metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Well I hate this stuff, FU Hoffman....

You saw the 2001 WS and 2004 ALCS, right?Yea-and the catcher could have thrown it into left-but its just unfundimental baseball. If he gets thrown out there he's the anti-MVP.Id like to say Beltran was sure he had it made, but Ive seen him do this before and Ive seen him thrown out.I just dont think the chance is worth the gain in that situation.2 out in the ninth, and all star calebre bat at the plate.Lees batting .290 with 73 RBI.Hes got 99 hits!Hell, its all water under the bridge now-- Im feelin pissed too. This game was ours and the MVP award was ours.*Z waves his fist at Hoffman*
Guest Iubitul Guests Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Look at it this way - 1/3 of the Mets line up took on the AL by themselves, and almost won the game...

Din't it look like he had a better shot at that?It seemed a poor effort there, but I also question why the "no doubles" defense is always used in that situation. If I have two outs (and especially if I have the home field and a chance to win a tie game in the ninth) my first concern is to get the out and win the game, so I would focus on setting up my defense to maximize the chance of getting an out, rather than preventing a guy from getting to second. Disclaimer - i concede that it is possible that Konerko is a dead pull hitter and playing close to the line may in fact have been the regular defensive alignment. Either way, I am not blaming Garner, just wondering what others think is the best general strategy in that situation.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Question: What's the difference between Trevor Hoffman and Braden Looper?Answer: About 20 MPH.But let's look at the bright side. Yes, the AL will have the home field advantage in the World Series. But the Mets are a very good road team.Later
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 No Met games till Friday, now that sucks donkey balls.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Selig is now talking about a rule barring All-Star pitchers from pitching for their teams right before the game, sounds crazy to me.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Selig's a shortsighted moron. He slapped a band-aid on the All-Star game "tie problem" after 2002, and now he's stuck slapping a bigger band-aid over that one. Just let them play the fricking game. Or move it to November, so you don't have to worry about that stuff.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 So how about Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence going to a guy dead for 33 years? Wasn't this a nebulous award in recent years seemingly set up to honor perennial All Stars at the end of their run?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 I see, untouchable.Meanwhile, in the AAA All-Star Game, once and future Met Royce Ring threw a shutout inning as the International League blanked the Pacific Coast League, 6-0.Other former Mets in All-Star action for the Internationals included Jason Tyner (0-1 representing the Rochester Red Wings) and Jorge Velandia (1-2 with a run scored, representing the Charlotte Knights). The PCL was cool, and made only five substitutions.
Zach Thornton Syracuse Mets - AAA LHP On Sunday, the southpaw tossed five shutout innings as the bulk pitcher. He gave up 2 hits, walked 2 and had 5 strikeouts. Explore Zach Thornton News >
