Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 28 Posted May 28 Only four Mets have homered off of Craig Kimbrel in MLB regular season play. Name those four Mets. One answer per post. No consecuposting.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I couldn’t give the year with certainty but I definitely recall a David Wright 9th inning homer in Atlanta/blown save for Kimbrel. Maybe 2012?
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted May 28 Posted May 28 As posted in the Memories thread I recall the Davis one. I think it was when he was really struggling but before the Valley Fever diagnosis and I wanted to believe it was the swing that turned his/our season around. It wasn't. Anyway Duan remembers too.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 28 Author Posted May 28 No Alonso homer. No Ike Davis homer. Correct: David Wright (Gwreck)— May 3, 2013, 9th inning, game tying) https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ATL/ATL201305030.shtml Incorrect: Pete Alonso Ike Davis

I'll be honest I was just trying to remember who hit some home runs for us when he was on the Braves. Can't say it was anything other then that!
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted May 28 Posted May 28 Does anyone remember the Ike Davis home run I'm talking about? I wanna say it was early in the season, I wanna say it was Atlanta. It was a tough left-handed reliever. Was it Johnny Venters?
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I wish we had an easy way to search ancient IGTs. Poked through Ike's BR page for a bit, though. He homered a bunch against the Braves, but none of them were particularly dramatic except maybe this one from 2013 against Luis Ayala? https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN201308200.shtml

Ike's Valley Fever journey is one of the more bizarre incidents in Mets history. Davis was a contemporary and something of a rival asset with Paul Goldschmidt his first year or two. Now he's a trivia question (literally, in this thread), long consigned to civilian life, who even made a switch to pitching in his failed quest to remain on stage, while Goldschmidt is in his 16th season playing first base for the Yankees. He just got sick and was never good again, from an exotic illness unheard of in baseball circles, as radio commenters continually spewed ignorant hot-takes about "Ike and his Jungle Fever." Ike Davis should be starring in a Ben Stiller-directed dark comedy called Go to Hell, Paul Goldschmidt. The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I'm going to go with Juan Soto since he seems to hit HRs against virtually everyone at some point and time.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 28 Author Posted May 28 Not Soto. Not as a Met, anyhow. In fairness, Juan Soto hasn't faced Craig Kimbrel as a Met, as Kimbrel only threw 12 innings in the bigs last year, 11 in the American League with Houston. And of course, Soto and Kimbrel were teammates this year. (But holy crap! Kimbrel has already thrown one inning for Tampa Bay!)
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 28 Author Posted May 28 So yeah, we have Lucas Duda and David Wright who homered off of Craig Kimbrel ClassickTM back in his indomitable Brave days. Our other two victimized subsequent versions of Journeyman Kimbrel.
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted May 28 Posted May 28 I will take a guess that possibly Vientos got a hold of a fastball when Kimbrel was with the Phillies.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted May 28 Posted May 28 Wilmer Flores hit a lot of late-inning homers

Brandon Nimmo wasn't quite established in the Kimbrel GLORY years in Atlanta, and didn't cross his path much after CK became a journeyman, and so far homerless vs. Dirty Craig. 2 hours ago, The Hot Corner said: I will take a guess that possibly Vientos got a hold of a fastball when Kimbrel was with the Phillies. Mark Vientos indeed caught up with Kimmy in 2024 while the great man had been reduced to working as a setup man for Jose Alvarado. That shot put the Mets up by one, in a game that ended as a one-run Met victory. A pretty big shot when you consider that the 2024 Mets ended up clinching on the last day of the season. Fortunately for you Curtis and for you, that one hit was a homerun! Un-fortunately for you, that homerun came in 2018 as a member of the Blue Jays. As a Met, Curtis went 0-for-4 (with two walks, tho'!) against Kimbrel. 1 hour ago, Johnny Lunchbucket said: Jay Bruuuuuce Jay Bruce went 0-for-6 (with two walks, tho'!) against Kimbrel lifetime, but merely 0-for-1 as a Met. Bruce did not let that upset him, because he absolutely owned Lance Lynn (!!), going .349 / .392 / .674 // 1.067 against him in 51 plate appearances. Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Maybe Lindor got him once as a Met? I forget exactly which years Kimbrel was in the AL versus the NL once he left Atlanta.
Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Asdrubal Cabrera is almost forgotten now, but he showed some good Metly power during the Kimbrel Era.
