is more likely to go to a pitcher without options.

Today's Daily News reports that Carvajal is late to camp because of visa problems.

EDIT: time for our first "why doesn't he use Master Card?" joke of the year.
