Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20 Posted February 20 We're gearing up locally here for another season of AAA Mets baseball and I am your man on the scene ! As was the case last summer my son will return to work there, in the gift shop for sure but also angling for a position in the media booth (which aligns with his college major and because I have a buddy who works up there and is lobbying on his behalf). This means more comped tix for my family and I so we're all in on this. This week's big story is that the team nickname, originally set to change from the Syracuse Mets to some new moniker for the start of the 2027 season, will actually not happen for another full season due to a copyright problem. They essentially picked a nickname someone else had already come up with. Mets gonna Met I suppose. This quote from the linked article above, though, is what gives me the most pause: [Current Syracuse Mets GM Jason] Smorol said the franchise will work with Brandiose, a branding company that has been involved with a variety of unique names in minor league baseball, including the Rocket City Trash Pandas, El Paso Chihuahuas and the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Which means they're queueing up something cartoonishly stupid, you just watch.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted February 20 Posted February 20 Yeah. I don't love it. It's at the point now that "crazy" names are so common it's not crazy anymore. I'd be more shocked to find a team went with "Eagles" or "Comets" or something more mundane.I have no issue with the Syracuse Mets being their own thing. They were the Syracuse Chiefs for years. I'm guessing they'll steer clear of anything Native American. Salt Potatoes was the obvious choice. With a mascot named Spud. I'm open minded about a different name, but I hope that it's something that ties in with CNY, and not just a crazy name that's selected for the sake of being crazy.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted February 20 Posted February 20 I could live with the Syracuse Salt Potatoes.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted February 20 Posted February 20 I could live with the Syracuse Salt Potatoes. If you do, they'll ask you to contribute around the house. Do the dishes and vacuum, stuff like that.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted February 20 Posted February 20 I think the John Oliver bit from last season likely will convince some to go with crazy names John Oliver talks Minor League Baseball team rename/rebrand on Last Week Tonight | MiLB.com https://share.google/o2HKKEHZiVilJ9HTyIt was a fun bit though
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 20 Posted February 20 Brandiose is pretty vile. Think for yourself, baseball organizations.Among other unsettling and outright creepy things, most of the minor-league logos now seem to have been drawn by the same hand.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 29 Author Posted March 29 Syracuse Mets have split their opening weekend series against the Woo-Sox. Home opener is Tuesday - this first week, the Tues/Thurs/Fri games are all 4:05 PM starts instead of the usual later 6:35 PM starts that will kick in later in April. Forecast looks pretty spotty - I am unlikely to attend any games on this initial homestand. Fboy is back at the ballpark this summer, once again working in the gift shop, which means I'll have lots of comp tickets at my disposal. So that's pretty sweet
