Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 4 Posted April 4 Going for imaging today. Sounds serious. The talk didn’t sound very encouraging last night. Nothing about “just a precaution”. Both Mendy and Alvarez talking about others stepping up while he’s out. MFS62 and metirish 2
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted April 4 Posted April 4 Hoping is only a mild (Grade 1) strain. The fact that he remained in the game as a baserunner after it occurred is a sign it likely wasn't a more severe strain (such as Senga suffered in 2024).. Still, a Grade 1 strain will likely cost him 2-3 weeks for recovery. Crossing my fingers and holding my breath.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 4 Posted April 4 I tend to cross my breath and hold my fingers, which maybe doesn't help as much, but it's a good conversation starter.

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 4 Author Posted April 4 Minor calf strain. Day to day. No IL decision yet. The Hot Corner 1
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Probbly as good as the Mets could have hoped for. Now as long as they don't rush things and make the situation worse.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Officially to the IL with an expected time missed of 2-to-3 weeks. Ronny Mauricio to be called up. https://nypost.com/2026/04/06/sports/juan-soto-to-miss-at-least-two-weeks-in-mets-injury-calamity/
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Mauricio is an odd choice since he’s not going to play over Bichette or Lindor, he’s probably not going to play over Semien, he doesn’t play first base, and DH is pretty clogged right now with Vientos too hot to sit and Polanco maybe not able to play the field much. Mauricio last played left field in 2023 (26 games in Syracuse). The Hot Corner 1
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Unless there's some risk of losing Melendez because you'd have to send him through waivers when Soto gets back, I'm a little confused by this also.

For a (hopefully) short term coverage issue, that's probably the reason ... or at least A reason. We've also got a few IF/OF hybrids right now to the point where this doesn't have to be a strict position replacement.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Melendez may well be out of options, But he’s also not exactly a great hitter and is exactly the sort of guy who is likely to clear waivers if he gets sent down. The oddity with calling up Mauricio is that the very point of keeping him at AAA was to get him regular playing time, and he doesn’t have any path to regular playing time on the major league roster, even with Soto injured. The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted April 7 Posted April 7 I am only an expert as it pertains to eyes and ocular health, but I have a decent background knowledge of anatomy and general medicine. As I age, I find it takes longer to recall information that was once instantaneous. I feel like I am forgetting past knowledge faster than I am learning new things. Dementia is prominent on the maternal side of my family tree. 🤕

Baseball teams need eye dudes. I used to know John Olichney, who was an attending physician with the Mets. He was the first guy on hand when Mookie took that ball to the face that shattered his sunglasses into his eye. I think John's specialty was neurology, but what was needed at the moment was an eye guy. Be the Mets eye guy!!
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted April 7 Posted April 7 If the Mets call I would consider it. 😄 I won't hold my breath.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 8 Posted April 8 I remember a time, I think it was in 1999 as the Mets were chasing the Wild Card, that Mike Piazza went on the DL. Fortunately, Todd Pratt did a good job filling in and the Mets did pretty well. Every game that the Mets won without Piazza meant that it was a game where they didn't miss Piazza. I'm getting that feeling again as they've won four straight without Soto. If Soto ends up missing fifteen games, there are now at least four of them where it didn't matter. (And hopefully that number will continue to grow!)
