Signed for Two Years $5 Million, Added to 40, 12/7
Relief Pitchers

Mota

I guess I'll leave Burgos off the projected roster for now as there's nobody currently in the bullpen with options. (Indeed, only two guys on the roster have them.) It's certainly possible that Padilla could clear waivers and open in the minors, though, or even get a re-hab assignment.

Oliver

With Oliver going, that's the last of 2006's bullpen figures. All available have re-signed or moved on.

Signed to Minor League Contracts and Invited to Spring Training, 12/20
Starting PitchersRelief PitchersOutfielders

Collazo

Nageotte

Urdaneta

Vasquez

Ambres
Among the spring training invites is Lino Urdaneta, the Mexican League Refugee that the Mets first grabbed in 2005, who they won't give up on but can't keep healthy.

The "Vasquez" is Jorge Vasquez, who saw some time with Kansas City in 2004 and Atlanta in 2005, and spent last season toiling in AA for Ptitsburgh.

Willie Collazo did fine as an old AA starter for Binghamton last season, but it didn't translate so well at Norfolk, where he put up a 4.79 ERA in 41 innings.

Clint Nageotte has been struggling to establish himself in Seattle for three years. He seeks to become the Mets first Clint since Hurdle.

Chip Ambres is a former speed prospect with decent power and strong plate discipline who has been stung by the injury bug the last few years. It's to be seen if his leg injuries have hurt his speed. His arm is considered to be poor.

I guess this was pretty much a done deal the moment the Mets signed Easley, but this breaks up the Blue Jay Mafia wa had going. That alone makes me sad.

Signed, 1/5Demoted from Projected Roster
Outfielders

Newhan

Johnson
I guess the option thing place Newhan ahead of Johnson and Milledge right now, but I'm not too confident that that's the scenario. I'd feel better if he was still playing some second, but he's not.

The Mets are looking at a lot of waiver transactions this season.

why are you listing williams as a starter?

It's just a projection.

Given that Williams was re-signed and Pelfrey, Soler and Humber all have options, it seems most likely -- as of today -- that Williams will start the year as the number 5 starter.

Williams and Perez closed the season in the rotation.

Pelfrey and/or Humber may well take that from them beforet he season starts. But each may get a little more seasoning.

Duaner, by the way, got himself an $850,000 contract with a $100,000 incentive clause.

Newhan has a terrifying smile.

You think so? I guess we know why Trachs doesn't smile much.

Stretch this out. Crash Davis earns a return after a successful year working with Mike Pelfrey and and an unsuccessful one in the bigs.

Even with the addition of Schoenweiss, I'm still not sure that Adkins will replace Williams on the 25 man squad. Yes, Adkins has better stuff, and has 2 years under his belt. But to Willie Randolph, it seems that youngsters are as unloved as the top newspaper in the pile at the newsstand. He seems to prefer veterans.

I either had forgotten or had never known that Delgado had offseason surgery.

You could say that about most managers in most sports, seems to me that Willie played some youngsters last season,I could be wrong but the Omar/Willie Mets don't seem as old as the Phillips/Valentine Mets were.

Humber might make the team as a releiver/spot starter. I think Pelfrey only cracks the roster as a full-time starter, though.

Posted

i don't think they carry Humber, either, unless he wins the 5th SP slot. I would think they'd want both those guys to pitch every 5th day.

Posted

I think I read that Sosa signed a contract that guarantees him a spot on the 25 man roster. Can anyone confirm that?

Later

Posted

Well, no contract is going to guarantee someone's spot on the roster --- what you may have heard is that he has a deal which allows him to refuse assignment to the minors if he doesn't make the 25 out of ST or if they try to send him down later on.
IOW, he' may have pledged marriage to the Mets for better but not for worse.

Some news about an invitee:

]William Collazo pitched 4 perfect innings, allowed his first run in the 6th, after 21.2 scoreless innings, and helped the Gigantes de Carolina win 10-2 over the Lobos de Arecibo in the PR Winter League championship best of 9 series.

It's so amazing how they change hats so fast. Adkins, meanwhile, has been a Met for six weeks and still wears a Padre hat. 'Sup wit' dat?
